Many thanks for your advice everyone!  Kitty is still a little poorly but is now back home and eating on her own so it looks as if she's on the road to recovery  :wow:

This has happened a couple of times to me with my fosters. It is from the endotracheal tube that they use to keep the trachea open during the op. I have syringe fed with A/D made sloppy with water, to get fluids and food down little throats, then progressed onto feeding from a bowl and then made the food gradually thicker and then progressed onto mashed up cat food and took it from there.

AB's can be crushed and popped into the syringe at feed times, check with vet first that you have the type of AB's that you can do that with.

It usually resolves itself with treatment in about a week to 10 days, not a lot to worry about but it is frightening when you first see it.

Hope she gets better soon.

Im glad shes been admitted, at least they can get pain relief and abs into her IV, these should act quickly and hopefully sort her out. x rays are wise choice, it could just be coincidence and she has managed to eat something she shouldnt have.

Insurance doesnt cover the cost of neutering so probably wouldnt cover anything resulting from that?

Can't me much help, but one of my kitties was very ill for a week! The whole week she refused to eat and I had to force water down her, coz drinking she would  neither. She just spent a whole week on the same chair being so poorly. It was the first time I experienced a cat being that sick after neutering.

this is a sad situation - and shows how important insurance is, so that if there is a dispute with the veterinary care the insurance company can deal with it

this sort of thing is going to put some owners off having their kittens and cats spayed :scared:

I would say if it is an infection and it was caused by a tube at the vets, the least they could do is treat the poor kitten for free. I accept that accidents happen but they shouldn't be charging to rectify.

I hope the poor kitten gets sorted.

Thanks Gill - it seems that kitty is still very poorly and has been taken back to the vets who have admitted her for fluids & observation.  They have said that they want to take x-rays even though they are sure it's an infection not a blockage, and her owner is a bit worried about the necessity (not to mention the cost) of thiis.  Anyone else got any more suggestions?  :thanks:

This does not sound very good at all and she should have got advice from the vets about giving the meds.....I assume they are not open at all at the weekend?

I know Desley is quite an expert using metacam, which is a painkiller but have no idea how you get the abs into her if she has a throat infection.....I would have thought abs injections would be better and although convenia may not be the right one to use there are others that can be administered and last 48 hours.

I think I would be back onto the vets and tell them that she needs abs injections cos that way the meds will stay in her too.

She may want to see another vet!

Posted on behalf of someone I know...I have sent her the link to this thread so she can read any suggestions you may have...

------------------

My little kitty was spayed on Friday of last week, then on Tuesday night, she'd been scratching the carpet, and started wretching and coughing in the middle of the night, so I put 2 and 2 together and though she'd swallowed some carpet fluff, had a look in her mouth, nothing there, so let her carry on as normal as she was ok and eating and drinking fine.

Wednesday night, she stopped eating, despite being offered salmon and cat milk, she looked like she wanted to eat/drink but something was stopping her (the carpet fluff)

Took her to the vets yesterday, and he thinks it may be a throat infection from when the tube went her mouth during the spay and she had a high temp. He gave her an anti-inflamatary and some metacam...

Went back today and he checked her over and gave us 2 lots of meds to try her on over the weekend (synulox and metacam)

How do we get her to take the meds? she's still not eating a great deal and sicks up everything she has eaten since last night (we told the vet about this) also, is it common for this to happen after a neuter?

I'm really worried about my poor kitty, she's still up and walking about as normal but the coughing and sickness is really worrying as well as her not eating much.

------------------------

Can anyone offer any advice or suggestions please?  Many thanks.
