SAVE OUR BADGERS - SIGN 38 DEGREES PETITION!

UPDATE:

On 19th July, 2011 the Environment Secretary, Caroline Spelman, announced Government plans to  pilot the culling of badgers in bovine TB hotspot areas - which if successful, would be rolled out to other areas, potentially authorising the shooting of tens of thousands of English badgers.

Not only is this totally inhumane, but the decision flies in the face of scientific evidence which states that culling badgers is NOT an effective method for controlling TB in cattle - and could, quite possibly, even make matters worse.

As you can imagine, numerous animal welfare organisations eg the RSPCA, the Wildlife Trusts and eminent people - such as Sir David Attenborough, are all against this cull, but the badgers desparately need your help too.

Please, please, please sign the newly launched, 38 Degrees Petition against the badger cull (even if you have signed others) and encourage others to do the same.  Then hopefully, together, the weight of public opinion can reverse this outrageous, political decision.

We have Badger set in our woods haven't seen them but hear them at night they are quite safe to as us and the other owners have a non shooting policy in place and that includes our farmer neighbour he says they live and let live

Signed.  The main cause of bovine TB is more likely to be related to modern farming methods and the transport of infected cattle.  There have always been farmers who've tried to cut corners and look for scapegoats, and there are still too many unenlightened farmers around who treat all wild animals and birds as 'vermin' only fit to be shot or trapped.

On the 15th September, the Government published a consultation paper recommending that in order to control the spread of TB in cattle, they should allow groups of farmers or landowners to CULL and/or vaccinate badgers.

If this goes ahead then those issued with a licence will be able to either:
1. Trap badgers in cages and then shoot them
and/or
2.Shoot free-running badgers
or
3. vaccinate badgers

The Badger Trust says:
'Farmers will undoubtedly choose to shoot free running badgers as it is the cheapest method.  However, there is a welfare issue here as some may not be killed outright and will suffer.'

PLEASE, PLEASE, PLEASE, either take time to read the BT's guidance on the DEFRA paper and respond (with horror I hope) to the Government's proposals.  This can be viewed on the Badger Trust's website:
