I can't see why he has a problem!  I am currently looking after two cats who were put out at night by their previous owner "because that's what cats do".  But they stayed in the garden and were always waiting to be let back in first thing on a morning.

They obviously have been kept in here but are not bothered in the slightest about going out.  There has been no crying or standing by the back door trying to get out.  They are happy to be snuggled up here!  Makes me feel from her comments about always waiting to be let back in and what I've seen here that they don't particularly like the outside and really would have preferred to be kept in at their previous home.

Cats, like people, have preferences. I'm a bit of a homebody and love sitting in on a Saturday night with a glass of wine and trashy TV, other people my age are out clubbing three nights a week.

Chilli was/is an outdoorsy cat and as such my heart was in my mouth everytime she decided to stay out overnight. She is now officially missing. Dave on the other hand will go ontop the balcony but keeps coming back in every couple of minutes and gets fed up with being out there very quickly. I live in a very small flat but it is his choice to spend his time indoors with me rather than outside.

As long as there are no weight issues relating to lack of exercise I think the cat should be allowed to do what it pleases! If she doesn't like wandering and playing out then that's her choice, to force her to behave another way will only serve to make a happy cat an unhappy one.

I agree with everything that has been said. My cats are predominantly indoor and get plenty of exercise running up and down that stairs and jumping on everything. I let them out when the weather is ok and it isn't dark but they don't go far and are normally back in about half an hour later. Its nothing to be worried about at all, more of a blessing I'd say!

Pushka, many of us on the forum have indoor cats by our choice... and our cats are balanced and healthy so you don't need to worry about the excercise, as long as she is alert and active you are fine

you don't know what a horrible life she may have had before - who can blame her for staying in!

he always comes out with things like, "out of 24hours shes only been out for 30mins" and "she needs the exercise"

is there anything wrong with this. she walks about the house plenty and is always running up and down the stairs.

Mine love sitting in the garden when it's warm but stay inside most of the time in the winter. I'm much happier knowing where they are. Cats that go walkabout have a much shorter life expectancy for reasons given earlier.

What is your brother expecting her to do ... trot to the shops and do the shopping or bring home something for tea maybe!  ;)  Why does he want her to "go off" ... very strange.

My two girls cease  showing any interest in going outside as soon as it starts to get cold and damp ... basically from October to about March they only leave the house for about 10 mins totall    They much prefer staying indoors inthe warm and dry thank you very much!.  Zephyr ... being an adventerous boy ... has to go out  whatever the weather just to patrol his patch .  Of course if it's really cold nd wet even he won't bother.

I think Indy summed it up perfectly... I'd be happy your little lady wants to stay close to home .. it shows she is happy with you.

My brother moans the exact same thing to me, our childhood cat was very a outdoors type and only really came home to eat but the current lot are very homely and prefer to be indoors mooching than outside, for the reasons already given im relieved my lot dont go far  ;D

Ignore your brother, he will soon find something else to whinge about  ;)

Nor could I.  Blip doesn't wander far either - you have the best of both worlds in that Pushka can enjoy the great outdoors in safety.

It doesn't sound like there's anything wrong... you just have a bit of a homebody... which has many advantages!

with her staying close it is very unlikely that Pushka will:
get hit by a car
get lost
get in a fight
get picked up by other people

but she still has the choice of being outside

Couldnt have put it any better !

well,
Pushka is an adopted cat and we don't really know much about her past.
but she never really likes going outside and even when she is outside
she stays close to the house and sleeps up the back of the garden or outside the front under a bush.

she used to go over the neighbours garden but its a rented house and someone moved in with dogs(they've left now) but she never goes over there now.
but the other side is a dog free zone but she very rarely goes over there as well.
i don't really mind her staying close but my brother is always moaning about her never going out or never going far.

is there a reason she does this? it does get a bit frustrating some times wondering why she wont go.
