Yep, I've chanced across these websites that mention the use of human painkillers on cats, I winced  :shocked:. Apparently thay can be used but in EXTREMELY LOW doses. i would never self medicate my animals without the vets permission to use the drug. Just too big a can of worms and heartbreak if you get it wrong  :(

on reflection I might email the link you posted to her, I mean she did tell me about the cat knowing I was interested in cats - its just friendly advice after all (haven't heard from fortekor friend though!!)

Why are people such cheapskates with their animal's lives  >:(

I would love to give her a stomach full of aspirin and see her haemorrhage - it's not nice (not going into detail but I know 1st hand)

Mark it won't happen, she won't take it to the vet.  I honestly can't do anything on this one (unlike the fortekor fiasco) I see this woman once a year at a meeting

10mg per kg body weight every 48 - 72 hours

One site said if you give a bat aspirin every 4 hours, it will be dead in 2 days  :scared:


They need to get it to the vet now  :'(

omg - I might have known - she said "well we came home and it couldn't hold it's head up so I was all for taking it to the vet but my husband said no lets look on the internet"  a little knowledge really is a dangerous thing.

The dose is 1/4 tab every 3 days - it takes cats 72 hours for cats to metabolise aspirin  :scared: - otherwise it will build up and poison the cat  :scared:

My vet recommended aspirin for my old female who had a heart murmur but to be honest I was very nervous giving it, she has died now (not as a result of giving or not giving aspirin I hasten to add)  :-[

Vet advice only I would think though.

paracetamol is deadly to cats.  There are quite a lot of human meds used on cats, often for different conditions than they are used for in humans. Only by vets though.

Well you learn sommat new everyday!


Mt attitude is that I wouldnt take Cat medecin unless it was prescribed by my doctor - similarly my cats dont get medecin unless it is precribed by the vet (with the exception of frontline!)

Asprin can be given to cats and for the reason just mentioned as indeed that is what a vet told me to do, however, it must be only a small dose and only on vets advice.

this person is treating a cat for a suspected stroke after finding out that aspirin is used (presumably in humans) on the internet - If I knew where she lived I'd report her

According to signs in the waiting room at my vet, NO human painkillers whatsoever - apparently they are treating an increasing number of cases where people make illness and injury worse by then poisoning their pets with human medication.  One of my neighbours gives her dog small doses of painkillers, and even sedatives prescribed for her own use - she reckons she's worked out the correct dosage based on his weight in comparison to an average person, but I swear it's only a matter of time until she poisons him.  I also know someone who gave their dog Benylin because he had a cough, and he died  >:(

Oooh I wouldnt think so............aspirin thins the blood doesnt it , so wouldnt be good for Kitties? Are there any vets in here who could help?
