Thanks Rosella, I was worried I had upset people and I certainly didn't intend to? :)

Thanks for that reply Ela. Nice to know that all rescues do not automatically say no to someone who has sadly lost a cat to an RTA.

Oh yes I will ring them but it was more the fact that their cat had only just got run over and they wanted one to replace it and the message left sounded like they'd just broken something and were going out to get a new one if you know what I mean. It could just be the way they phrased the message but it didn't sound like they were very upset at losing their cat. I'll judge better when I speak to them of course.

I think ?50 is very cheap for an emergency call out.

If someone phones us to say they want a cat as their cat has been run over I do speak to them, sometimes they can live in the safest location and it was sadly just one of those things. Sometimes people phone and ask for an indoor cat as they have lost a little one to a RTA, again I would consider homing. after of course our indoor specialist homechecker has been out and we are satisfied that the cat will really be indoor.

I must be very lucky cos my vet only charged ?50 as the emergency call out charge when I had to take Sophie on a Sunday. It made no difference as I would have paid it anyway but it seems to be good value compared to some of yours.

I had a message on our answer phone the other day from someone who said their cat had just been run over and they wanted another one! Somehow I don't think they will be getting one from us.

When I send out my neuter voucher's I always send a tips page and:-
WHY NEUTER? Please pass this information to anyone you know with cats even if they are strays we will help
Cats Protection encourages all cat owners to have their cat?s neutered/spayed. Quite simply there are far too many cats and just not enough caring homes. It?s all very well saying Oh! I always get good homes for my cats kittens, if that is the case why are we always so full and have a huge list of cats waiting to come in and where are all the tens of thousands of cats/kittens that Cats Protection take in each year coming from? And why are tens of thousands more put to sleep each year? Sadly most of them come from those so-called good homes. If there were not so many kittens available the thousands of kittens/cats that are put to sleep each year may stand a chance of adoption, and that good home you managed to find may have adopted one that has now been put to sleep. We appreciate that some come into care because of the owners ill health or a death in the family but the majority are simply not now wanted. Of course we are just one rescue, there are possibly as many again if not more being helped by other rescues. Please don?t be led into thinking that if everyone had their cat neutered/spayed they would die out, that is just not going to happen there are far too many irresponsible people for that. If there were a few less cats/kittens available would it be such a bad thing? Maybe just maybe they would be more valued and as a result of this perhaps we would not keep reading of the abuse and neglect so many suffer. Occasionally we are told I don?t want my cat ?done? I want it to have some fun, another word for fun is amusing, it is not very amusing when your cat gets a life threatening disease just because you wanted your cat to have some fun, is it?
At the rate companion animals are being bred, whether on purpose or by accident, there will never be enough homes. One intact cat can produce 80,000 off spring in just 10 years with only 2 surviving kittens per litter.
Breed rescues are also full to bursting.

I think you should have to have a license to breed all kinds of animals then it wouldn't be so easy for these low life's to get their hands on them >:( . Maybe you should have to have some sort of license to own pets too.

Wish my out of hours vets only charged that much!! It is so irritating when people who claim they can't afford treatment then want to get another animal, and while we would all say no, there are still so many people letting their cats have litters and then just giving them away to the first person who asks that they will get one, and it may be another one that ends up in a rescue.
Please spay your cat

If the lady couldn't afford the vet this time why the heck is she getting another cat she can't afford????some people are just really stoopid! So any furbabies that have the misfortune to go live there can't go to the vets because it costs too much?? Pet insurance should be law - you have to have insurance to drive a car - you should have to have it for your animals by law too! Then people have no excuse

Oh Ela....Don't know what to say...

Two of mine are black sweeties aged 17 and 2. Cannot contemplate not being able to afford vet treatment, even emergency treatment even if I were on my uppers which thankfully we're not.

Would definitely beg, steal (altho hope wouldn't come to that) or borrow if necessary even for this bloody monster Freddie WHO has now started to pee and poo behind the telly.? What is he like! (he had a fright from neighbours cat other night and not keen to go out now but neighbours cat not a bad lad at all in fact came from my brother!)

Mark your baby is stunning!

Unfortunately there is only one vet from the 6 the family could have reached that will let people pay weekly. I fully understand their reason and it is that they are owed thousands. We lend money to people and we too are owed thousands. People swear they woll pay you back even signing to do so, if you are lucky you get a couple of weekly payments then it stops.

It's a shame you can't record phone calls

That's awful Ela - surely in that situation one would find the money from somewhere, or as you say ask if one can pay in instalments. :(

It is with gritted teeth I usually speak to these sorts of people.

Yes the cat died. they do have another cat though.

The RSPCA could now do nothing as there is no pooof.

The sad thing is as mentioned she will get a cat/kitten from somewhere.

Hi Ela,

You did the right thing.? Trouble is, such people find another animal from somewhere.? It is so dispiriting.

And yes, I don't know of a vet who charges less than ?80 extra for out of hours 'emergency' treatment.? I wish they wouldn't do this though because it is the animals who suffer in the end. I realise of course there is no easy answer and everyone needs rest and recreation....even vets!

Hope the poor little babe didn't suffer too much.?

Best wishes,

Roz

I have just received a phone call from a lady who asked for a black kitten, she said her cat had been poisoned. I knew immediately (gut feeling) we didn't have one. (not for here any way).
Me:? ? ? ? ? ? Sorry we have no kittens.
Caller:? ? ? ? ?But the RSPCA told me to ring you
Me:? ? ? ? ? ? We have no kittens and the RSPCA do k not know what we have as indeed we have no idea?
? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ?what they have
Caller:? ? ? ? ?Do you have any black cats??
Me.? ? ? ? ? ? Will you be keeping a cat in now you think one has been poisoned?
Caller:? ? ? ? ?Well it was 12
Me:? ? ? ? ? ? !2 is not old and it does not matter if a cat is 2 or 20 it still needs to be seen by a vet.
Caller? ? ? ? ? Well it might have been poisoned or it may have got something in its throat, I could not get a vet?
? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ?to see my cat.
Me:? ? ? ? ? ? A vet would not refuse.
Caller:? ? ? ? ?They all wanted ?55 for emergency hours. (I don't know a vet who charges that it is much
? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ?more)? ?

There was more but how can I home? a cat to someone who cannot take a cat to the vet in an emmergency? Also the lady could not have tried too hard as there is one vet not too far from her where she lives who will let pay weekly.
