I got some sardines in spring water from Sainsbury's today - love the retro-style tins! I drained off the spring water and gave them to the cats. Both of the LOVED what I had brought home and are now curled up on the sofa with me, gazing at me appreciatively! Of course, I may have to buy more sardines in order to keep this behaviour up, lol!

I always pour it down the sink as I thought it had most of the salt in? - I checked the springwate version against the brine one and the salt content is about the same.

I give Capone tuna in spring water. He loves lapping up the spring water first, then tuck in on the tuna.

I think the cats and I might be having sardines for tea, now.

The bones are fine for them as they are crumbly. They are a good source of omega 3 - not sure about 6 though  :evillaugh:

I love chargrilled sardines but haven't tasted the timmed ones. I don't think I would like them. They have about 8 varieties in Sainsbury's

I didn't realise you could feed them sardines! The fluffies are in for a treat when I visit Sainsbury's on Saturday! :)

Is there a risk of them choking on the bones though? Do you guys remove them or leave them in?

Both my two love sardines or pilchards in tomato sauce.. Its a treat i give them every now again. i buy the 40p small cans,so they use them up in a day

I'm sure I've read somewhere that tinned sardines are good for cats, because the bones are eaten as well as the flesh

I would have thought olive oil would be good for the coat too

I stocked up today on the Sardines in Springwater - it was less than I thought - 34p a can and Alice gets 2 days worth from a can  ;D

I remember that Mary. Also, Sharn who runs a cattery had a cat that would only eat them and lived well into his 20s as well.

I checked in Tesco and they don't have them in spring water, only tomato sauce, sunflower oil or brine. tbh, even the spring water one has salt added so a bit of a gimmick really. I got Alice one in brine to try and she wolfed it. I compared the salt content with red salmon and the sardines are slightly lower  :) Tesco tins are 42p or 3 for £1. They might have a spring water version in John West or Princes but they are about 80p for a small tin.

Probably but Sainsbury's have always had a huge selection of Sardines for some reason  :Crazy:. I like the fact that the ones in spring water are low sodium - about 1/10th of pilchards in brine.

Mine absolutely love Pilchards in Tomato sauce,  prefer them over prawns or tuna.

I was in sainsbury's yesterday and wondered if there is something that Alice will like but not £3 for a small can (red salmon) I looked at pilchards in brine but the salt was high. Then I saw their own brand Sardines in Spring water - 42p a can. She loves them and they are really low salt  :)
