Max has always done this as well, we've nicknamed it ninging, not sure why, just imagine him thinking 'ning ning' while he's chomping on them.

..... I'll get me coat  :shy:

Yep Madam Lexy does this too. Sits back pushes her belly back and then brings the back paws up one at a time... the yanking on the nails is awful to watch I really did think she was going to pull her nails out doing that.

Like lynn very relieved that other cats do this and Lexy isn't abnormal. Well not much anyway  :evillaugh:

Oh yes, Toby does this too - with a great degree of thoroughness, might I add.  :evillaugh:

He'll sit in the carpet in the hallway and let rip - and you can hear him from upstairs...

well i'm glad to hear all this, it certainly isnt something my big boys do at all, they happily go around with the dirt under their nails..filthy boys  :tired:

Since it does seem to get worse as the nails are longer perhaps he is trying to sort them out, funny its just something he's been doing noticably in the past month or two  :-:

Oh, crickey, when they start doing their nails, they can be worse then women ever are!   They usually start at bed time when they're sitting right next to your head and you're trying to nod off.... Drives you nuts!  :-[ :evillaugh:

Sometimes, they chomp so loudly you think someone is trying to kick the door in...  :shy:

Cats shed the outer layer of their claws. The front paws they normally strip by stropping them our your furniture, the back ones they normally strip by chewing on them. It can be quite an intense and detailed manicure..........

Zephyr does this as well ... the worst is when he's biting his back claws ... he proper crunches em! ewwwww.
In ancient times cats were worshiped as gods; they have not forgotten this.

i did at one point wonder if he was using his nails to floss his teeth  :evillaugh:

When he does it he can be rather fixated so i normally use that as a cue to go and clip his nails, i have to say...thinking about it that maybe does help for a while.

Hi Lynn

Nina does this as well. Not just nibbling them down , but really chomping and pulling on them. Saying that she rarely needs her nails clipping whereas Kiki doesn't do it and her nails a like razor wire!

My OH can't bear her doing it, the noise sets his teeth on edge!

Never really thought about, just though it was Nina being obsessive about grooming as she normally is  :tired:

So any ideas would be welcomed by me too!

Nails cleaning or chewing ?
« Reply #1 on: July 16, 2007, 19:01:19 PM »
Lately i have observed Cody not exactly biting/chewing his nails but pulling them through his teeth if that makes any sense, think if you had something under your own nails (that you'd just been eating) and you might use your teeth to clean your nail afterwards.  THe only example i can think of was when i was eating a fairly sticky chocolate muffin last week i had some under my nail.

Cody does this when he has been grooming but can be rather thorough about it (although cody is an exceptionally fussy cat about his grooming and looks LOL), front or back feet.  He never really used to do this but even hubby has commented on it so its not just me.

any suggestions / comments ?  I suppose i am just worried he is going to end up having some weird behavioural problem, on that note he's not stressed or doing anything else (except the duvet peeing but we already know thats just cody's bad habit and not as a result of something else)

I have been trying to think if he's done it more since the new carpets went down.
