Absolutely!!  - If its good enough for T. S Eliot

The Ad-dressing of Cats

You've read of several kinds of Cat,
And my opinion now is that
 You should need no interpreter
 to understand their character.
You now have learned enough to see
That Cats are much like you and me
And other people whome we find
Possessed of various types of mind.
For some are sane and some are mad
And some are good and some are bad
And some are better, some are worse -
But all may be described in verse.
You've seen them both at work and games,
And learnt about their proper names,
 Their habits and their habitat:
 But
How would you ad-dress a Cat?

So first, your memory I'll jog,
And say: A CAT IS NOT A DOG.

 Now Dogs pretend they like to fight;
 They often bark, more seldom bite;
But yet a Dog is, on the whole,
What you would call a simple soul.
Of course I'm not including Pekes,
 And such fantastic canine freaks.
The usual Dog about the Town
Is much inclined to play the clown,
And far from showing too much pride
 Is frequently undignified.
He's very easily taken in -
Just chuck him underneath the chin
Or slap his back or shake his paw,
And he will gambol and guffaw.
 He's such an easy-going lout,
He'll answer any hail or shout.

Again I must remind you that
 A Dog's a Dog - A CAT'S A CAT.

With Cats, some say, one rule is true:
Don't speak till you are spoken to.
Myself, I do not hold with that -
 I say, you should ad-dress a Cat.
But always keep in mind that he
 Resents familiarity.
I bow, and taking off my hat,
Ad-dress him in this form: O CAT!
But if he is the Cat next door,
Whom I have often met before
(He comes to see me in my flat)
I greet him with an OOPSA CAT!
I've heard them call him James Buz-James -
But we've not got so far as names.
 Before a Cat will condescend
To treat you as a trusted friend,
 Some little token of esteem
 Is needed, like a dish of cream;
And you might now and then supply
 Some caviare, or Strassburg Pie,
Some potted grouse, or salmon paste -
He's sure to have his personal taste.
(I know a Cat, who makes a habit
Of eating nothing else but rabbit,
And when he's finished, licks his paws
So's not to waste the onion sauce.)
 A Cat's entitled to expect
 These evidences of respect.
And so in time you reach your aim,
And finally call him by his NAME.

So this is this, and that is that:
 And there's how you AD-DRESS A CAT.

I suspect that the reason so few of my computer dates went past one meeting was because I would turn aside as they were in full stream talking about themselves and address a passing dog, cat or horse, then have to apologise and ask them to repeat themselves - I just find animals must be personally addressed - you can't just walk up and pat them, and you can't walk past and ignore them - I mean, it would be rude! wouldn't it?

I cant walk up the road without being recognised by half the cats in the neighbourhood.  People knock at my door with a cat in their arms and say "Is this one of yours"  and mine dont go out any more ......

The lady across the road from me has developed that kind of resignation with me too. She lets her cat out; which I have no problem with, mine are outdoor/indoor too. But she doesn't have a cat flap which I feel is necessary, especially in this weather.

I see her cat sat on the bin next to her door crying to get in and it makes me so sad. I usually pop across with a handful of cat biscuits for him. She does always check if he wants letting in before she goes to bed as far as I can tell. It's quite funny, because he knows me now and when he hears our door open he runs across for a fuss!

I think I will have a recce about 10.00 pm and if there is still no-one in, I will leave a cardboard box with an old towel in it for her.  Have a spare litter tray, too, if it comes to that .  I dont think her owners would be upset - they already know me as a "mad cat lady" so  wouldnt be that surprised  :briggin:

Maybe you could put a cheap bed and litter tray etc in the stairwell and say it's for yours. (If they don't go out say it's on the off chance they manage to sneak past you. ;))

Just went to put out a milkbottle (no milkman today - poor chap couldnt get around on ungritted roads) and found little Suzie!!  In she trotted, casual a anything and helped herself to the remains of Mr T's supper.  Poor chap had no doubt intended to finish it later.  Then she had a little drink and a stroll round.  At this point Mr T spotted her and used some rather ungentlemanly language.  Ive just taken her home, but no-one is in  :(  I hope they come back tonight or Im not going to know what to do - I dont like the thought of another little cat spending the night in the stairwell with no heating and no bed (and no litter tray!!)  But she isnt my cat ..... Oh, dear ...  :(

We live at the top of a block of flats (3rd floor) so we dont tend to have cats on the doorstep too often but .... when we went to put out the empty milk bottle there on the doorstep was a little kitty!

She actually lives downstairs, and has moved in in the last couple of months.  Her name is Suzie and she is a tiny, dark tortie.  Very cute!!  She has taken to running to greet us if she is about, and usually has a big fuss made of her.  I dont know if she had come to find us, or it was just a chance encounter while she explored.

We left the front door open and she came in to explore.  She went into the bdroom (Mr T was asleep on the bed and they didnt notice eachother) and needless to say she visited the kitchen and discovered the remains of our two's breaksfast - she had a good sniff but didnt eat anything.

Unfortunately, at this point, a door banged downstairs and she ran off.

I keep peeping through the spyhole in the door to see if she comes back - I wonder what Mr T and Chloe will think?  :briggin:
