Well Jess had eaten alot of his prescription diet food last night so we didn't boil any chicken and did what the vet suggested and carried on with the Walth (which he did prescribe instead of starving), he had his final sachet this morning so we be back on small doses of normal food tonight, his toilets and normal as well.

Jess has been his normal self throughout all this which is good and the vet did say that he wasn't suffering in anyway it was just unpleasent when he went to the toilet.

I do cook chicken breasts from frozen if I have been daft enough not to pull them out of the freezer!! I put it in a casserole dish, cover with water, and 20-30 mins later (depends on how defrosted it was), it is ready, I use Gas mark 5. I dont usually use the microwave, have done it in the past, but it didn't go down well.
Please spay your cat

Hi JM

WHen my mum made boiled chicken soup for us, it was just with a little salt in the water and olive oil and just let it boil until the chicken fell off the bone.  She used to start the broth with some onion saute and then putting salt and water over, usually boiling from the kettle and then put the chicken in whole or pieces.   Obviously not the same if you are going to boil bland for Jess, but I think the principle is the same without all the add ons, just boil some water and put the chicken in.

Someone else may have an idea of what to do to make sure it boils tender so its easy for him to eat.

I make chicken soup all the time and it comes out tender - I just bring it to the boil and then simmer for about 1/2 hour (I usually use free-range drumsticks as they are quite cheap but a lot of meat comes off when you boil them)

My goodness , I didn't realizs anyone would attempt to cook chicken from frozen.

I did that very thing on Sunday when I forgot to get a chicken out of the freezer the day before  ;D  Tis perfectly safe as long as you allow a longer cooking time (approx 50% longer) and test it to make sure it's cooked properly.  I found out it was safe to do that when I was looking online for information about defrosting chicken.

personally.....not meaning to sound mean i would as vet suggested "starve for 24 hrs".......cos if not chances are your gonna have to do it another day........just keep the water out, a starving cat (im sure would eat most things) so technically....your cat is not starving.....dont beat yrself up over it ;)

Poor Jess   Hope he starts to feel better soon.

I asked the very same Q on Cat Chat when Tiggy was  poorly about boiling chicken so you're not alone!  I did it in the microwave in a pyrex dish, cover the chicken with water and cover the whole dish with cling film - don't use the pyrex lid as the  seal is not tight enough.  The chicken ended up having a party on the roof of my microwave the first time I did it  :evillaugh:

I also kept the water the chicken was kept in for Tiggy to drink, that was very popular too and will be great for Jess if he is dehydrated through having the diarrhoea.

The vet did suggest starving for 24 hours but if I didn't want to do that he would give me some prescritpion food which he did but Jess hasn't eaten it so I wanted to know whether this was technically the same as starving which when I seeked professional veterinary advice it is.

Just shows what I know then absolutly nothing,   as if my vet had told me to starve my cat for 24 hours I would have done just that and would not have considered chicken as a form of starvation

and frozen in the middle, in a branch of a well known fast food franchise.

Only ever had one fast food meal and that was in Switzerland one Christmas Eve afternoon when all the restaurents closed about two o'clock and we were desperate. It was that or starve until about 7 o'clock. Mind you even then it took all my powers of persuasion to get my husband to have even a bite.

I put it in the micowave to thaw it, but I'm not confident that the job's been done properly, so I usually cut it in half to be sure. You could just cook it, then test it but I'm a bit paranoid as I once had a piece of ckicken that was cooked on the outside and frozen in the middle, in a branch of a well known fast food franchise. I left without paying of course! (that was many years ago, when you could eat before paying.)

Jess's Mum, I'm guessing that you really mean "how can you be sure the chicken is cooked?", in which case the answer is, if you cut it, or put a skewer into the thickest part of it, any juices that come out are clear. If the juice is pink it's undercooked. That's more likely to happen if you cook chicken from frozen.

Incidentally, and this might sound stupid but how do you boil chicken!?

Having never boiled chicken I may be wrong but I would have thought you just put the chicken in a pan with some cold water and bring to the boil and leave it on till its cooked. I cook my Jessica's in the Micrawave it takes about  7 min for 5 fillets.

do you think it would be okay to give him some boiled chicken tonight?

I personally would starve the littleone for the 24 hours as the vet suggested. I know it is hard for you to know the little one is hungry but possibly worth it in the end. Please ensure fresh water is available, or alternatively lactaid.

As per my post below, the vet recommended starving Jess for 24 hours, as I didn't think we'd manage this so we opted for the Walth diet (chicken and rice) he hasn't touched any of this he didn't like it at all, so technically his been starved, do you think it would be okay to give him some boiled chicken tonight?

Incidentally, and this might sound stupid but how do you boil chicken!?

Thanks
