Tried the renal food this morning mixed in with normal and she's eaten it all

Time will tell how she gets on as I reduce the normal food. Thanks for the advice I may try mixing it with senior food instead of normal if I find she won't eat it on its own.

Max is now regularly eating his renal food

A combination of RC dry, with the new RC tuna or beef sachets seems to be a cert at the moment. He also eats the Specific as well, so I combine all these different foods with his normal 'senior' food and sometimes his Natures Menu so he doesn't get bored.

The felinecrf site mentioned below is an excellent resource and should answer most of your questions. There's a lot to take in there, but it's well worth setting aside some time to try and absorb it. It also includes nutritional data for a variety of commercial foods, which is useful if she won't eat the renal food.

Clapton is doing really well on Fortekor with a mix of senior & normal food. I haven't heard of a cat yet that will eat renal food. Helen can advise on this but I believe you can feed normal food with phosphorus binders added. It's just calcium chloride that stoped the phosphorus being absorbed. Some vets are against it but others for it. It sounds like there is no need to panic. Clapton was disagnosed November before last and he is better now than he was then

If Crunchie won't eat the renal foods then the next best thing is to find low phosphorous foods which are often the Senior range of the likes of Felix etc. but you can cross that bridge if and when you come to it. Tiggy wouldn't eat any of the specialised foods and to be honest if she had I would have really struggled financially what with all the extra cost of the bloodtests, medications (she was hyperthyroid aswell) and supplements.

If she does get on with the renal foods then it's often cheaper to buy online rather than direct from the vet. Vetuk have 3 boxes of 12 K/D pouches (36) for £18. They seem to have a really good selection of prescription type foods, not just Hills. Delivery on food items is free if you spend over £30 or just £2.99 for under £30.

i can send you a pouch of each of the RC if you like, Rosie doesnt like them. Also ask your vets for free samples of the dry, RC and Hills do both provide them, and my vet used to do me small bags of k/d up - Snowy liked the dry k/d, but would only eat wet when she was feeling poorly.

I make their adverts. Whenever there's an offer on at a branch I always pop it in the "Bargains" section. They always seem to have great deals on vaccinations and stuff so I'm glad to hear of a happy customer. I'll pass your comments on to them!

On the renal side of things there are certainly many of us who've been there or are there now and there's bags of support. Feel free to PM me anytime with seemingly silly, trivial questions. I only know from losing a cat to it but she didn't have the luxury of early diagnosis so Crunchie has a good future ahead of her.

Good luck - my vet didn't give me any Hills, as she said it isn't the most popular for cats. I got 3 kinds of Royal Canin, and picking up some more on Thurs - I am lucky though, they let me buy a couple of pouches first to see what she thinks.

Crunchie having her stitches out on friday. All healing well

I have been given some Hills k/d cat food for her kidneys so I'll try that tomorrow. £7.80 for 12 85g pouches eek!

Wow just had a follow up call from my vet to check crunchie is getting on ok, such a different level of service than my old one.

In a way it's good news you have found out about the kidney issues, most owners only find out when a huge % of kidney function is lost but due to her having the blood test for the op you have probably found out years before you otherwise would which means it could easily be controlled with diet and perhaps later medication.

She needs to go back in a week apparently. She's on anti biotics for tail and some medicine for her kidneys.

Glucoma in humans is a sign of diabetes, so assume it is in cats too. Maybe your vet should check for this too

I am sure that Crunchie will be fine once all the meds and the tail are sorted and sending lots of good wishes, the vets sound good too

Glad the new vets are treating Crunchie well

With regard to early renal failure, my boy Max has just been diagnosed with the same. If you can, get a copy of the bloodworks and post up on here, as there's some really fantastic peeps who got me through my early panicking, and gave me some super advice and information. I'll post the link to my previous thread as well as its good some good advice re food etc.

Hi everyone

Thanks for the advice on crunchie's infected tail cyst. She went into the vets this morning for the operation to remove the cyst. All was well, Il ove this new vets, heated blanket for her bedding and lovely staff. However I had a phone call this morning to say that they had done the pre op tests and crunchie has the signs of early renal failure.
They have gone ahead with the operation and are giving her lots of fluids. So with this and her glaucoma in one eye she isnt having a very good time at the moment. However she seems happy enough so she must be being brave!

Anyone know much about renal failure in cats? The vet said there are medications and diets we can try.

Also could this have anythign to do with the glaucoma?
