Cheers Bonnie and Gill

Can't say it was a pleasant experience and don't feel too different tbh but mom says it makes her happier that I'm safer () so that's just great :-:. At least we had a nice free range chicken tonight to make up for my V.E.T. visit. (Tween you and me, vet looked at mom a bit odd about clipping my claws altho all agreed the one she didn't do was perhaps a bit rampant; I think he's on my side about needing them to grip stuff ;D)

All the best to Ducha Gill. I know what it's like to feel low Ducha and hope you are now well on the road to recovery.

(Modified as mom is a ninny and got Franta mixed up with Ducha. Mom's are so embarassing at times  :-[)

The deed is done and Tom was, as always, a star.  It seems Thomas is now officially "mine" per the vet which I take to mean officially one of the family after 18 years   :-:.

Cheers Desley. I rang vets this morning and VN/receptionist hadn't heard of chips that record temperature. I was going to ask vet how reliable they are but not much point now ;). He is however booked in for today at 5pm for the everyday chip and claw clipping.

Good luck with him - I wouldn't recommend the thermochips though, I am sure someone said they weren't reliable, and not all vets do them - mine have certainly never offered it. I must get Zia done at some point, but need to check how much the rescue's vet will cost (she doesn't go out much at the moment, although that might change when the weather gets better). Or I could wait till she has her dental. She has an upturned bin next to the bed to help her get on, or she uses the end and clambers up like Pebbles did. Molly ignores all aids and dives on the bed.
Please spay your cat

Sooty was nearly 20 when he passed away in the summer, I had a series of storage crates of different heights which I glued a piece of carpet to, and we used these as steps all over the house - only the sofas, onto the bed, and on either side of the cat flap.  They certainly made life a lot easier for the old chap!

PS My new cats have temperature microchips, it reads their body temperature as well as the chip, thus avoiding the need for the vet to shove a thermometer where the sun doesn't shine each time she sees them!  Might be worth considering for the older chap!

We have for the oldie lady's Sweetie and gracie a trunk at the end of the bed to help them if they don't want to jump all the way - both can but in cold weather they seem to need the extra step they are 18 and nearly 26 currently

We also cater for our 3 legged hooligan Maverick he has an upturned laundry basket and stoll to aid him out the utility room window and we bought his shelf from our last house so for the first time in his life Mav has access both front and back of the house - the others use the laundry basket and stool to!

For our diabetic boy Tiger (he has a badly damaged hind end from an RTS and loosing his tail) we have all the chairs on our kitchen table out so he can access the worktops and table for his extra treats and his twice daily injections

Our darling Bertie who died last year at 21.5 was blind so we had shelves that were the same set up as our last house so he could access all his high places and had everything arranged for him like our last house - he went on to master stairs and 3 acres of garden and paddock in this home!

Kocka used to have a red plastics stool which had a cross ridged surface and in the house she had all means of things to use as stepping up things  ;D

Bless him, think the microchip is essential; our golden oldie Buster 22years also wears a collar with his details printed on it.

Buster has a special stepping stool in the bathroom so he can climb into the bath to drink from the tap, its actually one of those kiddies stools so they can reach the loo but we covered it with carpet and Buster loves it.

Aw, belated happy 18th birthday to Tom. xxx

My 1st cat lived to be 26 and although she never went out near to the end of her life she would always manage to jump up into the bath and have a wee and poo at the plughole!!!!!! :naughty:

Tom looks quite big, I would suggest only putting low things for him to jump up on to and make sure they don't have slippery surfaces that he might slip on.  You could always have your bed, settee etc. lowered for him!!!!!

Hope he has many more happy years to come.

Microchipping Thomas
« Reply #1 on: February 03, 2008, 19:29:58 PM »
Tom was 18 at Christmas and he never been microchipped :-[

A few things have I think decided me to do the deed this week. He has been a bit of a home bird since his stroke last summer.  Our not so little man has however started to go outside again (in back garden) more frequently and he is really rather deaf now. Altho he doesn't wander, he is not the chap he was and we can't really trust him to wander if he gets confused.

Also started to clip his claws today for 1st time in a while and noticed one of his claws is curling inwards almost touching his paw pad  :scared: so vet needs to do that one pretty quick. He only went to vet for a check up 2 weeks ago and otherwise "healthy" touch wood.  Decided to ask vet to microchip at same time.

BTW we have a footstool from neighbour by the bed so he can jump on bed easily and could do with another one for the settee downstairs but wonder what others use for their oldies?
