Im pleased to say Thomas is a Hermaphrodite some days he is Thomas and others Thomasina lol. we only found out by the huge weight gain in him and the extensive tests they did. The reason I say Im pleased to say is because we now know why he is like he/she is

It makes no difference to us and only does him/her occasionally. He is quite a gentle giant anyway but some days he turns into a little (well not so little)  hiding cats which we know the others pick up on and we are sure thats why they bully him

On a more serious note (well, slightly) - will you think of the cat as a boy or a girl?  Will s/he have a girl's name or a boys name?  I can't pretend to know anything whatsoever about hermaphrodite cats but given that neutering of either sex pretty much desexes them I wouldn't have thought it would make much difference in any other way.  Are there any other health complications that go along with being hermaphrodite?

My cat Olli was born without testicles, after investigation, His sexual organs didn't exist but he does have a penis so is classed as a male even though he has no male traits.  as for his behaviour.  Well I delivered him, he was brought up with me so is socialised with other animals humans etc, but he is very aloof even for a cat.  very occasionally he comes to you for an ear rub but if you touch him when he doesn't want to he gets very upset and walks away. He very occasionally associates with my other cats but again only when he wants.  He is happy but doesnt appear to have an emotional ability so he doesnt realise what he's missing in terms of cuddling loving etc.  so with your cat I wouldn't know but dont be upset if she/him is never a lap cat.  Just love him/her for what youve got.

He should be fine to have both operations at the same time. This is also better as it will mean just the one anaesthetic. It only takes a couple of minutes to castrate a cat so i`m sure it will be ok.

the breeder took he/she to the vet for a check up and he told her the puddy had testicles (although very small) and a vagina. He may even have a penis (which may or may not develop) - its all very cryptic! hehe
i wouldnt worry too much as he told her they are very very rare but apparantly tortoiseshell toms usually are hermaphrodites!

Just asking a question in relation to the subject- how can you tell if a cat is a hermaphrodite? Is it only by the vet telling you or is there signs?

Just asking as my male kitten has come into season and there have been males hanging round the door, and I don't know why. Seems strange I know but after reading this I'm thinking all sorts.

thanks Amanda for the info im popping to the vets tomorrow morning to have a chat about it as bennie had the snip on Wednesday so he has to go for his check up. Im so glad to hear that he/she grew up to be a normal kitty (whatever one of those are ! hehe)

it certainly is a bit of mind bender!!!!!! 

I called the vet nurse last night and she quoted £75 ish for the double neuter (castration&spay) does that sound about right? Also does anyone know if he/she could undertake the procedure at the same time (anaesthetics scare me a little!)

We had a client at my last job that owned a cat like this. It was a few years ago so the details are a little hazey now!! I remember that the owner thought he was a boy but he didn`t have any testicles. The vet ended up opening him up like you would if you spayed a female because he thought that the testicles hadn`t descended for some reason. I remember his suprise when he found ovaries instead but i`m sure i remember that the little cat didn`t have a uterus either so it was all very unusual. The cat was lovely and from what i saw of her/him it behaved just like any other puss.

I did a search on yahoo on hermaphrodite cat and hermpahrodite feline and it didn't really through up much but there are a few tales of cats that once they have had the ops go on to be happy healty "normal" cats.  Here's one called Norman http://www.purr-n-fur.org.uk/featuring/prac01.html

its all a bit technical that website but ill battle thru it !! hehe im more worried about behaviour more than anything as he/she will be a house kitty so im kinda picturing them spraying whilst being aloof (or something to that effect!hehe) and we have  a 6mth old male who im sure isnt going to tell the difference anyway but i really dont know!
 If anyone has any info on costs for the neutering that would be a great help (as the mog may need both castration and spay!) has any of you guys ever encountered (or own!) an intersex kitty??

If your little ones are hermaphrodites you will probably have to have them neutered and spayed.

hi guys
a bit of a random one we have just been told by the breeder that our baby to be is Intersex. Has anyone got any info or good websites we can look up on the subject??!!! I know its prob not your average week night question!!hehe
