Sorry, I didn't keep up with the post, although I ought to have, I did give him some Metacam and no repetition since, so no idea what it was all about.  His teeth are perfect, he gives me good views when he is doing his cat breath yawns on my lap, sort of, he can't fit so he sits with his bum on the floor and his front end on my lap. Maybe I just woke him unexpectedly with a caress and he thought it would be something different, we don't know his history before Sheila got him.

You still got some metacam in Paula? Give him a shot and if it works, he's in pain and needs to see the vet. Might have broken a tooth...

ALL THIS CAUSED ME TO GO BACK AND READ NAPOLEONS STORY, HEARTBREAKING AND HAD FORGOTTEN SO MUCH ABOUT THE BEGINNING..............READ FIRST 15 PAGES OR SO.

HE WAS ORIGINALLY DIAGNOSED WITH AN EAR PROBLEM BUT VET, UNLIKE YOURS LIZ, WAS TOTALLY INCOMPETENT. WITHIN 24 HRS WE HAD CHANGED TO A DIFFERENT VET AT SAME PRACTICE AND ALSO THE HEAD MAN GOT INVOLVED AND HE HAD NO EAR PROBLEM AT ALL.

WHAT WAS DIFFERENT ABOUT NAPOLEON AND I HAD FORGOTTEN WAS ALL THE DROOL HE PRODUCED WHICH I THINK THREW EVERY ONE OFF THE SCENT BUT SOMEONE ON PURRS CAME UP WITH A LINK THAT SHOWED NAPOLEONS SYMTOMS BEING LIKE EPILEPTIC ONES AND ONE LIKE GRAND MAL AND OTHERS MORE MINOR.

HE WAS AT THE TIME IN MAJOR TROUBLE AND TOO ILL TO TRAVEL TO EAST COAST FOR MRI SCAN, INFACT HE WAS SO ILL THAT THE VET SAID HE SHOULD NOT BE MOVED AT ALL! AMAZING HOW THINGS HAVE CHANGED IN  7 YEARS COS MRI SCANNERS MUCH MORE AVAILABLE NOW ALTHOUGH HE NEEDED TO GO TO A SPECIALIST TREATMENT CENTRE TOO. BRISTOL HAD NO MRI SCANNER! BUT WERE ADVISING MY VET AND THATS WHERE THEN MARBOCYL ABS IDEA CAME FROM.

HOWEVER I DETRACT AND FOR MERLIN I AGREE A VET CHECK ALTHOUGH IF IT WAS A SEIZUE NOTHING WILL SHOW BUT HE SHOULD BE KEPT A GOOD EYE ON AND THE FIRST SIGN OF ANYTHING SIMILIAR GET HIM BACK TO VETS IMMEDIATELY.

I would pop him to the vets for a check over - ears can make then like this so it may be an ear infection and they get over sensitive - we are going through this with Jester currently but good old Synulox tablets are helping with his moved to the middle ear and we are on month 4 of treatment

Quite disturbing Paula, and I'm inclined to think same as Gill.  Either that, or he's suffered a trauma of sorts which either has him in pain, or which has sparked redirected aggression.  Am glad you weren't more badly hurt, and hope Merlin is calmer today.   I'd recommend getting him checked over if you can safely handle him x

THINK YOU NEED TO CHANGE TITLE COS IT DOESNT MAKE SENSE!

WATCH HIM CAREFULLY PAULA COS THIS IS VERY CLOSE TO HOW NAPOLEON WAS WHEN HE HAD HIS FIRST SEIZURE, LUCKILY HE WAS ON THE FLOOR BUT IT STARTED WITH A LITTLE GROWL AND THEN COMPLETE MADNESS AND I WOULD HAVE BEEN SHREDDED IF I HAD GOT CLOSE.

I DIDNT KNOW WHAT IT WAS AT THE TIME BUT SOMETHING TOLD ME TO GET A PILLOW AND MAKE SRE IT WAS BETWEEN ME AND HIM AND NOT TO TOUCH HIM, JUST TO TRY AND STOP HIM HURTING HIMSELF.

IT HAPPENED AGAIN BEFORE I TOOK HIM TO THE VETS AND THEY DIDNT SEEM TO UNDERSTAND WHAT I WAS TELLING THEM, SAW AN IDIOT WHO SAID IT WAS HIS EARS, THEN A GREAT VET TOOK OVER BUT ALTHOUGH HE HAD A SMALL SEIZURE WHEN UNDER OBSERVATION  FOR A DAY. SHE STAYED LATE THAT NIGHT AND I COLLECTED HIM ABOUT 2000,

SHE WROTE ME NOTES THANK GOODNESS AND GAVE HIM AN AB INJECTION WITH STUFF THAT GOES TO BRAIN. SHE HAD HIM WALKING ROUND THE SURGERY.

I TOOK HIM HOME AND ABOUT 15 MINS FROM SURGERY HE HAD ONE IN HIS CARRIER, LUCKILY WAS ABLE TO STOP,,,,,,,,,,,HE THWN HAD ANOTHER OME JUST ROUND THE CORNER.......TO CUT A VERY LONG STORY SHORT HE WAS ADMITTED TO THE VETS I AM NOW WITH.

SO BACK TO MERLIN ...................THEY GET EXHAUSTED IF IT WAS SEIZURE AND NEED TO BE LEFT TO QUIETLY GET BACK TO NORMAL, DIM LIGHTS OR NO LIGHTS, QUIET AND NAPOLEON WOULD SCOFF A WHOLE POUCH OF FOOD, HE WAS STARVING.

PLEASE BE VERY CAREFUL DO NOT TOUCH HIM IF IT HAPPENS AGAIN, TRY AND STAY WITH HIM, IT LASTS UNDER A MINUTE BUT SEEMS FOR EVER AND HIS SO DISTRESSING TO WATCH. CATS CANNOT SWALLOW THEIR TONGUE.

I AM SOUNDING VERY DRAMATIC AND HOPE IT WASNT A SEIZURE. NAPEOLON WAS NOT EPILEPTIC BUT IT WAS SOME INFECTION IN HIS BRAIN.

ITS JUST YOUR DESCRIPTION MADE ME THINK IMMEDIATELU OF NAPOLEON AND CANT REMEMBER MERLINS HISRORY.

He has been in all evening, but he has just come back up to me, perfectly fine. I risked life and limb (Okay the life bit might be an exaggeration  :naughty:) to stroke him again, all down his length and he is perfectly fine. I think I have psychopathic/schizophrenic cat  :naughty:, I have had him for a relatively long time now, this is completely out of character. Just hope I don't get a repetition. It hurt.  :shify: :shify: :shify:

I don't like pain. :'(

Hi Paula,

My first thought would be that he might be in pain somewhere. Either that or he has been thoroughly beaten up while he was outside which has left him feeling aggressive with no outlet for it.

Not much help I'm afraid  :(

Merlin has suddenly turned into a snarling ball of fury, even when trying to touch his head, his whole body seems to have become sensitised, started off with him lying across my lap as normal, he started to growl, left him alone, as one does, he was still lying on my lap, but every time I touch him he tries to bite and slash me to ribbons, growling and snarling all the time. The other cats are upstairs or outside. Even when he was new here he has never shown aggression to people, only the other cats, sorted with zylkene. Any ideas peeps?
