She's just gorgeous!  :Luv:

I think the difficulty is verification- the Guiness Book of Records is probably very strict on what is accepted and what isn't. The last of my parent's cats Arthur (former stray) must have been at least 24 when he died by process of elimination but we wouldn't have been able to prove it.

I suspect the reason the oldest living cat is younger than we might expect is the difficulty in verifying a cat's age.  Guess work wouldn't be enough - I think you'd have to have proof to be officially the oldest cat.

In the article it says its this cat in Ontario, much younger than Byron............maybe if we search for oldest living cat, thats not the one who has lklived the longest but passed on its the actual current living one.

I am sure I have read about the woman in west wales befor ebut Guinness Book of records were not happy with her info about the cat.

Don't be daft  :evillaugh: I don't think Byron will be the oldest because I've heard of a few cats her age, she is 25 as far as we know - prob 26 now.  We have her vets details only to a point but as far as I know the Rescue had them, they were pretty sure of her age - looking at her I wouldn't argue otherwise.

OK here is thae article that I saw that prompted me to post

http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/wales/south_west/4288399.stm

If I read it correctly the current oldest living cat is in Ontario, Canada and a mere early 20s. Some one in West Wales is trying to take the title but if Janey has proof of her cats age then its time to claim the record  ;D

how do people prove an age unless  it is a pedigree with papers - which is not going to happen as they very rarely live past 20

Easy! - if they've had 'em since they were kittens  :) - my Harry and George are both moggies, but I know exactly when they were born. My Amber (she was a ped persian) was in her mid 20s when I adopted her.

My oldest mog was Elsa who was 20 when she died, I'd had her since she was 6 wks old, I knew the lady who owned Elsa's mum, so knew exactly when she was born too  :Luv: .

My Tibby was 26 when she died in 1986 and I'm sure I remember someone haveing a cat on here older than her.

What's the oldest in GBOR at moment Gill?  I think it was about 31 when I had Tibby

If they have been sen by vets every since they were homed that gives a minimum age or there are photos that can be dated .

I know someone has a very old cat but cant remeber who it was and how old.

I thought Byron was our oldest?

surely some cats' ages must be guestimates though, because they were rescues - how do people prove an age unless  it is a pedigree with papers - which is not going to happen as they very rarely live past 20

Just was reading about the oldest cat in guinness book of records and I am sure someone here has a candidate, if the age can be proved.
