Hello again,

Just wanted to say one final thank you, on behalf of Reg, my OH & myself for all your messages of support & sympathy, they have meant so much to us over this past week.

Reggie, crossed the Bridge, at 3.30 on Tuesday pm.
He has since been privately cremated & his ashes are now home.
In the summer, when nature is in full bloom and the sun high in the sky, he will be scattered in our garden.

God Bless our Darling Boy, you are truly loved & missed.

I'm so sorry to hear about dear Reggie, Jasmine.  You tried so hard for him and he did really well for a few days.  It is so unfair...poor little babe.

He will be at peace now, with no more pain and will be bright and beautiful and young again.  He will always be close to you and you will be reunited with him again one day....I'm certain of it.

R.I.P. Reggie, sweetheart.  You were dearly loved.....go play in the flower-filled meadows beyond and watch over your mum who will miss you so much.

Thinking of you Jasmine

Lots of love

Roz

So sorry to hear this Jasmine, will be thinking of you tomorrow.  You are giving Reggie the greatest gift...

The Greatest Gift

I always knew this time would come,
From the very instant our eyes first met.
How I loved you then! How I love you now!
I made a promise then, and I will keep that promise now...
You will not suffer from a pain that will not heal;
You will not know the loss of a life remembered, now gone.

It is for me alone to make this decision,
The price for the bright joy and pure laughter
You brought me during the time we shared.
I am the only one who can decide when it is time.
When my hope dies, and my fear rides high,
Just when I need you most, I must let you go.

It is for you alone to tell me when you are ready
For without your guidance, I will not know
When to lay my grief, my guilt, my anger
My sorrow and my selfish heart aside
And give you this last gift, this greatest gift.
Your eyes will speak to mine, and I will know.

The pain of this moment is excruciating.
Tears stream down my face in a river of sorrow.
And my heart drowns in a pool of grief.
For you have spoken and I have listened,
And unlike other decisions I have made
This one brings no relief...no comfort...no peace.

For if there´s one thing you´ve taught me,
If there´s only one thing I´ve learned...
Unconditional love has a condition after all,
I must be willing to let you go, when you speak to me
I must be willing to help you go, if you cannot go alone.
And I must accept my pain so you can be free of yours.

Go easily now, go quickly now,
Do not linger here, it is time for you to leave.
Go find your strength, go find your youth.
Go find the ones who've gone before you.
You are free to leave me now, free to let your spirit soar
Rest easy now, your pain will soon be gone.

I pray I will find comfort in my memories...
In the dark and lonely days ahead.
I cannot say I will not miss you, I cannot say I will not cry.
For only my tears can heal my broken heart.
But, I promise you this; as long as I live,
You will live, alive in my mind, forever in my heart.

So I give you this last gift, all I have left to give,
And this will be my greatest gift...sending you away.
It is the measure of my unconditional love...
For only the greatest love can say,
"Good-bye, go find the bridge, we'll meet again,
Loving you has been the greatest gift of all.

Bad news today I'm afraid, we had to take Reggie to the vets this afternoon, his kidneys are now failing fast, he is dehydrated and the toxins are building up & attacking his body, there is simply nothing more we can do for him.

He doesn't appear distressed at present and has even eaten a little food, but we are going to do the kindest thing and have him pts tomorrow morning at home.

Concerning the costipation, and I know many here are likeley to disagree but my bvets recommended what they told me was an old fashioned remedy and that was carnation condensed milk. One teaspoon a day and ai diluted it with warm water so Ducha could drink it.

he wouldnt to start with and then was shouting at me if I didnt leave it for him

he had it for about a week after dental work and it worked!

Yes, whatever method you use it`s still the same amount that you can put under the skin at any one site. The fluid bag and drip method is quite a good one and you can get different attachments to connect a butterfly needle onto this. I guess it all depends on what the individual cat will tolerate!

Yes I see  Amanda -  its about 20ml PER kg of body weight, so the amount depends on the weight of the cat - I get it!  ;D So what happens if you use the bag drip method - is that the same, based on body wieght again?

Gillian, you need to do more than one injection because the most you can give subcutaneously is 10-20ml/kg/injection site. Also, if you give too much the pressure pushes some of it back out again and it must be a bit uncomfortable. You could also ask the vet for some local anaesthetic such as Emla cream which might help things a little bit. It might be easier to use a butterfly needle which is quite small and Reggie may tolerate it a bit better.

When Reggie had blood tests done did it show if he was anaemic?

With the syringe method, normally just one needle is put in place, you fill several  syringes to the amount of fluids required from the solution bag, and then each syringe is emptied via a tube to that needle - so therefore should only need ONE injection per day.

Here's where it shows you this method http://www.felinecrf.org/giving_sub-qs_syringe.htm - that sounds much easier doesnt it? and much better for Reg and less stressful for you. That certainly seems to be how many people that do subqs for their cats do it, I'd not heard about not injecting more than 20mls in any one area before.

Hope you get some good advice from the Yahool group.

Hi, just a quick update.

Reggie had another good day yesterday, but doesn't have a great appetite today & we think he is constipated.
We have suspended the fluid treatment, as this is just too distressing for him (the max we managed in one day was 3 injections).

I have signed up to the Yahoo group, have yet to find anyone who was been given this advice, I am going to discuss it with another vet in the practice tomorrow.

J.

Hi Jasmine, so glad to hear that Reggie is home and feeling better.
I dont have any experience of giving sub-q's as I couldnt find a vet up here that would show me or even entertain the idea of giving them at home.  As Tiggy's mum has said the Yahoo CRF support group is very good and very knowledgable on these matters.  I have read and spoken to many people who found it very difficult and stressful at first too, so dont dispair coz your not alone.  Alot of people swear by talking with the cat and explaining things to them, I know that sounds daft but I used to do that with Winston when giving him meds etc and my personal feeling is that it did make a difference, especially when trying to get him to eat on his off days.
Fertekor is a contreversial issue but again my personal experience is that it did help to keep Winston stable, along with vitamin supplements such as Pet tinic.
Wish you both the very best for the future. xxx
