no not at all sarah, nor would i entertain head vn..if i do return to that line of work i'll be quite happy being a little minion and just getting on with the actual job..the rest brings far too much stress, hassle and politics with it  :tired:

To be honest the only way a vet practice manager would be doing that is if they were probably a partner/owner of the company.  All pay scales are appropriate to the role so a nurse in that job gets a nurses salary with xx extra and the same goes for a vet, if they were a normal employee they'd get vets wages with xx extra i should imagine.

However ............. less than a year before i left work a woman was taken on and she was the main office worker who also would do all salaries and book work, she was labelled "practice manager" and in fact should not had that title nor should she had anything to do with the ordering/drugs / rep side of things, she of course thought she was in charge of us all and after 2 wks of being in her role (only other previous animal experience she had was being a pet owner) she sat me down and "explained" to me about this "new anaesthetic " she had got a  leaflet on...... This was me who was not only qualified but had worked beside vets in a very hands on role since i was 15 years old , not only that but had been ordering and using this "new" anaesthetic gas in practice for 2 years  >:(  That was just the shape of things to come with her interference and talk about brown nosing up the bosses backside  >:(   He of course thought she was utterly wonderful  :tired:

people like that crack me up :tired:

i just imagined a prac manager would usually be a vet. so wage - wise, if a VN was to be practice manager, would he/she earn the same as what a vet as practice manager would??

if a vn is going to entertain the role of practice manager i think providing they are very experienced they can do a great job, however this means that really their hands on vn role would/should probably take a background seat.  Practice managers obviously have the smooth running of the surgery as their main role.

Head vn's are normally responsible and in charge of the rest of the vn staff and over seeing trainee's etc, also the head vn in many places are the ones who do most if not all the ordering for the practice and see reps etc (i was head vn)  I think a vn as a practice manager could combine those roles.

I'm sure in the much bigger practices / hospitals its far more efficient with dedicated office staff/animal staff.

nope i think vets must do most of their practice in uni to be honest and of course like driving a car, you learn most after you pass your test so i never really liked working with new grads but we all have to start ...even human docs

but its entirely different with docs, vets as they cant gain employment in the first place without their qualifications, i think that should be the same for vn's and there should be a structured level of staff ie vets, nurses and then also technichians who can do all that crap stuff and cleaning  :evillaugh:  This could easily be managed by in practice training, so apart from trainee nurses who have to have a dedicated mentor at an approved training practice "lay staff" shouldnt get their hands on animals other than to pet them.

Not that long before i started at my old place it was still in the dark ages..the receptionist (been there for 25 years) gave all dogs the same shot of acp when they came in through the door...same needle and syringe and it was left sticking in the bottle
after i started i nearly decked a part time afternoon receptionist as she stood and argued point blank it was merely my job to bring the animal to its owner but her job to explain what had been done and dispense meds   she didnt even know the details of what went on in a spay for f'k sake  >:(   I soon sorted her out  :shify:

plain and simple mm...they SHOULDNT do any of the work only permitted with a vn qualification and those practices who do make me furious.  if they are that competant then they shouldnt have any problems sailing through their many exams

Interesting, i did wonder at the time but couldnt really start questioning due to the circumstances. Doesnt make you have much faith in the system, tell me that "vets" cant do the same thing? That would be scary!

VN's certainly do more than i thought, they seem the backbone of a good practice  ;D

Its has become so strict for qualifieds its a joke and a cause of great disharmony in vn's, in some instances orrible untrained farmers are being given more legal rights and permitting to do more than us who have studied.

There are now diplomas we can do which is great, you have to be qualified for 2 years before you're allowed to start studying for that, i was about to when i fell preg with connor and that put paid to that, i'll never do it now.  MInd you even with that it didnt alter the surgical authorisation.

in many ways we are more qualified and definately do a heck of a lot more than the general qualified human nurse ( ie they have to specialise indiviually to do x-rays but that was a daily part of my job) but have always got less recognition (partly because of "lay staff" acting in the role) and the role is being even more demoralised..its not good and certainly not reasons to encourage others to get into it nor further themselves thats...its a crying shame coz good vn's are or atleast can be invaluable

I liked castrating and wish there was more under schedule 3 act nurses could do, some of us were more than competant.  MInd you legally/technically qualified vn's arent even allowed to do that now "not allowed to incise into the body cavity" and they refined feline castrate as just that where as before it wasnt.

oh and the reason there are no stitches inside is because they tie and not stitch, on the outside its common for a wee bit of swelling, bruising so if they stitched that up the scrotum would balloon and cause further discomfort and problems, it heals in a couple of days.

Had just written a bit to explain when i have found this, i think you should watch..click on the feline castration bit, thats a "closed castration" which only 1 vet i've worked with did it that way, most vets ive worked with do the open technique which is basically the same but with a difference that doesnt make any alterations to the outcome or insicion.

http://images.google.co.uk/imgres?imgurl=http://cvm.msu.edu/courses/VM557/Surgery/Feline%2520Castration%2520-%2520Screen%2520Shot.jpg&imgrefurl=http://cvm.msu.edu/courses/VM557/Surgery/&h=240&w=320&sz=43&hl=en&start=0&sig2=bJMV4GV_YYI0rJP9fEdQqA&um=1&tbnid=lk7HyLB0-Bka6M:&tbnh=89&tbnw=118&ei=AZuwRvSJDIOgwAHGh4zmDg&prev=/images%3Fq%3Dhow%2Bto%2Bfeline%2Bcastration%26svnum%3D10%26um%3D1%26hl%3Den%26sa%3DN

When i castrated i used the open method as i never got the hang of closed, i however have witnessed some real old fashioned type who just twisted and pulled   I dont think thats a safe method as there was nothing to stop a bleeder other than hoping you had twisted and damaged the vessels enough, thankfully most of that old farmer type vets are retired now  ;)

and i think the reason they are no stitches is because the whole they make in the Testicles to do this  is so small it doesnt need stitching
