James Wong believes that if you are going to the trouble of growing your own fruit and veg you might as well take the plunge and choose delicious, high-yield foods that are expensive to buy in the shops yet easy to grow.  Here are 2 of his recommended ’stars’ and each packet comes with instructions on how to sow and grow as well as a recipe idea.


Inca berries
Tasting of gooseberries with a hint of tropical fruit, inca berries are related to tomatoes but much less demanding to grow, in fact they are said to thrive on neglect.  The berries, each one wrapped in its own paper lantern, have the habit of falling off when ripe so you don’t need to agonise about when to harvest them but typically they fruit from late summer to late autumn and sometimes right up until Christmas.  They are suitable for growing in pots or grow bags.


Wild white strawberries
These pineapple-flavoured bonsai-sized strawberries are one of the easiest fruit crops to grow and being white they are virtually invisible to marauding birds.  Unlike most fruit plants they tolerate light shade so can be planted under taller crops but are also suitable for pots or window boxes.

On offer is one packet of each of the above and if you’re generous I’ll throw in a small packet of Thompson & Morgan Tomato ‘Alicante’ seeds.
