I just received this email from my vet
Dear Client,
I am contacting all our clients on email with a warning that has been
issued through the Veterinary Times regarding so-called spot on flea
preparations that are sold by shops. The number of cats dying from the
use of permethrin-based products which are applied by owners to their
pets is on the increase. We are advised that the term Spot On should no
longer be used and that pet owners who do purchase the non-licensed
products available at shops and supermarkets should read the
instructions and warnings thoroughly.
At the end of the day the safest and most effective way of treating
your
pet for fleas is to consult your veterinary surgeon and to purchase
licensed products that are thoroughly tested and are both effective and
safe.
If you have any queries on this matter please do not hesitate to
contact
your veterinary practice.
As far as this Veterinary Practice is concerned we depend on Stronghold
and Prac-tic for flea or flea and tick control. These are both licensed
products with good safety margins and a high level of efficacy.
In line with current advice we recommend applying either Stronghold or
Prac-tic once monthly and give Milbemax worm tablets every 3 months
