idea for new cat dish

Noah tends to lick jelly but not if he has pate food or if I mash the chunks. His water bowl is an IKEA soup plate, I would have thought it would be difficult to spill food from that?

Spaniel bowls are deep and have steep sides. Perhaps it doesn't come across too well in the picture I posted but they are designed to keep a spaniel's ears out of the bowl... by default the food can't be scooped over the edge as the walls are too high. So perfect for your problem.

I think it is, although I put one in the dishwasher a couple of years ago and it went out of shape which surprised me.

Dave is a pusher, makes a right mess but he's such a pig that he goes back later and gets any edible bits Chilli on the other hand is an immaculate eater. They have mats underneath so whatever starts to dry out before mr piggy gets to it can just be tipped into the bin.

I was thinking of an aperture far bigger than the biggest cat's head

the only time Trigger doesn't lick his food off the dish is if it is in an opened Petmate, where the lid sticking up stops it - something like the lid only curved more is what I had in mind

I found this 'no mess' dish on eBay. I think the only advantage of this would be that it can't be tipped over.

Great for hedgies, but not sure about cats

With wet food she'll generally pick up a chunk of it in her mouth, carry it away and put it right on the floor before eating it anyway

I would ideally like a Mason Cash type saucer, with the 1inch sides, with a half of it covered with a high dome to allow for a cat's head - at least 6 inches high, I reckon - so whiskers stay outside the dome but the tongue pushes food towards the domed bit

does that make any sense?

I am fed up with removing an immaculately licked bowl to reveal a neat circle of lumps of meat on the floor, dried out so not eaten or edible

Yep, I have really shallow metal dishes and Pepsi pushes all the biscuits over the edge. She never does it with wet food though, but once the kibble goes out of the dish she won't eat it. With wet food she'll generally pick up a chunk of it in her mouth, carry it away and put it right on the floor before eating it anyway

I have a couple of those ones I mainly use for water and some shallower.  I put their food in various dishes but I find that the higher ones do make less mess.

I can't visualise the type of dish you are after but how about a high straight sided ceramic one.
 
This one is a bit plain but I have the same make (Mason cash) bowls in funky colours with fish bones on (they look better than they sound ) and no stray chunks are pushed up by their tongues as the sides are so straight/high.

I would be very wary of a partially covered one, afraid I would view undercover bit as breeding ground for bacteria and dangerous trapping zone for cats paws/faces should an extra tasty mosel get stuck under. Safer a cleanable placemat under dish and cat will eat fallen bits if they are hungry.

I haven't seen one part covered but I have played around with different shaped dishes. The ones I have now seem to work pretty well and food rarely goes on the floor. All they are is Tesco value cereal bowls. They - they are only 65p each as well  - I have about 15 of them.

I tried using ones with higher sides but they just paw the food out onto the floor 

Another dish that caught my eye recently is this Eco one. It is made from Bamboo You use it for 10 years and then bury it.

Yeah, mine always do that Trigger and food is slopped all over 

If I'm around I nudge it back towards them with a fork, they do it less with a high sided dish but never seen any part covered.

Trigger always licks his wet food, be it a gravy or jelly type, until it all gets pushed off the farther edge of the dish

what I need is a dish with a sort of half dome cover, so the food he pushes forward stays in the dish

just wondered if other peeps have the same problem, and/or have ever seen such a dish on the market?
