I wouldnt give an ill kitten a felv jab. Iv seen a few breeder sites of siamese and bengals who say not to use felv jab until they are a year old and strong enough to cope with it.
It certainly cant be transmitted by humans/other animals.

I started a thread about this virus sometime ago but cant find it so maybe it was on CatChat.

We had a kitten at the cattery with this virus, he was very very ill with it but did eventually make a recovery
(Can anyone get a link from Catchat ?)

but were advised that feline leukemia could be transmitted by humans and other animals alike, advise please?

The virus is very short lived outside the body and purely a feline thing.

It's a siamese, it will always be feisty. But just keeping things calm and rewarding positive behaviours, making sure no-one gets more cuddles than anyone else until they sort themselves out is the best way. As for interactions with you and your family, remember the siamese are unable to fully retract their claws. If it grabs a hold of you just relax whatever bit of you is engaged and it will lose interest and release. Sometimes you have to withdraw in stages as the movement inspires further grabbing, but eventually it will realise this is not good behaviour... All animals take time. My place is chaos central at present with two new cats, both from different sources and of different ages - bits of furniture, carpet and bills strewn around the floor amongst flying kitty bodies . It takes a while...

Dear All,

Kitty was taken to the vet who was not aware of Torovirus and had to refer to his books. He did however recommend the feline Leukemia jab as well as fortnightly worm treatments. We informed him that kitty was an indoor cat, but were advised that feline leukemia could be transmitted by humans and other animals alike, advise please?

Also kitty is still very feisty towards the family and dog, any tips on how best to socialise her would be appreciated please?

Kind Regards Gary

Is there a clause in the contract stating your parents have to have a vet visit done in x number of days? I would use my own vet rather than theirs though. Good luck, and as I said on the other thread, the breeder should have kept hold of the kitten.

third eyelid syndrome

My Jeannie had 3rd eyelid syndrome (commoners name ;D he was a kitten about 11 yrs ago and that was the first I had heard of it.  During her first year she had a couple of  recurrences but after that she was fine.

I most certainly would take the little one to the vet. Had we cat/kitten with this problem we may have homed it if the owner was prepared to take it immediately and  was fully aware of the problem  had no other cats and was home most of the day. We would also have paid for the vet fees at our vets for the problem. Of course we would also have been in constant contact with the new owner.

My last one was called Pavarotti, because of his lung capacity. The crossed eye has been bred out to  a certain extent these days as undesirable in show animals, along with the bent end to the tail and the 'apple' head. Our first had all three of these characteristics, her name was Natasha, but that was a long time ago

The breeder of this siamese kitten should be ashamed of themselves..If they knew it was even abit unwell it would of been proper to keep for an extra week. I hope this kitty has been fully vac etc, some breeders also give 6wks free insurance as well.

Take puss to the vets and send them the bill, i wouldnt use their own vet at all.....................Hope the poor mite is okay..

Regarding crossed eyed in siamese,,, I have a tortie point female who has a distinct crossed eyed however you never see ther third eyelid unless she is very unwell.. I love Siamese!!!!!!!!!I sit here with one on my lap and one ontop of my keyboard, both purring their little hearts out because they want some biscuits before i go to bed... !
Good luck with this little one and i would do some research on a lovely name,,,, One of my friends have a young siamese called Yindee (precious in Indian i think).. I rather liked that..........But i had another siamese girl in the past called Yoyo, which i liked much but have never thought to call another one of my siamese the same name, because they are all so unique in character and we remember them so well.

Cannot save the world, but if everyone does something we can have a jolly good job trying too....

Sorry i didnt read properly to start with and hadnt realised your parents actually have the kitten (whats its name ?)

I'd still strongly suggest they get her checked out with their own vet as at this stage if there was a major problem they'd still have some sort of come back i'm sure.

They have had Siamese cats before and the third eyelid is definately more pronounced. No signs of diarrhoea but kitty is not drinking fluids but seems to be eating okay. I too feel that the breeder should have been more up front and kept her till the problem had gone.

Are the 3rd eyelid showing MORE than is normally common in perfectly healthy siamese ?

Your parents would be daft to buy this kitten without and independant veterinary examination first.

it does the torovirus is self limiting (like a cold in humans) and usually lasts 5 - 10 days .... it would have made more sense for the breeder to hang onto the kitten for an extra week before handing him/her over to ensure he was fully recovered.

BTW did he come fully vaccinated with his pedigree papers?

you clever little googlers you. Still, the breeder is completely irresponsible not to have conveyed this information at the time of selling on the kitten. If it were me, I would be telling them I would hold them responsible for any veterinary costs, any responsible and reputable breeder would have no problems with this approach. If they baulk then also make sure the vet checks the kitty for any other possible problems that might arise from dodgy breeding practice. Am very angry about this. I would never have passed on a kitten in such condition when I was breeding!!! :mad2: :mad2: :mad2:

Well done Mark.

I have now done a torovirus search and found:

http://www.sniksnak.com/cathealth/torovirus.html  ... third eyelid syndrome and torovirus

http://www.provet.co.uk/infectiousdiseases/5a6da01.htm

I take back what I said about the breeder lying ... sorry.  I would still suggest little one having a check up at the vet though just to be sure.

I'm sorry to be so blunt but I think this breeder is lying to your in-laws ... however that is not the issue at the moment.  I would strongly suggest your in-laws get the kitten to their Vet ASAP and get them to give it a full check over.  As we all know at 13 weeks old kittens can go downhill very quickly.

I would definately contact your own vet - just for peace of mind if nothing else.  Did your parents see the kitten prior to collecting her ?

I googled it as one word - enteritis?

Torovirus (Tor·o·vi·rus) (tor”o-vi´r?s) [torus + virus ]  the toroviruses; a genus of viruses of the family Coronaviridae having a tubular nucleocapsid that may bend into an open torus; organisms cause gastrointestinal disease. It includes Berne and Breda viruses, as well as human and porcine toroviruses.

The only "toro virus" I can find on the internet is Punta Toro Virus (Bunyaviridae, Phlebovirus) but I get the impression this is VERY rare due to the lack of information available.

Will keep searching and see if I can find anything else.

never heard of Toro virus, and why would it clear up if no treatment is given (though granted virus do not necessarily respond to treatment). It is was sick, the breeder should have told them that on the day they collected it, not after they rang to find out why it's third eyelid was coming half across its eye. While Siamese are more prone to this than most breeds (at least mine were more so inclined), I would be off to my own vet for a more reliable diagnosis and telling the 'breeder' that they will be getting the bill.

Third eye visable in kitten and Toro Virus?
« Reply #1 on: August 21, 2007, 19:26:20 PM »
Dear All,

Thanks for all your advice. The in-laws have chosen a 13 week old Siamese Seal Point, which they collected on Sunday. The kitten has not yet settled in yet and they have noted that the third eye is very visible, which I believe could signify some ailment. They have contacted the breeder who assured them that it was brought to the attention of the vet who says it is Toro Virus and that it should clear up in 7 - 14 days. As anyone else heard of this virus?
