I do all mine by wrapping them up in a blanket like a baby so they feel secure, then get one paw out at a time & there is less of a struggle. Done my neighbours cat like this too.

I feel safer using cat scissors than nail clippers.

Hope you get to do it catalyst.

I would definitely get them cut and get the vet to do it - they are experienced in dealing with difficult animals so will know the best way to do it.

I know with Ollie (he absolutely detests vets) he was hissing/spitting and swiping at them but they finally managed to get them cut.   However, I have now learnt to do it myself which he allows me to do no problem at all.    I slowly slide up to him while he's sleeping on my bed and do one paw at a time - it might take a few days to get them all.

I do it by stealth one claw at a time while they are napping  :evillaugh:  It takes ages but it gets it done in the least complicated way!

I do all my guys, even Bunty who hates being picked up, I just do her 1 paw at a time, pick her up scoup her under my arm and take 1 paw at a time with 1 hand and use small human nail clippers on her claws.    Doing it 1 paw at a time with her doesn't seem to stress her out.  It takes practise and you have to be comfident doing it but it can be done - saying that though my hubby always chickens out so its always me!

Get your vet to show you how to do it - you might find it's easier to do than you think.  I do Jaffa and Mosi's (front paws - can't do back ones as I have only 2 hands!).  I just sit them on the floor facing away from me and wedged between my knees.  I reach around him (so that my arms hold him in place too) and hold the paw with one hand and clip with the other.  They don't like it but restrict their complaining to the vocal variety and it gets done pretty quickly.  Claws can grow very quickly so it's handy to be able to do it yourself and not have to go to the vet every time.

Can only confirm what MM and Mary have said about behaviour at vets being so very different than at home.  Billy Whiz (named that for very good reason  ;) ) is exactly as you describe Milo about being held (I can't pick him up) but had claws on all 4 paws done when he 1st arrived as I was so worried about fights if the puds didn't get on (Tom was elderly).  The vet was very quick and did it single handed. You really could've knocked me down with a feather   VN also manages to give him worming pills with no trouble.

On the other hand sweet, adorable, cuddly Noni won't let VN give her worming pill.  Go figure.  Actually I think I might try it now. Ha!  :yayyy: I just woke her up and did it. Am a bit shakey now though  :evillaugh: :evillaugh:

It's not nice him catching his claws on carpet. I'd bring him to vet and see how it goes  :)

Best get them done hunnie as if they are getting caught in the carpet you don't want one getting really caught and getting torn off.

Cats often behave better at the vets especially if the owner isnt there! They couldnt 'hold him down' because it would make his feet inaccessible. If they are getting long its better to get them sorted before they become a proper issue, it would take longer to sort them then.

Yes im perfectly aware that they wont 'hold him down' They will most likely put him in a towel and get one paw out at a time! I just thought it would take longer to say that than 'hold him down'!!

I was scared to cut Bonnie's claws but I got the toe nail clippers and I was stroking her on the bed and giving her belly rubs and just snipped away without her feeling a thing.  Maybe I'm luckier than you.  They always let vets do lots of things they wouldn't let us do - but then again they know they can just get away with murder with us

Good luck.

Milos claws are getting so long that htey catch the carpet. There is no way that i could get near enough to him to clip them. I would need to take him to the vets. Thing is it would freak him out completely to be held down and have them clipped. He doesnt like being held. Should i still get htem done? None of them are growing inwards and he isnt being effected by them.
