Tiggy's Mum that is so strange because that's just what I was thinking. Was surprised to see a ginger boy I'd got it in my head he was a tabby.

Even stranger seeing as Rumletum's profile pic is of a black cat and a white with small amount of tabby - wonder where on earth our 'vision' of Basil came from?!   :evillaugh:

Oddly enough, I thought that too - and what do I see today - an extremely hansum ginger boy!!!   :wow: :wow: :wow:  :Luv2:  Good job I wasnt loooking for him either, as I may have just slipped him in my backpack and snoozled him before returning him home.  ;) :evillaugh:

Hi again,  the picture I have on my profile is of my two 'Bridge' cats Buster Bunny and Morticia Muffin.  Part of my strategy for finding Basil was to invoke their help to guide him home. For what it's worth, I also prayed - a lot- I'm not especially religious but it did make me feel better.

In addition to posters, fliers and searching, I sprinkled the contents of the vacuum and litter tray outside. Also, every evening, I went out into the garden and called for Basil while shaking the biscuit tin. This would have normally brought him home. Of all the things we did IMHO, this is possibly the most important, especially if we believe that missing cats are hiding near their homes.

That's great news, thanks for the update. I'm sure Basil will be back to normal very soon, and you can return to something approaching normality yourself.

After my Beau was found (missing only 1 week) he became quite clingy and has remained that way. He now suffers from separation anxiety whenever we go on holiday which manifests as peeing on my shoes/bag/mail and telling me off (this involves just one sharp bite on my hand when I get home!)  ;)

hello again, The vet has given Basil a clean bill of health other than he has lost 1kg in weight. She agreed that perhaps he was trapped but, his paws and claws show no sign of him trying  to claw his way out. We will never know, I just hope it was an unpleasant experience that he won't want to repeat!
He wants to go outside but the vet said to keep him in for a few more days, just to be sure he's ok. Because he is now so boney he could more easily hurt himself if he fell. He wouldn't stand a chance against another cat!
I sincerely hope that all of our missing cats come home. Never lose hope. They are all out there somewhere.

Thank you everyone.  I couldn't sleep a wink last night. The little rascal slept beside me and it felt great. I will keep him indoors for a few days and take him to the vet when they open after the holiday today. Basil doesn't seem that hungry but I have to go out to get some of the food that he prefers, Look at how quickly we have reverted to the slave/master roles.
I put a collar on him straight away although he always wears one with our number in it. We use the quick-release ones though and when he came home, he was not wearing one.

So, to everyone at Purrs, thanks so much for all of the support. I am going to be looking into getting those tracking collars / gps as I don't want to go through that again.

So happy for you  :cheer: this is exactly why you should never give up hope, and I think you knew in your bones he was alive.  ;D

Do take him to the vet, he may be severly de-hydrated and need some remedial help. Also please do keep him inside for a few days to break his wanderlust, if that's what he has. Fit a collar and tag with your phone number on before he goes out again then if someone has kept him inside deliberately and he goes back there, they will know he has a home.

Very, very relieved for you, and your OH must be so relieved too.

Hello everyone, Basil came home tonight after nearly 5 weeks. He appeared on the terrace and it was like a dream. I opened the door and was so scared that he might run away as he looked a bit unsure. He came in and started to meow very loudly. I put some food down and he ate a little bit. He then tried to go out again - over my dead body!! He is very thin but his coat is in great condition. As today and tomorrow are public hols here I will keep him indoors for at least 24 hours, longer if possible, then i may take him to the vets. He seems a bit disoriented but that's not really suprising after being on the lam for so long.
Honestly, I can hardly believe it - I'm still shaking.
Anyway, I hope that those of you who are searching for your cats will take heart from this experience. I was honestly beginning to lose heart. All leads had dried up and it seemed absolutely hopeless. I honestly thought that I would never see him again. Please never give up hope, miracles do happen. I sincerely hope that you all have such a happy ending. My thoughts are with you all.

You could try an animal communicator. It's all down to whether you believe in it but some of them do claim to be able to contact animals and can help in a situation like this.
Personally I'm on the fence as far as it is concerned.

Yes, neutered cats are far less likely to stray for breeding or territory purposes, but if he's been scared away by something he may simply not want to come back. Good luck with your visit to the Town Hall tomorrow.  :(

I do hope you find him.

Hello again,  Since Basil left, I seem to have read every article ever written on the psychology of missing cats and how to find them. I have only read those written by sensible cat - people/shelters etc. The main thing seems to be that, with a neutered male, he is more likely to be very close to home. Even if he has been chased or frightened, he still should be not too far away. It also seems that a scared cat will hide under houses etc and not reveal himself. What puzzles me about that is, eventually he is going to want to move - for food and water. So, that being the case, why not venture home? Or, are they so scared that they stay hidden forever? We have a motion activated camera on the terrace where the cats enter the house. It is on overnight but he has never shown up.  Some article say that such cats are often absorbed into the feral population. Where we live, is a relatively new part of the village and in seven years I have not seen any feral cats in this area. The far side of the village is much much older and I have been told that there are lots of cats roaming about although I see remarkably few on my searches down there. Most cats around us seem to belong to neighbours. So far , although we have had numerous responses to our fliers and posters, there has been no confirmed sighting of Basil. Every time I get a call I go to investigate immediately and usually, I will return again to that area. He has been 'seen' all over the place but ironically, not anywhere near his home. To the back of us there is countryside fields and vineyards for several miles but no houses. Do you think that he could just be hiding in the countryside. I have always assumed that he would stay close to houses on the offchance of finding food, but obviously I know nothing about cats.  When our neighbour's cat went missing for 6 weeks I always assumed that he had been living rough out in the fields but that was before reading all these articles.  Tomorrow I must go with a friend to our townhall to see if anyone has reported finding a body. Horrible but it must be done. Wish me luck.

Cats have an amzing ability to map and you may be right and he is trying to find his original home.

I didnmt think that worked when cats had travelled by car but it does and my first cat Kocka went on holiday with me at age about 19yrs, health deterioting and we had a lovely Christmas/NY in Devon. I usede to take her out on a harness and lead and also at the service stations.

Our first service stop on the way home we went for a walk and let her lead the way and suddenly realized she was taking me to the way we came in and was walking back to Devon  ;D

Simarly with Sasa who at the time I couldnt touch, she knew when we turned the corner into my road and she used bounce around in the carrier cos she was coming home.

Cats are the most incredible creatures  :wow:

Hello Gill, I have reread the thread and it certainly is uplifting. If I was in the UK I would feel better as there are so many resourses there that are lacking here. However, I have been impressed with the response from local people to our fliers and posters. There is a lot of sympathy for Basil and us even though as I have said before, French people would just accept the fact that he has gone and would not look for him. In fact, some English people we know in another village, lost their cat the same day as Basil and they have not done anything, other than a quick search.
Funnily enough I was just remembering what we were told when we found Basil at the shelter which is  a good 30 minute drive away. We went there in the afternoon and selected Ollie and Basil. While we were waiting for the paperwork to be done, the lady said that just that morning, the person who had found him wandering had called to see if he had been adopted . So they were thrilled that they could now give her good news. If I understood her correctly, he was found wandering at a campsite near the coast. He was wearing a collar but had no ID. So, obviously he had once belonged to someone who cared enough to give him a collar. He must have been about 18months old when found, and, it was in April too! I do hope that he is lucky again and is found by a caring person who will try to help him. I have already informed the shelter that he is missing but as it is a longish way away it is a very longshot that he would end up back there. There is a very very small part of me that wonders if he is trying to find his original home after almost 6 years with us?
