Between 5am and 6am, I often get stereo purring (Noni and Ruby) with Billy Whiz joining in with his meeping.  At that time in the morning, it just sounds like a right, royal racket  :tired: :tired: ;)

George has the loudest purr I have heard on a cat and is very enthusiastic lol.  If I've had a stressful day at work it calms me down and makes me smile.  I love him soooooo much.

Ollie has a "normal" purr.  You can hear it but it is a lot quieter than George.  He's a lap cat and I love it when he settles down on me and purrs away.

Milly has a purr that you can't hear at all.  The only way you know that she is purring is by feeling it. 

Just love their various purrs

Much depends on the cat too, so you learn by listening to what pitch of purr they have at different times.  I've tended to find when a cat purrs in pain, the pitch is lower and the purr is slower, and the purr isn't quite so "enthusiastic" as when they're purring from contented purr activity.

A purr has to be on of the most delightful sounds known to cat Men and Cat Ladies when it derives from pleasure.  And I just love teh idea of stereo purring, but our two would never sit still long enough to permit us to clamp them to either side of the head, unless we fancied having an eye out as they kicked to wriggle free  :evillaugh:

Puss purrs all the time too. Penny likes to wrap herself round your head when you are in bed and purr away. I haven't had any experience in pain purring though.

I agree, cat purrs for all sorts of reasons but they leave you to figure out why!! Typical!

If your cat has gone off food and water, acting strangely and not quite right then straight to a vets of course!


Enjoy the purrs, i love it when Millie purrs so much her body lifts up like she's taking off!!!

My Denzel purrs the most easily, but has the most pathetic snotty sounding purr I have ever heard!

After volunteering at a rescue for a year, I still have to yet to find a purr like it  :rofl:

Its quite funny when you have a 'semi-feral' kitten you are trying to socialise and when they hear themselves purring they get confused  :rofl:  :Crazy:  :rofl: like 'what is happening to me?? I'm scared but I like it!'

I think that purring is a comforting symptom, 'your with me i like it don't stop' or 'this will make me feel better'  i don't think there is different sorts of purrs, purring is just purring but done for different reasons... mummy cats purr so there tiny deaf and blind kittens can find them for survival not pleasure....

sounds and vibrations are amazing

cats are amazing they purr.....

My George is like Zoonie.  He's always purring, even if you just look at him or say his name. I was just curious as, although I have cats for years I never knew that they could also purr for reasons other than being extremely happy and content.

Yes, I think a purr always sounds the same. Its not like a meow which can have different meanings.

Agree with Sam, you have to have the bigger picture.

I don't think you can tell just by listening to the purr but the body language can tell you if it's a pain purr or a pleasure purr.  A pleasure purr will usually be from a cat that is rubbing against you, being stoked or generally looking happy.  A pain purring cat will be quiet,  hunched up and not looking happy and not wanting to interact and be touched.

Hello

Just wondered if anybody could help with this question.

Cats purr when they are contented and happy etc., but they also can purr if they are in pain.  I just wondered if you can tell by listening which purr it is. 

Sorry if it seems a silly question but it is just that apparently cats are really good at hiding pain and sometimes will purr to calm themselves.
