Max was always fine with one tray, but Poot is a bit different and seems to like different trays for poos and wees, so we now have 2.

One hooded corner tray in the hall cupboard, shared by two small cats. It's a one bedroom flat, so they don't have far to go.

The hooded corner tray was the same style they had in their birth home, shared between 5 kittens, so I guess they reckon having one between just the two of them is luxury!

I would be able to squeeze another tray in if need be, but it would probably have to be in the bedroom, so I'm grateful the chaps are happy to share. As Suzanne says, once you add one there's no going back.

I found another "litter tray" just now

We have a captain's chest up against the fireplace in the kitchen and Willow cheerfully jumped behind there and peed on a soft toy that had fallen behind

4 cats and 2 large open litter trays.

The only problem we’ve ever had is Penguin so at night I move one of the trays into the kitchen (so it blocks the cabinet under the sink as Smoke is going through an open everything phase) and then it comes back upstairs during the day and so far this has worked.

It gets sifted every morning and I’ve not decided yet if we go through one or two bags of OKO a month yet.

I have 2 trays for 2 cats.
Mogs tray on the right and Ambers on the left. Mogs will wee on the floor if I move her tray rather than use Ambers, Amber on the other hand uses Mogs tray unless Mogs has just used it. They pooh in their own trays but both wee in the same tray most of the time and dont bother if I switch the trays around makes me think its habbit rather than preference.

1 very large tray for 2 cats. I am considering adding a second, but the only place it can go is in the bathroom, and I will have to move the airer and can't think where that will go. So I'm stalling as I know once I add it there will be no going back. If I had a larger property, I'd def have another tray too. But as I'm in a one bed flat, they are never far from the tray.

2 trays for 4 cats currently, although i have had 1 per cat plus one extra in the past. Molly and Zia share a largish covered litter tray - it is scooped 3 times a day though because they share. Sam and Kizzy share one purely because Sam rarely uses the tray, he prefers to go outside these days - Kizzy will use the tray even when the door is open for her to go outside. Kizzy is quite fussy with the tray though, am just changing them to clumping litter to see if she is happier with that. Theirs is an open one that is scooped when there is a poo in it, until I put the clumping in, then that will be 3 times a day too.

For 11 cats:

5 trays indoors (4 downstairs in a walk in cupboard & 1 upstairs)

3 trays in the garage (which they have access to anytime)

2 trays in the garden (large shallow terracotta pots filled with sharp sand)

All indoor trays are large open ones.

Mine all have access to garden all the time too.

2 trays for 2 indoor cats, 1 in the living room which is the one they normally use and 1 in the bathroom which they sometimes use. They don't worry about sharing the trays and both make use of both trays. I did have 3 to start with when I first got Hobbes but they only ever used the same 2 so got rid of it.

I have 2 trays and 2 cats although 1 is an 11 week old kitten. 1 tray is in the bathroom and the other in the kitchen. Magnum is outside most of the time.They do share the trays depending on where they are in the house.

6 cats, all indoor/outdoor altho 2 of them (the 2 nine month olds) restricted indoors overnight = 3 trays (2 large and 1 jumbo)

Thinking of putting 1 more in front room as we having an on and off peeing and occassionally pooing problem in bathroom (not to mention Millie's current peeing on clothes problem totally unconnected with number of trays

Fortunately i dont need 9 trays as my lot are close and dont mind sharing but i would if i were mean enough to keep cats together that werent happy. The 1 per cat +1 is for all 'essential' facilities, feeding areas, hidey holes, trays etc its a behaviourists way of helping out upset/agitated cats and the same theory we used when putting out haynets for horses, this way even those at the bottom of the pecking order dont miss out

Only 1 for 1. Lexy is quite happy to do piddlepoop at the same time. I thought that if you were introducing more cats or if there were toilet problems you'd have 1 per cat plus only 1 more so if you have 5 trays and 5 cats you'd have a 6th tray only. Have to say it hasn't made sense to me, but then again I have only ever had one cat at a time in adulthood and childhood cats used the garden.

Here at the Clan Cats we have 24 litter trays - we have hooded., we have open trays, we have high sided trays and use wood pellets, paper litter and clumping - the paper is for a feral cause she won't use anything else - thankyou Storm your litter is more per bag but does last an awfully long time as none of the others use it!

We also have Minmin the raggie she uses the Bidet or bath, Jester is also another bath user - it is the cats bathroom so not so bad!

The majority are on the side our house cats use through the day - we have 2 in the toilet, one in the diningroom and one in the kitchen for the cats who still after several years of happy outside privilages still come in to use the box!

I have one hooded litter tray upstairs for my own cats to use overnight in case they get caught short. They all prefer to go out into the garden during the day, and will use it only if absolutely necessary. I have to change the litter once it has been used else Freddie shows his disgust by weeing on the bathmat instead!

I have one per pen for fosters who are confined overnight or when the door is open. These get changed daily as there may be 2 or 3 kittens using them at a time.

my two thoroughly domesticated cats, who were trained to use a litter tray from the very beginning, now use the dirt holes in the patio, whatever the weather

whilst semi-feral Tosker always uses the litter tray in the kitchen ,even to the extent of climbing into the enclosure just to use it

beats me what goes on in their furry little brains

Pepper used to poo on Lauren's floor she thought maybe he was used to going outside to go, poor boy fell off the balcony on his way down the fire stairs to go out at his old home

Lauren got him using the tray before he came here though but I've noticed he prefers to go outside to go to loo.

I have always had 1 for 2 and never had a problem sharing.

Thats the point in this poll.......Macey has started pooping in the garden and beside the tray, even when its just been cleaned

So am getting one for the garden

Ted has always pooped on the kitchen floor even when I only had him and his sister and only one tray. He continues to poo on the floor to this day

I know the rule is one tray per cat plus one but...how many litter trays do you actually have, and how many cats are they for?

And be honest

I currently have 3 for 7 cats but am getting more today

I also dont believe having one tray per cat plus one is needed or possible in some homes

Well not if you have more than 2 cats
