well hubby bless him deliberately didnt buy flowers with lillies in them on mothers day coz he had heard me saying they were poisonous .. so he bought ones with stemmed orchids

(not sure but i am guessing they are prob toxic aswell)

Lilies are my faves, I love them but I do avoid buying them now we have a clan of three..

I got some in a bouquet from work so I cut the pollen stems out of them and put them somewhere the cats couldnt reach - they arent TOO bad with flowers, they are quite happy with cat grass and leaving the havoc for other parts of the house!

my previous boy Indi was very strange with flowers........won't touch anything in the garden, but as soon as there were flowers in a vase that was it. The funniest thing was coming back home and find a half destroyed vase of carnations........he'd sat there and bitten the stems in haf. Even better was he ran away to "pretend" it wasn't him but forgot to drop the one from his mouth. He was running round with a carnation flower in his teeth

Anyway as soon as we left the room the other half got demolished as well. I guess he just didn't like the colour haha

Think it's right - a lot depends on the cat.

My Lost Boy Flynn loved the garden, and if he liked a plant, inspected it and found it admirable, then he felt it was only polite to eat it as a mark of his appreciation. Ditto indoor plants. (thankfully I've never been a lover of Lillies as the smell always makes me feel a bit queasy for some reason!)

Paddy on the other hand has never bothered. He eats grass, and that's it. He's not even really very impressed by catnip.

it is quite interesting as we all know for a fact indoors only cats have NO sense at all when it comes to cut flowers.

My fraser however had been outdoors in years before i got him, indoors with outdoor run access for past 9 or so years (nothing in the run apart from the odd weed or grass growing through from the lawn outside the run) and he IS stupid when it comes to flowers, well actually non so much the flowers but greenery..he eats FAKE green leaves/grass etc (i have had over the years artificial silk type ones)

I must say all my cats have always been outdoor cats and Fluffy is very big on grass munching-we often find strands hanging from her bottom now that shes too old to realise not everything has come out!! She has never attempted to eat anything apart from grass althoug she has sniffed a few of our garden plants from afar. Id imagine they must have some kind of a sense of whats good for them and what isnt?

WEll, I think all the ones on my street must be sensible Lynn, as I posted we have a minimum of 5 cats on the street, and in previous years it has been higher - last years was 11 for part of the year, plus at least 2 neighbourhood cats that came round, and none were ill.
Sootyca - you do have a good point, and if they were in a separate garden, I wouldnt' dream of it, but I live on an odd street, we are classed as back to backs, so no back door, never mind a garden!! The neighbours lillies are in pots outside the front of the house, so it is a different situation to what you mention - I wouldn't be trespassing, and it wouldnt' look too suspicous as both plants struggled with flowering last year. If the weedkiller smells it wouldnt' be an option, but yet again this year, I have cats having outdoor access that are new, and I Would hate to lose one cos of my neighbours ignorance.

until i joined cat chat i didnt know about lillies, I have however had a few bunches of flowers with lillies etc but i have sucessfully managed to find a spot where you know who cant get to them

Regarding the lillies and other poisonous flowers in gardens, which i am sure must be many I did ask the question before about the thousands of cats that go outside and are exposed to the dangers..Im sure not a huge amount must eat them or we'd see far more poisoning cases than we do so what i asked before was do people think out door cats have more sense or when they have grass etc are they not so inclined to eat the flowers ???

This will probably get me shot down in flames, but quite frankly I am disgusted that you are talking about trespassing on someone elses property and destroying part of their garden. Yes, their attitude is wrong but not everyone loves cats and many gardeners find them very destructive. I wouldn't dream of dictating what someone else has in their garden, whether it is harmful to animals or not. It is their decision. I would certainly make sure my animals wouldn't be able to get out of my garden to have access to them though or keep them inside. And, if someone destroyed something in my garden then I would make sure I replaced it with more of the same plants and I would report it to the police as I would certainly suspect someone had done it deliberately.

My Jeannie too, before she went blind the only place I could have flowers was in the loo. It's a weedkiller, primarily Desley. You can buy it in a trigger spray in most garden centres, or from Wilkinsons if you have one near you. One of the reasons it's popular is because you can easily confine its use - say if you had a ~~Lily~~ - er I mean Bindweed, which was near another plant you wanted t keep, you could spray some on a sponge, and work it over the ~~plant~~ weed without damaging any other plant. Then you dispose of the sponge safely (stick it in a sealed plastic bag in the bin) and wait a day or so.......

Glyphosate. Apply to stems and leaves. Won't kill any of the surrounding plants as long as it doesn't touch them. It's systemic, so works on the whole plant. Not that I'm suggesting anything........

How rude of them to say that Des, that they know they could harm the cats but still done nothing, I would be out with the hedge trimmer. I would be tempted for them to go to a funeral. The plants that is.

I shall be saying something to my neighbours yet again this year - he has two outside lillies, and I didn't know when I first moved about them - when they asked me last year what I thought of them, I told them that I dont care how nice they are, they could kill one of our cats - and both just said 'I know' - so will say it again this year, but might try and think of a way to kill both plants before they start flowering!! Oddly enough, we have had a minimum of 5 cats plus the odd visitor every year since I moved here 5 years ago, and more most years, yet none have been ill.

Sound advice indeed, it is surprising how many people in spite of all the publicity are still not aware of this.

A few weeks ago we were doing cat care and went into the home on the first morning and there on the dining table was a huge bunch of lilies and the pollen was all over the table and on the floor, I nearly died on the spot. The owner of the cats is a nursing Sister who also nearly dropped bow legged when advised her of the problem. There will certainly be no more lilies in her house.
