Hi Teresa,
Yes you are quite right there are lots of other tricks people will try and we all know you have to be on the ball.
They will try ringing to adopt kittens/cats and you and I both know you can tell almost from the first time you speak to them It's a NO WAY, so then they will try by getting a friend to phone and ask for one which is why we all do all the necessary checks before even allowing them through the door. :evillaugh:

Often we find a few months or weeks down the line they are ringing up again "I've got this kitten and I don't want it anymore cos it's scratched one of the kids"! or it's not well and I can't afford to take it to the vet! Where did you get it from ? The pet shop or a farm!
It's never ending is it?

Unfortunately I don't get an awful lot of time to keep telling our stories but will try to give little updates when I can

Regards
Jo

This is pretty much the norm and those of us in rescue have to be quick on the mark at sussing people out, not just the liars who dump cats but the liars wanting to rehome a cat. Perhaps Jo would like to post her stories here for everyone to see and comment on. :)

Yes, that is a good idea, Teresa.  I think many of us on Purrs would be interested in salutary tales from rescues.

 :gpoint:

Sadly, this doesn't surprise me.  Some people will do just about anything to get out of paying cattery fees, or to offload a cat they're had enough of of.

We had a similar thing with our little Sophie.  Someone rang CP and said there was a stray kitten in her garden and could they take it.  The lady who rehomed Sophie to us said she was very dubious about the woman's story and thought they owned the kitten and now she was a little bit older they didn't want her.   I'm so glad she was able to come to us  :Luv2:

We had one like that recently. She said there was a stray in the garden with a bad eye and could we take it. She said he plays with her cat and she feeds him. I asked why she hadn't taken him to the vet and she said because he wasn't hers and she couldn't afford a vet anyway. She agreed to drop him off at the vet and kept saying "are you going to pay the bill?" and "I won't have to pay will I?" etc. I told her no as long as he was signed over to us, we would cover treatment. Then she said "Can I have him back when he is better?" I said I didn't deal with things like that  :shify: - Anyway, she didn't get him back  ;)

can she not be reported as a serial cat abuser?

Unfortunately the onle people who have the powers to do anything would not be interested.

The only thing is if the owner lives in rented property perhaps the landlords could be advised. Although before I did that I have the facilities to take the little ones in if necessary.

That's disgraceful! I mean, really, really disgusting...

Would you guys do me a favour and either PM me or email me with a few stories (if you have the time) as I'd like to write a story on this for my blog and our newsletter. It's something people should know about.

I'm dumbfounded!!!  :scared:

Here is a typical case of trying to con a rescue! :sneaky: A woman phoned us on Monday saying she wanted all of her 4 cats re homing, when asked her name bells started ringing!
Why do you need to re home them? answear- well I'm going to my boy friends's on Thursday and then we are going away on holiday!!
Can't you get someone to look after them? Well so and so said they would but one of them is pregnant! and she doesn't want her giving birth and making a mess while we are away!!

I then realised who this person was! Last year she had 3 cats all un-neutered (at a different address) one of our girls ended up being a Taxi service taking them all to the vet and we payed the cost (we didn't want her letting them have litters) Then she said (last year) they had found a litter of kittens in the garden but they weren't hers!-yes they were! we took those in and told her not to get any more cats as we would not help again! She now has 6 cats and when asked why have you taken more on when you could not afford to neuter the other 3? Oh my friend gave them to me. I told her there was no way we would take them, only the pregnant one (as we don't want another escalation!)

I asked one of our girls to go round and check she was pregnant before we would agree to take her in, she has now decided she doesn't want them re homing because the neighbour will look after them! She was trying to con us into taking them and then when she came back from her holiday she would have wanted them back!! Cheap Cattery! We have the pregnant one signed over to us and bless her she is only about 7months old! There is no way she is having her or the babies back!!!  :P

This is just a typical way people try to use rescues!

Jo
