BB's Kitten - Petal update.

great to hear that little Petal is doing much better!  I agree with the others comments on Iams we avoid it completely.

Good luck for finding better food, Iams really isn't great quality and is expensive for what it is. I dont budget for cat food, just buy them what I feel like - spent £60 at Zooplus on Fri!!

Morning,

Everything is still going really well with Petal, she's escaped out of the bathroom several times and not happy at being put back in.
She's on a small serving of Iams with a bit of chicken at the moment without any problems  . I'll be going to P@H today to see what selection of food I can get for her.

Petal loves playing with a spider I brought her and she's often found sat on top of the radiator, so I'll be looking at getting one of those radiator bed things for her .

I've not thought of a budget for her food, I get Mischief 48 pouches of whiskas and 2-3 boxes of biccys a month (I still feed him 3-4 times a day as he's only 4 mths) so thats about £15 on him.

I find that whiskas fullstop is too rich for many and stick to felix, even then they often end up on adult pouches as the kitten is just too rich 

What price range are you looking to fit the new food into?

My vet tends to recommend the Royal Canin Sensitivity, but the Whiskas kitten supermeat is quite bland - the pouches can be too rich though

She is a bit better again today and had a soft kitten poo and not a splat 

Still on the fish and chicken for now.
Thanks for the info re. Iams, will look for an alternative tummy kind wet food.

Fingers crossed for her, but I would reconsider an IAms diet, it isn't the best quality food out there, you can get much better foods for your money. With her poor start, wet food will be a big help to her, and I would use something like James Wellbeloved as a dry, as it is hypoallergenic.

I agree re Iams. Apart from the animal experiments issues, I have also heard that a lot of vets think it causes crystals. When I took Willow off it about 4 years ago, she stopped being sick so much. Also whatever they put in it used to stain the carpet whereas other foods don't stain. I am not convinced it is a good diet.

Personally if she is happy eating what she has at present I would not change her food until she is older and settled.

If you do decide to change her food please do so very slowly, so you do not upset her stomach.

I have four cats and they did not like James Wellbeloved biscuits when needed to buy some in an emergency as the ones I use are a better quality and a lot more expensive.............sigh

Petal had one poo during the night  slight shape to it 
She likes her fish and she is having some chicken for lunch .
She's got a lovely little purr when stroked  . A real friendly sweetheart

my oh handreared a feral kitten he found - the vet estimated 3 to 4 weeks old, he lived until he was 15 without any problems - he had cat flu when we picked him up so got runny eyes sometimes if it was cold but that was it - sounds like you are doing your best for petal now

I think Petal is a wonderful name. Mark's spot on, her beginning may have been rocky but she has you in her life now.  hoping the diet helps her feel back to normal soon.

One of my kittens was 4 weeks old when I got him, I was told he was 9  The vet confirmed this and I had to ween him myself, now he is not a very well kitty I think it maybe because he was taken away from his mother too young

Well said burstingbug - you can't change her past but you can give her a great future

Petal had her vet visit today as she is still unwell and all is not as it seems regarding her age 
The vet said that at best she was only 7 weeks if that small and thin.
She is being wormed again, had an antibiotic injection and is on Pro-Kolin+ to see if her tummy settles. On a diet of white fish and chicken for a few days then will be put on an Iams kitten diet. If she doesn't look any better by Weds, then I'm to take her in again.

I contacted the lady I got her from and she said that the new owners of the other kittens had been to the vet today and they were also told that the kitten must be younger than what was first thought.
She just told us the age she believed they were from the information the former owners gave her. She admits this is a big learning curve for her as it was the first set of kittens she has taken in.


Anyway, don't want to dwell on the rights and wrongs, whats in the past is in the past. Just want to look at the present and sort out Petal to give her a long bright happy future
