Can I disagree
I have a cat that I got as rehomed Raggie, in her first house with us she was an indoor cat. BUT she would pace between the doors and scratch at them, so when we moved we are now in a house with a wood next door. She loves it she hunts all day and is much happier. If some thing ever did happen to her (GFB) I know she has had a happy life doing what cats should do.
Now back to your question:
When I first let her out I did not give her that meal, so she was hungry and I went with her, for 1st week only wanted to go in the back garden, and then she got brave and just kept an eye on her. She is micro chipped and weres a ID collar, if ever she ends up somewhere she should not be. But she does not go very far I think!
Letting them go out brings a lot of heart ache, only this week my other cat spent 10 hours up a tree after a dog chased him, my other cat went missing for 24 hours and we found 2 doors away in there house. You do get to know your neighbours. When they are ooy I am always lisening on the look out for them just to check they are safe.
Hope this helps only you can decide knowing your area you live and yoyrs cats personality.
