Ohhh... I just found this thread and I am heartbroken myself, I couldn't bear parting with such a lovely boy if I were you, I really hope you could still consider arranging your garden so they can go out into the garden and play but not further away.  That's what I would definitely do had I lived in an individual house with a garden.  There are lot of people here who have taken this option successfully, and they should be able to give you all the advices you need.  Good luck!!

Sorry to those who have posted and not been acknowledged. The latest update on Charlie's situation is that our vet has come back to us with the suggestion of finding Charlie a 'foster home' for the time being to let us catch our breath and look at the situation without feeling under pressure. We have agreed as Charlie is going Stir crazy' being kept inside and it means we dont have to make a descision in haste. The vet said she would call me in a day or two (and to those wondering why we didnt do this in the first place, our vet was on holiday until now....she got our messages and called me straightaway). Thank you to all of you who have posted on the subject of Charlie, your support has helped us immensely. I will keep you posted if I may about Charlies progress.

I haven't any new advice, I'm afraid, but totally go along with catproofing the garden, which is what I've had to do. Feel so sorry for you in your predicament

What a heart breaking predicament to be in, your neighbours sound totally unreasonable and awful.  >:(  >:(

I really hope that you manage to find Charlie a new loving forever home - he is a handsome boy.

Have any of your other neighbours got cats because if so it might be worth warning them because if your Charlie has found the rabbits them Im sure other cats will too.

What is he like with dogs?

Good luck xx

I thinks this is so sad and understand completely the situation you are in    Neighbours are often terible things to have these days and the Police and authoritys are completely useless.

I dont know how big your garden is but I agree with cc that cat proofing would be the best way to go and this would also prevent the yob getting in unless he caused criminal damage.

I have probs with a neighbour too who is next door and was told by the police, who keep telling me different stories , that if the offender was reported 3 times within a small period the police would have to get involved, the problem is proving it. Mine only does stuff when there are no witnesses!

I think that your beautiful Charlie is attacking your other cat cos he wants to go outside, and it will be so sad for you to have to rehome him.

I wish you much luck in rehoming him if you feel you cannot resolve this through cat proofing and I am so sorry for the heartbreak this is causing

Charlie is adorable! Hmmm....are you definate that rehoming is the only option? (Sorry, I know the decision is probably hard enough.)

When I lived in the house previous to this one, an old guy came up to me to ask if I had a ginger cat. Being an exceptionally proud cat mum I stated that I did indeed. He told me that he'd seen it messing on his garden and was going to put something down that was poisonous to cats - I told him he would most definately be paying the vets bill if he did so. (He lived in a block of flats directly opposite and my lad isn't much of an adventurer. I'm not even sure the ginger cat he was talking about WAS mine.) Some people just want to cause upset and I don't think my reaction was the one he expected; he was utterly gobsmacked that I didn't apologise profusely. Had he handled the matter differently, he would've got a much less abrupt reaction.

Grrrr..... >:( .....thinking about him makes me cross!

What type of garden have you got? Could it be catproofed? Its not that much to do it, I done mine for under £100.

I also had a "free spirit" cat he would cry at the door all night to get out but now he dosn't because he knows he can only go into the garden, and I also have a cat who beats up anyone who goes near her, I have 4 cats that are all garden confined and they are all happy and most importantly alive.  ;D

I also got death threats and thats why I decided to cat proof my garden, some freedom is better than none.  :shy:

Have you contacted your local rescues? Thats a safe way of rehoming to suitable people  ;D

Why would they come after him if you catproofed your garden? He wouldnt be hurting the rabbits anymore! They sound like horrible people.

probably better to suggest he needs an experienced owner, rather than be an only pet. We keep our animals in artificial conditions. Just because they share a house, doesn't mean they like each other. Some cats who get on really badly with their housemates settle into a new home with other animals and are just fine. Don't fret too much about that side of things. If you get him into a rescue they will be able to evaluate him anyway and make recommendations about the sort of home he needs.

In answer to your recent questions, yes we have even considered moving but we just cannot afford it; we came here with 2 beautiful 3 year olds and in less than 2 years, we have buried one little darling and stand to lose the other....

Im thinking that maybe Charlie would benefit from being an only pet because believe it or not he's not a very confident boy with other cats,(and because he beats up his sister Annie)....I dont know if this would have a lasting effect in a new home....but I am no expert in these matters, is it possible he could live amicably with others do you think?

Thank you to everyone that has taken the time to reply to my post; I am so glad I found this site when I did. It is very comforting to know there are wonderful caring people like yourselves out there. . . I am sick of being told to get a grip; its only a cat!

Charlie sounds adorable. (As does his sister.) I'm so sorry that you're having to make this decision.

I tend to agree with Yvonne, Charlie needing to be an only pet will probably make it more difficult to find him a new home away from your crazy neighbours. (Sorry, but they do sound a little mad!)

Oh, and Charlie most definately isn't trespassing, by the way. The law is very specific that cats are free roaming animals.  :)

:morning:  Maple and    :welcome:   to Purrs

I am so sorry that you have found us under such sad circumstances, you have my deepest sympathy.
Why do you think that Charlie will need to be an only pet? that is likely to be a large stumbling block.

So the world according to your neighbour is that they can do what the like, be where they like, go where they like regardless of whose property is involved, but anyone who encroaches on their property or posessions is in the wrong.... You wonder how these people's minds work. You must feel terrorised in your own home you poor things. Is there any way you can move? I think I would be getting the heck out of there myself. Or perhaps complain to Council (are they renting? you could perhaps complain to their landlord about them keepingpets ...?)

What a horrible situation to be in - you have my deepest sympathy, which is no use to you at all I suspect, DOncaster being a long way from Kent. But

Charlie is confined to the house, while we are here he has the run of the house but then little Annie hides under the bed in the spare room to stay out of his way. When we go to work, we close the kitchen door and confine him to two rooms and a covered ginole at the side of the house. He will be 5 in March.

Thank you for your post Dawn; we have considered all options including building a large 'closed in' open air run for Charlie but he would only be an easy target. We have already caught the teenage son of this guy scaling 6 foot fences & tresspassing in our garden and as my partner and myself are both out to work for periods of time during the day, it would be easy for someone to gain access to such a run. Believe me Dawn, we have not taken this descision lightly, it has caused sleepless nights and tears since the threats were made.....neither of us want to part with Charlie, he is a big part of our lives but I really dont see what else we can do. Of course we welcome your suggestions.

Is there any way you could cat proof your garden?   That way Charlie would still be able to go out, he'd be safe and you wouldn't have to part with him.

Home urgently needed for Charlie

Charlie is my beautiful Cream coloured almost 5 year old 'baby boy' who I have had from a 6 week old kitten. Its breaking my heart but I have to find another home for him as quickly as I can.The reason? My darling boy has recently discovered a whole posse of free running baby rabbits that a neighbour has in his garden, and Charlie believes they have been put there for his enjoyment. He has fetched a live one home for me and I was able to rescue and return it. But according to the owner of the rabbits which he breeds and sells, Charlie has been a 'regular' in his garden and he is threatening to kill Charlie the next time he sees him. I have no doubt that this guy will carry out his threat (someone tried to poison Charlie just before Xmas but thanks to the dedicated team at the PDSA hospital in Sheffield he pulled through). I have tried to reason with the family and offered to buy water pistols to chase Charlie off but to no avail.I suggested he protected his rabbits by penning them but he refused.I had to involve the Police when the family started to intimidate me and my partner but they could not help when it came to Charlie. They said that the guy had every right to let his rabbits roam free on his property and as it was Charlie that was tresspassing. They sympathised with me and assured me that if anything happened to Charlie they would know where to look first; obviously not cat people at all! Throughout this ordeal which has been going on a week now, Charlie has been kept in but he's a 'free spirit' and hasnt taken well to his confinement. Neither has his one year old 'sister' Annie who we aqquired after Chalie's natural sister Chloe was killed by some complete maniac with an air rifle a year ago on 29th January.Annie is an indoor cat through choice...Charlie has taken to bullying her so badly that its impossible to leave them together. Annie has been through so much in her short life (she was starved & neglected as a kitten before she came to us ) and she has come on so well but so slowly that I dont want to put her through the ordeal of learning to trust a new owner. Despite everything, Charlie is the most handsome, loving, loyal & amusing cat I have ever had the privelige to live with. I have lost count of the number of times I have wished I could speak 'Charlie-ese' so that I could tell him what is going on, but then even if he understood it would not guarantee his safety in his own back garden. So here I am having made one of the hardest descisions in my life to let my beautiful boy go. I have to, its his only chance.Idealy, he needs to be with a family with no children or pets, away from busy roads (he's petrified of the traffic) where he can have his own space and a warm bed in front of the fire and a welcoming lap at the end of the day.He is neutered and microchipped, up together with all his vaccinations.I am unable to post pictures of him at the moment, I will need my partners help so as soon as I can I will do so. Please, if you or someone you know can help find my baby boy a loving home, please contact me here on this site. Thank you for reading this.
