I am going to ring my vets tomorrow and try and get him in there, for a second opinion, I feel he needs a different antibiotic - whether he can have that as well as the 2 week one, I dont know.

My previous vet had left Dragan with an infected tooth for 12 months!  My new vet said it needed to come out.  However due to the length of time it was infected my vet wanted to ensure that the infection had not spread into the bone hence four weeks of antibiotics.  Maybe similar for Rolo do you think?

Rolo loves Da Bird too, I think I need replacement feathers though!! I think his gums must still be inflamed, althoguh he is eating much better than he did before, he even ate the skin off the turkey. I need to see what the vet says next week, and then I can look into doing his write up for the rehoming page, although I might still get a second opinion.

Oooh they are naughty aren't they?  Dragan is stalking the kitchen cos he knows there is turkey in the fridge.  Stalked the cooker whilst it was cooking and looks in disgust at normal cat food.  He got a Da Bird for Xmas, wonderful toy.  However he has to try and remember (as do I ) that he is 17 and a half years old and has bad legs!  Overdid it playing yesterday and poor little fella was limping last night.  Glad to report he is ok again today and we have paced his playtimes though he does tend to sit by the table looking up to see if he can spot Da Bird.  Brilliant invention.

Hope Rolo's breath clears up.  Maybe his gums are infected?  Honestly though the two week antibiotic jab did work with Dragan after his badly infected tooth)

Cheers for that, he still has smelly breath, and has only picked at his food today, but I suspect it is due to getting turkey last night, he prob thinks he should get more!! He is grounded today as he was fighting with one of the neighbours cats yesterday!!

Yeah i think its more for respiratory probs than mouth infections. Antirobe always upsets Simons tummy, he can shoot through the eye of a needle  :(

I Would have thought tablets would be better, I know when people have posted the things this new AB is licenced for, it is only a couple of things, and dentals not being one of them. Rolo is a very handleable cat, and was fine with the other AB's (except they gave him a dodgy tummy).
Ah right - I am going to have to do some research on this, the fact he has had a dental a week ago and still has smelly breath means it hasn't fully worked.

Certainly no where near as good as a course of antirobe. Better than nothing for an untreatable feral i guess but i would prefer to give oral treatment  :shy:

Dr Addie says that steroids are not good for the condition but they do help take the initial swelling down  :-: :shify:

Hi Desley

After Dragan had his dental, he was given two two week antibiotic jabs as his mouth had been so infected the vet wanted to ensure it cleared up.

I do hope so MM, it is more the cost to the new owner that will make him hard to home, although we may be able to help the new owner with the cost of that, as if he was still with us we would have to pay. I dont know enough about it to know whether it is worth giving him jabs, or just take them all out - he still has very smelly breath despite the dental, so something not quite right. The other thing I didn't like is they have given him the 2 week antibiotic jab, and I didn't think it was that effective in things like this?

Thanks Sue.
MM, I would struggle to afford any major vets bills at the moment, and I am wary of taking on too many permanent cats in case it affects space and time for fostering - I wouldnt be able to forgive myself if I couldnt take in a cat that desperately needed a place cos I wanted to keep perfectly adoptable cats for myself. And I have another long term foster here, how could I choose which one to keep? My mum's answer was to keep both, but she isn't the one that has to pay for them, and I like to do yearly blood tests on mine, think they were £80 this year, and then there are vacc's and microchips on top of that, plus insurance - and I couldnt get Rolo insured for his mouth.

I wouldnt keep just cos of being toothless either, they are still rather homeable.

I am the same Sue, and I wish everyone was like that, but sadly they aren't, and it is just one of those things, you can't let it get to you, it diverts you from what is important, and that is caring for the cat - especially as we aren't homing again till the 5th Jan. He could prove me wrong and ring back in the New Year.

I just couldn't not ring and say either "can we hang fire for now" or "we've been to see  another cat we'd like to home" - anything really rather than just be so - casual - about it.  That's it - I think it's the casualness of it, when animals are concerned.  Although having said that, it's not very fair of me - many people come to care for animals when they're not really animal lovers in the first place, really 'cos they've only never had an opportunity, then when they do come to realise how engaging and rewarding it can be, their opinions change, so I suppose that first remark wasn't very charitable of me at all.  I'll shut up now...  :-[

Thanks Sue. Bloke still hasn't rang, so i doubt he is going to now - and the daft part is, even if Rolo had been too old for them, we might have something in that is suitable between now and New YEar, unless he has contacted another rescue. IT would have been courteous, but this kind of thing is something you just get used to when you take phone calls for a rescue. I should learn to take their number and ring them back really.

Hope he doesn't need another op Desley.  Got me fingers crossed.

Shame that guy never rang.  Can't understand that kind of attitude myself.  Even if he'd changed his mind, would've been courteous to let you know.

If we take him back in the new Year and the vet says the steroids haven't worked and we need to remove all the teeth, I shall be taking him to my own vet for a second opinion first, I dont think the rescue will object. I have had toothless cats before, so I know he will be fine in that respect, I just dont fancy putting him through another op if we dont have to with his age.

If its his gums that's inflamed surely taking his teeth out isn't going to make much difference???

:evillaugh: :evillaugh: hee hee this again, do a search for stomatitis  ;D
Some cats suffer with a immune system problem that treats the teeth as a foreign object so they try the normal way of expelling things which results in inflammation and secondry infection.

True MM   - But Desley hasn't mentioned anything about that yet and it is not unheard of for vets to just take teeth out for inflamed gums.  Even our vet has commented on not understanding why vets do it!! :)

I have no idea, just what the vet told me!! He is ultra loving since coming home, dont think he liked being at the vets!! He still has smelly breath though, bless him. We shall know more in 2 weeks when he has to go back, and I shall mention things then - I do have Ovarid in the house.

Hope that Rolo is doing much better following his op.

If its his gums that's inflamed surely taking his teeth out isn't going to make much difference???

Our vet has put a couple of our cats on Ovarid (sp) for their gum problems that wouldn't respond to steroid or antibiotics well and it seems to work a treat at a tablet every 4/5 days.  Those affected are all eating well and doing much better.

Perhaps worth a mention??

Good luck wee Rolo... hope you feel much better real soon. x

Well, he has had his dental, his bloods were fine, but his gums were very inflamed, vets have had to give him a steroid jab, and we have to go back in 2 weeks to see how they are. They have said he will be able to be rehomed, but he could need either regular steroid jabs or all his teeth removed, so might be an expensive cat to adopt - along with the fact he can only eat one kind of wet food and one kind of dry!! And he is 10 and while fine with my girls (well, he wasn't with Tiger), he has had issues with the neighbours male cats. Fingers crossed this bloke is willing to take him on regardless!!
