they've lost a few cats and can take no more in for the forseeable future

I know of one in Yorkshire.

This feral mum and kittens came in not to far from the Yorkshire border and I think the nearest city to there would be the place where I know one outbreak is and only found out about that after we lost our little ones, although there must be at least 10 miles of open countryside between the two places.

I suppose this is another reason why Cats Protection do not like fosterers to have more than 12 cats including their own and do not approve of mixing cats from different situations. Sometimes although they can look so well we just do not know what they are carrying.

Any news on the little one Ela ?

Sadly it has gone to Rainbow Bridge, I learnt the news about the time you posted your post.

Also many rescues are too young or too ill for vaccination so risks to rescues extremely high;hence needs for isolation and good husbandry.

I think it is this sort of reason why Cats Protection do not really like a fosterer to have more than one litter at a time, although I appreciate this is more difficult when there is a one man band fosterer and in reality an ideal world situation.

Thank goodness most cats are vaccinated against this, it can kill so quickly.

We have all our cats and kittens injected for everything they can be injected for, unfortunately these kittens and mum had only been  for a very few days. it is do sad.

So many dont see the need for isolation this just shows how very important it is especially as this virus can survive for up to 2 years on soft furnishings.

I think sometimes some in rescue only realize the implications of mixing when something tragic like this happens. and sadly lessons learnt. It was years ago when I saw a foster wiped out with enteritis that I appreciated why Cats Protection ask that cats from different situations are not mixed. Because this little one and kittens were  feral we had nowhere else for them but  the tack room. which is well away from the cat pens and farm cats. Of course no others will be put in there for a very long time. Thankfully away from our pens and the ferals out on the farm. Although everywhere is washed down regularly with Virkon or similar today Virginia is going over everywhere again.

The very word Panleukopenia chills me to the core and I am praying that it is not this terrible virus which often kills so many before owners realise the kitten is ill. Hopefully because of Virginia`s and your vets quick action this little one may pull through;yes it can be done so dont give up hope.

Panleukopenia virus.

We took in a feral Mum and 3 Kittens a few days ago from a farm, Virginia found 2 of the kittens dead yesterday morning and all types of worms were coming from them, the third kitten looked well but was taken to the vets, it has tested neg for FIV & Felv but is deteriorating fast although on a drip and antibiotics, the vet feels it may be  Panleukopenia virus. Apparently there is quite a bit about. I am so pleased that we never mix any cats and kittens from different situations. Hopefully if it is that at least it infection should be isolated. Nevertheless a very worrying time.
