One of my cats is diabetic and when he seemingly developed this illness, he started drinking less. The only way he seemed interested in drinking water as regularly as he needed was if it was moving - he was ALWAYS in our sinks. (And still is sometimes!) We got given a catit fountain by one of the members on here (Thanks Sam

) and recently swapped it for a drinkwell fountain as the way the water runs is more like a tap. All four of our cats prefer the running water to the bowls, but they will drink from "normal" bowls if they're closer.

It is very interesting Mark ,but I will say that we have as many cats on wet food only with kidney disease, as those fed on dried. Also many of the special diets for Kidney problems tend to be dried.

I heard reports of catit not goiong down to well and also not lasting very long. I bought the drinkwell when we moved here which will be 3 years in Jan. It has been on the whole time and still works. the piece of plastic in front of the pump has broken off and the motor is getting furry. Also the plastic in the bowl is getting rough even though I descale it but still quite impressive lifespan

That's why I ordered the platinum - hoping its quieter than the old one

The catit is good too and only costs £19.99 from MPM products

I dont change the filter every 3 weeks

but they do help keep hair etc from reaching the pump, which is where you dont want it.

Ela, clinically cats who eat dry diet are dehydrated, not to the point they tent but in numbers.

I worked the running cost out wrong (I am trying to be low energy )
I thought they were 11 watts but they are less

Standard Drinkwell 6 watts = £5 a year
Platinum 2 watts = £1.60 a year

I think the platinum uses less as it has a transformer?

I want one for our lot for christmas, I see them all drinking which I never did with our old cat bluto but he wasn't allowed dry food so maybe that's why

I know the fountain makes kylie drink more than she used to so I will stick to my theory

I remember the reasons I bought it in the 1st place. She got into a bad habit of drinking from taps and I often found her sitting in the bathroom sink waiting for the tap to be turned on. It has cured that habit

- dirty cat paws in sink not good

Also when she did drink from a dish, she had her own technique - the paw went in the dish and she licked the paw - so the water was always dirty and being changed every 5 minutes - She doesn't do that with a drinkwell.

I just worked out it costs £9 a year to run if on 24/7

It is not very often I do not agree with you Mark but I have to say that over the years I have had numerous cats who only have or had dried, Dehydration has been no more of a problem to them than the cats fed on a wet diet. I can also speak for all the fosterers as any problem, I know about.

A lot of cats are dehydrated from eating dry food and the fountain encourages them to drink more - it really works.

Anyway, got an apologetic phone call saying they have spoken to the supplier who is posting a replacement plug/transformer and if it isn't here in a week, they will chase it for me

I bought a cheap charger for my ipod and the top pin snapped off and is still in the socket!! lol I just use it with the two pins!

It's not a normal plug, its a transformer - the plug is moulded for safety so not going to mess about with it in case water get in.
I don't want to risk electrocuting Kylie

Just the Plug that's Broken Mark ?? I would just put a new one on

and that would remove the hassle of sending it back, remember you did get it at a special price

Tip: Blue is neutral, Brown is Live

and the top pin of a plug is just the earth,(not all appliances are earthed) but you still need the top pin as it is a safety feature
to stop young children electricuting themselves by poking stuff in the terminals.
If you look at the top hole of the socket on the wall you will see a cover, this prevent's a current going out, when you put a
plug in, the top pin moves the safety cover and allows the current to flow

I'm not a sparky but learned of this while changing plug's onto different wall's

I was shocked !!............................................quite a few times

It arrived yesterday and I was going to set it up this morning as the old one has just about packed in. When I took it out of the box, there was a loose piece of plastic in the bottom. When I checked, it was the top pin of the mains lead plug that had snapped off. I don't think this could have happened in the post so must have been sent out like it. I have emailed them. One of the things I hate about online ordering is if there is a problem like this, the hassle of sending back

I now wish I had bought one in the local pet shop

The old Drinkwell had a proper mains lead but the new one has a transformer and the top pin is just plastic with no current running through.
