well the vets went well on Tuesday! I was hoping to be told that he could come out of the cage but unfortunately not

the vet was pleased with his progress though and does not need to see him again!! He said that another 2 weeks in the cage should do the trick but i can now take him out when we are home and put him on the bed/sofa/lap for strokes and some fuss! Just have to make sure that he is in the cage when there is noone with him and when we are asleep! Have absolutely loved being able to sit with him in bed and on the sofa! He has loved it too!!

Not long to go now! He is not allowed outside for another 2 weeks after cage release date but at least he will be able to stroll around!!

Sorry had internet issues so not been on for a while! Michelle in answer to your question (prob don't need it anymore) but Freddie could not or did not want to move because of the pain really and even now i doubt he would jump on anything...how is she??

Freddie is still on the mend! He is due back at the vet on the 30th! The little beauty escaped from his cage last night! I looked down by me bed and there he was!! He had walked across my room and looked suspiciously like he was going to attempt to jump on the bed

I picked him up and put him on the bed where he lay straight down and demanded love so we spent a glorious hour today! He was purring more than ever, it was lovely and he looked so happy! I really dodn't want to put him back but as the OH says it is better for him and i have to be strict! Horrid though!!

Hi Lisa,

How mobile is freddie with his fracture ?

My vet want to xray Lulu tomorrow as he thinks she might have cracked her pelvis
She is walking around and even jumps on things now so just wondered what Freddie is like

Aw that is great! I'm glad that Freddie is improving so much. It's wonderful that he is eating on his own now too. It's just a matter of healing time now before he is back to his old self. You did a wonderful job caring for him.

Ah thanks everyone for all you kind wishes, it is helping me and freddie a lot!

He is back at home now and the vet wants to see him again in 2 weeks so that is good news! He is very pleased with him and the xrays show no spinal damage and that the fractures have not seperated very much so all should be well! Only worry for me was the piece of bone which had snapped off but he was not worried at all and as a specialist he knows best i guess

He was not very happy that the original vet only took one x ray as he could not see the spine or assess if there were any internal injuries! The xrays yesterday show no internal damage and no bruising either which is amazing all things considered!

Freddie woke me up at 12.45 this morning so i am

but it was to the sound of him finishing off his food and having a drink so no complaining from me!! He sat up this morning for some strokes and seemed ok, no crying. The vet said that he is confident of a full recovery, may get a bit stiff in the cold but no other problems and should be able to jump on the bed etc so that is great!

His brother did come in the room last night under strict supervision from me and my sister and he was fine...only interest was trying to get into the cage to eat Freddies food! Typical! Only let him in for about 10 minutes and then seperated them again and i have made sure that he cannot get into the room when noone is there!

Hope he is ok on his own today! I am going home at lunchtime to check! Think i may get some paper based litter as well and see how he gets on with that as opposed to grit!

This sounds like some good news and agree with what Val said.

He will smell different to your other cat at the moment cos of all the vet visits but once he has been settled at home for a while this will wear off and prob both of them will be back to normal with each other.

Your other cat prob thinks its a new cat cos he smells different and is in a cage.

Oh that is fantastic! I bet you are thrilled to finally know that an operation will not be necessary? I would not let your other cat into the same room just yet. You don't want them to interact at this point, especially if they are used to playing rough house together. Freddie needs to be quite and still and just rest undisturbed, and showered with love and attention from you.

You have done a wonderful job caring for him, so give yourself a hug too.

Keep the updates coming. I will kept my fingers crossed that Freddie recovers quickly. Did the vet say he should recover fully?

Well we have been to the specialist and fingers crossed there is no need for an op

The vet has kept him in to run a couple more xrays as he wants to check him out from all angles but all being well i should be able to pick him up tonight and get him home for 3 weeks of cage rest!! I am sure that in a few days that will drive him

!!!

I also spoke to the vet about having the litter tray in or out and he said that there was no reason not to put it in so i will pop it back in later and also speak to him about whether ti have grit or paper based litter as the latter may be more comfortable if he does collappse into it?!?! Think i may be going neurotic!!

Vet also said that as long as he is eating and drinking his bowels should start to work normally soon! Hoping while he is at the vets!!!

Just intergrating his brother back in that may be a problem now! They have seen each other but Nige just hissed and ran off! He has been poking his head round the door to see him as well! Hopefuly they will be fine but ,ay leave it for a bit!!

Oh what wonderful news to hear that Freddie had a good night newmum! You are doing such a wonderful job in caring for him. They really are just like having a baby to care for. I'm so thrilled at how positive you sound too, that certainly makes his healing go better. If you are feeling to stressful, then your Freddie will pick up on that. He is relying on you more than you know. He now feels safe with your calmness.

Yes, just one more day and night and soon you will have him to the vet who can help him. I pray all will be well and soon Freddie will be back in his true cat form.

I'm keeping everything crossed here for a speedy recovery.

So pleased he has eaten and maybe when you can get to a vet tomorrow , you could get him a tin of hills AD diet which is very full of good things for convalescing cats and ill cats. It smells very strong and apparently tastes nice too. It can be watered down with water and syringe fed but cats also love to lick it off fingers. Always good to have a tin in the cupboard for emergencies.

I do hope that things go well with the specialist and Freddie returns to full health quickly

thanks all for your advice and help. Freddie was quite comfortable last night and although he would not eat he did not seem in pain and drank alot of water which made me feel a bit better.

This morning i tried him again with hand feeding him some whiskas oh so meaty pieces (a real treat for him as he is used to morrisons own!)! To my great relief he started eating!! He ate about a quarter of a pouch from my hand feeding and then didn't want anymore. he had a long drink too and then was really good when we have him the metacam (thanks for the tip on how to get the syringe into his mouth and get him to drink the medicine that really helped). I put the food back in again about an hour later and he has had some more, some from hand and some from his bowl on his own and he has had another long drink. We have had lots of purrs from him today when we have been stroking him and he seems alert and quite happy really all things considered!

I have put the litter tray back in and am just making sure i remove it at night in case slips into it and can't move out. He had a couple of wees yesterday but nothing today yet and no poops but i suppose if he has only just eaten it will take time. we have tried picking him up to see if that helps as advised by the vet as apparently that is when he went at the vets when they were moving him from box to box but nothing yet. I am not too worried as he has been a couple of times and is eating and drinking.

Just got to get through today and tonight and see what happens tomorrow. Thank you so much for all your support and help, i have really appreciated it.

I will let you know how he goes tomorrow but whether he needs the op or not i am feeling a lot more positive and i know that my boy wil be fine in the end. Thanks again and michelle i hope you furball is recovering after their accident xx

Oh hun so sorry to hear about Freddie. I can't offer any advice as I've never been in this situation but you seem to be getting lots of support and wise words from the others who have been through this. I can only begin to imagine how stressful it is for you and your OH. If you are at all worried about Freddie don't hesitate to ring your vet (remember YOU pay the bill and Freddie is YOUR furbabe so you are entitled to ask as many questions as you want).

Oh I am so glad that you thought of using a baking sheet. Great idea! Yes I think it would also be a good idea to take it back out and put it back in as needed. I think you should put his bed down low for him to be able to maneuver his body into it. Please do try the tuna by hand feeding him as suggested by furbabystar (Michelle) and myself. I think this would be the best and easiest way for Freddie to eat. You could even mash it up with some water too and make it like a pate. He is going to need his Metacam just to stay some what comfortable.

You are doing a fantastic job taking good care of him. You should pat yourself on the back as I know how stressful this can be. I know you are very worried. You are doing great!

furbabystar (Michelle) , I hope your Lulu is doing well too. It's just so hard sometimes. I wish they could talk to us and tell us how they feel.

Only just seen this as been dealing with my own RTA

Hope Freddie is feeling alittle more comfy.
I know how it feels to be looking after an injuried cat, Luckily Lulu has come off without any breaks until poor Freddie.
I am using Metacam too, It is honey flavoured so he should like it. It might be a good idea to try him with some tuna, even if you have to hold the plate in front of him or hand feed it.

Hope all goes well on Monday. I know a cat that had to have an Op on a broken pelvis and he bounced back really quickly

i had put the litter on a baking sheet to make it easier for him and he was able to use it but he struggled to get back up to his bed and was sometimes lying it which did look uncomfortable which i think was her main concern. Maybe i should put it in there for a while and then take it out as opposed to leaving it in there?

He has drunk alot of water recently which has made me a bit more comfortable but i want him to eat so that i can give him the metacam?! may try putting some in his mouth in a minute and see what happens.

He has to see a specialist orthapedic vet to determine if he needs the op and there is nothing anyone else can do until that decision has been made and it looks like cage rest is the suggested option to mend him anyway so i think this is going to be a long process...xx

Sweetie, Yes, use the syringe that came with the metacam. The trick to using a syringe to put anything liquid into your cats mouth so you won't choke him is to place the liquid in the side pocket between his cheek and gums and to release it slowly, very slowly, giving him time to swallow. If you put it directly into his mouth from the front, he will become distressed and could choke because he will fight you doing this. The tuna water would be of great help to keep him hydrated but will also encourage him to eat some as well. Don't worry so much about him eating though, drinking fluids is the most important thing right now. You could also try and hand feed him tuna bits. He might be to uncomfortable to even try to get to his food bowls.

I'm not sure I agree with removing his litter box. I think I would just cut a plastic litter pan down to no taller than an inch or so and still keep his litter pan in there with him. It is a cats natural instinct to bury their droppings. They want to keep clean. I would think having a very shallow litter pan would be better since he is used to using a litter box and not blankets. I would be afraid that he would try to 'hold' it as long as he could since he would not know where to go to the bathroom.

Is he able to stand on his own? I feel so awful for him. It's a shame that he has to wait until Monday. It really is. Isn't there any other vet that could help?

I have not had to look after a sick animal before so it is very scary! My boyfriend is being great and helping but neither of us have been in this situation before so are quite scared.

He has been for a wee a couple of times but no poop. The vet said that when they moved him at the vet that is when he pooped but i am scared of hurting him. She also told me to take the litter out of the cage as well as that would encourage him to stand so to just let him go when he wanted and change the blankets x

Oh good. Poor Freddie. I hope he is more comfortable now. Here's a thought....I recently had one of my cats get sick and he was not eating or drinking either....and not pooping. My vet had also put IV fluids in my baby which helped a great deal. But in addition to that my vet suggested that I mix a little can tuna water or tuna oil into my cats drinking water to encourage him to drink on his own. At first he was just to sick to drink on his own so my vet had me syringe feed him this same mixture of tuna water by mouth. I really think had I not done this, my cat would have continued down hill. It is extremely important that you get water into your cat anyway you can. With out water their whole intestinal system begins to shut down and they can't poop or pee or digest any food.

I feel so bad for you and Freddie to be going through this. What a nightmare. Have you ever had to nurse a sick animal before? I only ask because it can be very scary to know what to do. I will help you as much as I can, as I'm sure others here will too. My gosh, you still have a long ways to go before Monday gets here.

I rang the vet and took him in and they gave him an injection for the pain that should be ok for 6 hours but that was at 4pm! She said to try him with food in about an hour and he still has not eaten tho i think the shot took it out of him as he has been snoozing since really. May try some cheese now. He has not had anything to drink either although the vet said that he was on fluids yesterday so that was not too much of a worry. I just want him to eat something x

Oh no, I am so sorry to hear about poor Freddie. How awful. I think you should call your vet again and ask what to do. I can't imagine lying there all weekend with a fractured pelvis. He must be in a tremendous amount of pain. This must be very stressful for you as well. My heart goes out to you and I pray that Freddie will recover with no lasting problems.

Metacam does really need to be given with food. I know how bad you must be feeling to know he is in pain: keep trying to tempt him with his favourites. Or even something like strong flavoured pate: I have resorted to that, successfully, in the past. Or yoghourt? Or cheese?
