His name was Puddy (inspired by how Tweety Pie would refer to Sylvester..) and we're still missing him badly...

Thanks for all the wonderful comments, I've decided that we may adopt a new kitten sometime in the next few months and so I should hopefully return back here to introduce him. Need to wait a little while though so that it doesn't just feel like Puddy is being replaced... although Puddy is most definitely a truly irreplaceable friend.

Hi,

Unfortunately our little friend passed away last night. I guess he just didn't have any more energy left to fight it. Its quite a shock to realise that we won't be seeing him playing around the house any more.

Thanks for all your kind words and well-wishes. Its unlikely that I'll be returning here regularly now that he's gone (although I'll try to stop by) but I would just like to take this opportunity to say that this place really does feel like a genuine community, and I wish you and all your feline friends the very very best.

I hope too that they can stabilise him. It does sound neurological - can that be linked to FIV or can FIV lead to some deficiency that can cause this type of behaviour and illness? I expect you feel so helpless as well as so worried about him. Sending lots and lots of positive vibes for him

After taking him to the vet earlier, he kept him in for observation, additional blood tests and to put him on a drip. I just spoke to him over the telephone and it appears that his bloodwork indicates he is FIV positive. Aside from obvious questions regarding why it wasn't caught in the previous blood test and how he might've got it, its still uncertain as to whether his current illness is affected by this and to what extent (FIV can lead to poorer immune system, as you may know) so the vet is currently keeping him overnight.

...Not really sure what to say at this point, just trying to keep positive thoughts for our little creature at the moment.

I think if it was one of mine I would consider consulting another vet - he sounds like a very poorly boy and the delay in a diagnosis cannot be helping him.

I hope they can sort him out because I suppose they can't really get any treatment started as they don't know whats going on? Mind you, when Gwyn was so ill last year and we werent entirely sure what was going on, various possibilities were mooted and she was medicated quite aggressively for those things just in case!

Have you had the result of the other blood test? I know you said there was one more result to come through - do you know what they've tested for?

Still no change, unfortunately. He did pick up a little in the evening yesterday, only to resume his pacing. Only nibbled a couple of bites of food also. He's back to being practically unconscious now. He also fell down the stairs today due to being so drained of energy, which is very worrying, especially as this could additionally lead to additional injuries (doesn't seem to have broken anything, although hard to tell when he's so unresponsive).

I am no expert and haven't seen these symptoms myself but my first thought was neurological. I think perhaps you do need help from a more specialist vet. His symptoms sound worrying and must be so distressing for you. I really hope for both of you they find out soon what's up and he starts to recover. Best wishes.

Hi,

He was doing a lot better yesterday... a lot more alert, minimal pacing and vocalising. Also ate a decent amount. Took him to the vet again yesterday also, although still didn't discover anything new. Vet did prescribe a mild laxative but mainly just to help ease his digestive system, not for any signs of constipation, etc. He did start pacing a bit in the evening, although not quite as badly.

However, today he's gone back to being totally exhausted and barely registering any sign of movement. Hasn't eaten or drunk anything either. I dunno, it just seems completely inexplicable to be honest. Yesterday was the first day that he showed any signs of improvement, yet this doesn't appear to be consistent with his behaviour today.

We did consider whether it may be some kind of brain injury/tumor/etc, however our vets don't suspect that as of yet (can't rule anything out though).

This is very worrying as the symptoms seem quite pronounced and the vets have no clue!

Have you looked at his eyes and tested whether he can see and also test his hearing by clapping and jingling keys behind him.

I do hope that they stop messing about and if they dont know, refer him to someone who may be able to help without you paying for more and more tests that will have to be repeated.

Vet called earlier to say that they didn't find anything of note in his blood tests, although they are still waiting for one more result...

He's been practically comatose since 10am this morning now, barely moving, just sleeping in a corner. I'm thinking/hoping that this is a consquence of his nonstop walking previously and the fact he hasn't eaten anything today (can't get him to eat at all... if i carry him to his foodbowl, he practically just dozes off on it instantly. Ditto with waterbowl)

Have another appointment with vet tomorrow, maybe it'll turn up something. I did mention my thoughts about hyperthyroidism over the phone, which he said he thought was unlikely due to his age, as we already know, although he said its best not to rule anything out until they can pinpoint things further. Haven't had his blood pressure checked yet actually (that I know of), so perhaps that'll be worth trying also.

I understand how distressing it is to see them in that kind of way, ^George^ had v.similar problems - walking into things/through water bowls/staring at walls -and he turned out to have trouble with his CNS due to FIP

He's had a blood test and xrays taken yesterday, just waiting on the results. I believe the vet mentioned checking for heart conditions, so I think thats primarily what they'll be looking for.
Sorry to hear about your cat, Yvonne, must've been terrible. Reading the forum thread that you posted and noting some of the similarities also made me worry with regards to possible blindness, which could be partly explain why he's been acting clumsily. That said, walking nonstop would also exhaust a cat, possibly comprimising his vision also. He's also been seen by 2 vets, neither of whom suggested hyperthyroidism (which is supposed to be an easy diagnosis from what i understand) so perhaps that may not be the case.

At the moment, I'm thinking the similarity of his symptoms and to hyperthyroidism is possibly due to his condition being heart-related, and so the symptoms may be similar and easy to confuse. The not-knowing is the frustrating part really too. Anyway, thanks for your kind words and I will keep this thread updated with his condition.

So sorry to hear about Ginger from the symptoms that you described I also thought about an over active thyroid but as you have said it is unusual in a cat so young. The symptoms are very similar to my own cat when she had an overactive thyroid.

Has he had a blood test? Toby (my little guy we lost recently to CRF

) had diabetes and when he had a fit he wouldn't sit down at all. Sorry, just trying to think of possibilities.

Thanks for your concern. Still no progress unfortunately, although he did exhaust himself out enough to get a few moments of rest.

No new ideas on what it could be either. After a lot of internet research, I've concluded that his symptoms most closely resemble feline hyperthyroidism, yet this is not something that usually affects young cats so its hard to say really.

So frustrating...

Hi,

First time poster.. just registered in the hope that I can find some insight here into our cat's recent behaviour...

We have a 4-year old male (neutered) ginger tom who has been acting very strangely for over a week now. Last saturday, he started off being very drowsy and not bothering to move anywhere. He perked up a little the next day, eating and grooming fine, but then started to find corners of the house and just sit staring at the wall. After taking him to the vet, who said it may be a bug or something and gave some antiobiotics. Since then, he hasn't really got any better and has now started walking non-stop around the house for hours in a very worrying way. We took him to an emergency vet on sunday (i.e 8 days after he first started acting up), when he then started to breath oddly, panting with his tongue hanging out like a dog. The vet kept him overnight, took some xrays and blood tests (for which we are awaiting the result) and let us take him home today. However, he has just continued to walk around the house non stop since he got back (6 hours now..) so we're going have to confine him to force him to rest. He also seems _very_ dopey and clumsy now, he gets stuck in narrow passages and starts meowing loudly till he is taken out, he steps into his food/water bowl, etc. I also noticed that he meowed loudly while relieving himself previously, and has yet to use his litterbox since returning from the vet today.

Its quite painful to see him in this state really, and not really know what it might be. Neither vet has provided any useful insight as of yet, so if anyone finds these symptoms familiar or has some thoughts, I'd love to hear them.
