While I would always say ?50.000 is best spent on saving the living. As you rightly say the PDSA were not given the choice. had they applied for an award just to put into their funds to save little ones lives I doubt it they would have won a penny.
One the rare occasion fundung is given to animal anything it is usually for a particular project, I mean how many of the people on the panel that decides who receives an award would consider saving animals   lives as worthy enough. Possibly that would not bring much publicity.

Hi Sam,

Bravo!

I'm really pleased that the PDSA have won this money for the same reasons as you.? I agree that it would be wonderful if there was a choice between 50k being spent on dead animals or 50k being spent on live animals but regrettably that choice is not there....so is it not therefore better for the 50k to be awarded to restore a Garden of Remembrance for animals that gave their lives for human wars...not animal wars...so that others can acknowledge this fact also and perhaps consider how widespread the consequences of war actually are to all living creatures.

'The road to civilisation is littered with the bones of horses'

As Sam said if it helps even one person to focus their attention on the sacrifice made not only by humans but animals too, in such conflicts, then it is money well spent.

Sadly, even though I made a note of the number, I missed the deadline by half an hour..too busy doing other things.? I felt miserable that I had let the side down so I am overjoyed with this result.

Lots of love

Roz

sorry Gill,

I disagree - d'wanna fight about it?

I'm not really sentimental when it comes to graves - says she with about 10 cats, half dozen chickens and a rabbit at the top of the garden!
And I know there's a city developer with an eye for a small housing estate if we all sell some of our gardens.

And I know the money would not go to the animals anyway, but think what peeps on here could do with that!

I agree it is a lot of money but ther are over 3000 graves and 12 Dickens medal winners buried there.  the money is going to be spent on:

Restoration Project Objectives

Reinstate graves and repair broken headstones.
Repair the original lych gate at the entrance.
Number graves and produce a visitors' map.
Create a Garden of Remembrance.
Create safe and accessible footpaths.
Produce weather-proof information boards that tell the animals' amazing stories.
Create a permanent covered visitors information point.

I suppose in the long run if they can make more people aware of these amazing animals they will be able to make more people aware of the PDSA in turn hopefully be able to get more money from donations etc.

I dont think the graves of dead cats should be desecrated any more than those of dead humans. Yes it is a large amount of money but some of these cats were very brave and saved human lives and were awarded the animal equivalent of the victoria cross.

I dont think the money was on offer for living cats so it is not lost or wasted.

How would you feel if the grave of your beloved cat was turned into a carpark or something similiar?

I have to agree with Angie and Lynn that's a lot of money that a lot of 'living' cats really need. Just seems a bit weird to me but then I don't know what the other options were to vote for.
