Would the RSPCA be able to issue a court order to get the information? - this could happen again with other cats.  :(

I don't even have her name and address - we are on a oversea student association forum, similar to this one. We only know each other by ID :(

Thats sad she wouldnt help get justice for her cat, im sure it will be noticed when she tries to get the cat out the country when her studies are finished?!

I didn't ask her plan after she finish her study, maybe partly because I didn't want to hear the answer. I just hope she will keep her promise. There are so many students here having pets just for fun and would rehome or even sell them when leaving. It costs a lot of money exporting/importing cats. They don't think their cats deserve it.

Follow up:

The buyer refused to give out the seller's information. At the beginning she just ignored my message. After several attempts she replied that as she was an oversea student in this country she didn't want to be involved in any thing might threaten her safety. Obviously if the seller was questioned or interviewed seller would know it was her.....

I've told her all the possible consequence of declawing and she promised me that, although she's not brave enough to stand out against the seller she would take extra care of the poor little cat to ensure she has a happy life.

Maybe it's best for the cat , if she can keep her promise. But the seller and vet responsible for this just walked away with nothing!!

Mark the cat is only 8 months so too young to have been brought into the UK.

Unless this is a hoax then whoever A) actually declawed the cat i.e the vet and B) assisted with declawing the cat i.e. vet nurse and C) owned the cat have broken the animal welfare law and are all liable to prosecution.  If you know this happened as a genuine fact then you have a responsibilty to report it not only to the RSPCA but also to the Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons and the Police. Declawing is disgusting and any incidence of it happening in any European country, where it is banned unless for a specific medical reason for the cat, has to be stamped on immediately.

This makes me sick, bad enough it is happebning regularly in the USA and Canada, we do not want back door declawing to rear it's ugly head in the UK.

I quite agree. If a vet really has done this, they need to be severely punished (struck off and prosecuted) to set an example to any other potentially unscrupulous vets. It is possible the poor cat was imported from the US but the facts need to be checked and followed up on. Animal cruelty will continue to exist as long as people allow it to.

I'm sure it's true and it's in UK. I'm asking the buyer for more info. I'm not sure if she's willing to cooperate but I've already told her that it's even illegal to keep the cat without reporting it to the police. Hope she'll understand the nature of the case.

If this happened in the UK and you have proof, and not just heresay, then it is illegal and I would suggest contacting the rspca and the rscv.

I don't think so, Horza. It's not like docking a puppy's tail. (And even that goes wrong if not done by a properly trained person) We are talking MAJOR surgery here.... removal of bones and quarterising of blood vessels in a very fiddly area. Without sedation (and access to the correct drugs needed for sedation) you might get one toe off but the cat would be dead through either stress or blood loss before the second.

there is also the danger that the de-clawing wasn't carried out by a vet :(
Cats are like little bundles of razor blades wrapped in soft fur.

Funnily enough I was thinking someone is pulling Miafey's leg.  :innocent: Why pay out for an expensive operation then just give the cat away a week later?  :shify: Surely he would have realised his wife was allergic before he took those steps - assuming he could find a vet who didn't care about being struck off.  :innocent:

People do pull all kinds of stunts to get their cats to jump the queue for a rescue place (or to make their cat attractive to a potential adopter). Usually they come up with the same threats or claims... we'll be getting the emigrating one soon I have no doubt... but this is a different twist. Very worrying.  :shify:

A call to the RSPCA once you have a few more facts isn't going to do any harm.  ;)

This is appalling and the vet should be struck off.......please be careful , this could be a hoax but RSPCA should investigate if true.

Depends on how well you know these people but I'd be tempted to call the RSPCA.  :shy:

I don't know them. But I'll see if I can find him out. The buyer said she saw the ad on a website. I've sent her a msg asking which one.

It is illegal unless there are sound medical reasons for it to be done. The vet responsible should be reported to the RCVS and will hopefully lose their licence to practice >:( - it is barbaric  >:(

In the United Kingdom, declawing was outlawed by the Animal Welfare Act 2006, which explicitly prohibited "interference with the sensitive tissues or bone structure of the animal, otherwise than for the purposes of its medical treatment". Even before the 2006 Act, however, declawing was extremely uncommon, to the extent that most people had never seen a declawed cat. The procedure was considered cruel by almost all British vets, who refused to perform it except on medical grounds. The Guide to Professional Conduct of the Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons stated that declawing was "only acceptable where, in the opinion of the veterinary surgeon, injury to the animal is likely to occur during normal activity. It is not acceptable if carried out for the convenience of the owner ... the removal of claws, particularly those which are weight bearing, to preclude damage to furnishings is not acceptable."

 Declawing in the UK is illegal.

http://www.purrsinourhearts.co.uk/index.php/topic,4827.0.html

Is it illegal or just considered inhumane?
If it's definately illegal then I maybe try and dig the guy out and then report him to animal protection organization.

Also if it's illegal the vet who did this should be punished too

Is declawing cat legal in UK??
« Reply #1 on: January 06, 2010, 21:16:21 PM »
I just heard a story of someone declawed their 8 month cat!
I'm shocked by the fact that this is still happenning in UK. Is it legal at all to do it here?
I'm also very surprised that there is still some vet who was willing to do this.
The owner declawed the cat a week ago and then is giving the cat away because his wife "is allergic to cat"

I've lost my word. I actually heard the story from someone who purchased the poor cat who was kept in a cage and was described very "cute and lovely" but "depressed". The buyer was so ignorant that he thought it was no big deal and let the cat out the cage on her feet again. His girlfriend then asked for help as the cat didn't want to come out of the bottom of the sofa.

What a world!!!
