Pretty well really. The girls are much less threatened by him now he isn't a stinky Tom. He's really taken to Rachel, follows her everywhere. Think he'll settle into the family fine

We had to get him snipped though cause there's no spaces at the RSPCA (well, they say none, there's always room I'm sure!).

Its very likely there actually isnt any space, you will probably have been one of 20 others trying to rehome to them today 

I hope they prefer him once his hormones has gone

Hi everyone,

just to update. We're having him 'snipped' tomorrow, and have contacted the local RSPA to let them know we've got him. If no one claims him and our other cats accept him after his op, we'll obviously keep him. If there's no improvement I guess we'll have to put him on the list to be rehomed. We had to get him snipped though cause there's no spaces at the RSPCA (well, they say none, there's always room I'm sure!).

I would probably suggest advertising him 'just in case' but going by what you described when he was found chances are he is or was a stray.   At least if you make the necessary checks then you know you have done the right thing and put your mind at rest about someone frantically looking for him.

After that as Angie says you have to make up your mind whether to keep him or register him with a rescue for rehoming.  Either way deffo get him neutered ASAP as toms can be rather whiffy!!

i am surprised you could have an adult unneutered tom in your house for 2 months without noticing, normally you can tell within hours.

Must be really upsetting, I'd guess that you've bonded with him now and then of course there is the worry about your other cat who is still missing    Is the vet 100% sure that the cat you have is not neutered - was it a visual check only rather than a 'feel'?  Both my boys are neutered and one still looks quite big in that department.

He was found about 10 miles away. A friend thought she saw him so we put some posters up at the school. A lady called to say a cat had been living in there shed for 3 or so weeks, she thought it was him. Everything fitted, both how he looked, and where he was, just off a straight line between old and new house.

He was underweight and had some ticks, but was still pretty friendly. The area he was found is very close to a popular canal, with a pub and plenty of people living on boats, so could probably survive for quite some time like that.

Yes, I think so too - but there are plenty of hippy boaties around there, might not agree with neutering at all.

Chances are someone that wouldn't bother neutering their cat wouldn't be too bothered about losing it.

advertise him as a found pet in the area he was lost - petsearch, vets, papers , shops etc.

You may now have someone elses pet and they will be grieving for him.
If you haven't heard from anyone after a week or so then assume he is a stray and make the decision to keep him or register him with a rescue. Personally, I would get him neutered asap anyway.

how was he 'found'? can he be put back in the area he came from if anyone was feeding him?

Hi,

We recently lost one of our cats soon after moving house. After a 3 month search we found him in approx 12 miles. Or at least we
thought we had found him. This cat was the right size, same markings,
same temprement. But after a trip to the vets to get him microchipped
today (after being in the house for 2 months), the vet noticed he was not neutered. We were sure we had
neutered ours, and checked with the previous vet who confirmed this.

We're both really quite embarrassed - everyone who knew him thought he
was him. The fact he's not and that he's not been neutered explains
why our 2 female (spayed thankfully!) girls get angry at him, so we
need that situation resolved I would think regardless of what happens.

So we now have a cat that's not ours, and are unsure of what we should
do now - any ideas?
