yes definitly. If the computer has a built in mike (which is extremly unlikely) it will pick up all the hum and whine and drone of your computer's fans etc anfd it will pick up all sorts of extraneous noise that you wouldn't normally hear . The recording would be useless. Put the mike pointing at the cat on a stable surface and the sound will be awesome with less background noise . Naturally you would still pick up cars going by and aeroplanes and next doors dog barking and the fridge etc .
PC World or Comet Currys Dixons etc would prob have a simple computer microphone . Don't let them try to sell you an expensive SKYPE jobbie
this is all you need for under a fiver anywhere

All computers have a built in sound card . All you have to do is buy a cheap computer microphone for about £5   and plug it in the sound card jack socket of your PC

There will be some simple recording software under accessories although if you have a Mac I have no idea where it would be.

Alternatively simply google for `mac recording software ' or `mac sound editing software'   and you'll find plenty of free to download sound recorders.

The quality of sound from  a proper PC microphone is 10x times better than fones or cameras etc.

If you let me know what PC you have I'll see if I can find everthing you need and guide you through it. We still have a full digital recording studio left over from our business but its all PC based not Mac .

I think they have a no-quibble guarantee. I worked in Shepherds Bush argos over xmas - it was a long time ago (25 years ago!) but they had loads of hi-fis returned after xmas and they said it happened every year as people used them for parties then took them back. Even so, they refunded as it was policy.

I did some more on the mobile phone and it's sooooo faint, no good at all. On the other hand the screen got wet from his runny nose as I shoved it right up against his furry face :D

In the 70's I had cat purrs from my cat Tinker that I recorded on cassette -not even sure they make cassettes now? - I wouldn't have a clue how to record. Apparently my camera records movies and sound as I did it by mistake the other day after having it for 3 years - but the sound isn't that great. At least with the old tape recorder you could turn the record level right up.

ooh thanks everyone! It's so great, I posted on a techie forum and got no replies....everyone thinking we've got a live one here    but here you all understand just how NECESSARY this is of course!

I've tried my phone. It's a K750i and the sound's awful.  I have an old digital camera and I will check the manual to see if it can do sound, maybe with an external mic.
£55 is a lot of beans yes, for me right now. I would have to motivate the purchase too by saying it was for work ahem cough 
I want to get really close up to him as sometimes he does 'variations on a purr' like freeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeepurrrrr, mostly to do with his cold but ver sweet.
hmm, if all the purring is on your phones, can you amplify it and use it as a ringtone

I have Tiggy's purr on my phone    It was done on my old phone - it had a voice recorder on it aswell as video and I bluetoothed it to my new one

yep my camera acts as a wee camcorder, if i dont want to tape a picture as such i just leave the lens cover on LOL.

I have used a Minidisc recorder (borrowed from a friend) to record Reggie's purr and then transferred it to CD.

Do ya have a mobile phone that records sound? Most do now.  I have recorded Greek crickets to Cat purrs on mine then transfered it to pc as a wav file. (wave file) Think you can up load wav files here by attaching but if not, i can easily set it so you can

Swampy has what an elderly friend described as "such a lovely dark brown purr".  I'd love to record it but am wondering if anyone has a great idea about the best way. A mac fiend friend says to use iMovie on my mac (gulp; I am only starting to explore the computer) which presumes that Swamps is sitting right next to it - happens sometimes.
Someone else said use a digital voice recorder and recommended one at £55 that they said was good.
Can anyone think of a way to do it? I'd like to store it on the computer and then put it on DVD with his photos and some video clips. When I can work out how (not exactly as clued up as Helen et al being an old brebis*).

*that's french for ewe as in ewe're an old brebis now
