On the morning of July 1st, 2015 the last member of The Original Posse went to join her friends. Sage was only a tiny scrap of a cat when she came to live with us, and it became clear from the offset that she loved John unequivocally. She’d sit with him for hours while he read, content; unlike most kittens, to purely just “be.” She was a funny, sweet, gentle little girl who never lashed out, not even when she was nervous or scared. (This was often, because she was extremely highly strung; as am I, which led to a comparative of Sage being my feline counterpart.)
Sage only ever truly enjoyed feline playtime with one other cat; Parsley. After Parsley passed away, Sage tended to find toys she could entertain herself with. She would wait until people were in bed, before finding a tiny toy mouse and batting it around. If people came to see what was happening, she’d freeze, and pretend she’d not been doing anything quite so enjoyable at all. She only ever caught one piece of prey; a mouse. And when I told her she wasn’t to do that, she dropped the mouse and I never saw her catch anything again.
As she grew older, despite still being skitty, she grew more confident in ensuring she had her own space. It was wonderful to see.
She was exceptionally well behaved, and never seemed to want any more than she had. Her ability to “just be” continued throughout her life. Being content with her lot and enjoying how loved she was. She still is; that doesn’t change, purely because you can no longer hold someone and tell them the love is there.
The afternoon of the 1st saw a sudden torrential downpour with the most wonderful thunderstorm. And just one perfect lightening flash. I’m hoping that’s Sages way of telling me she’s back with the others, and feeling happier now. And I hope she realises just how loved she’ll always be.
Take care, my beautiful Little Cat. Enjoy playtime with Parsley, I know she’ll be glad to see you. I will love you, always.
