Aww, that is nice to hear Dee.

Your welcome - as Molly is sat on my knee, she has had a hug, and Zia (long term foster) had a stroke, cos she sits by my feet.

MY LAST WILL AND TESTAMENT

I too, would make a Will if I could write
To some poor, wistful, lonely stray
I leave my happy home
My dish, my cosy bed, my cushioned chair, my toy.
The well loved lap, the gentle stroking hand, the loving voice
The place I made on someone's heart.
the love that at the last
Could help me to a peaceful, painless end, held in loving arms.
If I should die
Oh, do not say
"No more a cat I'll have to grieve me by it's loss"
Seek out a lonely, unloved cat and give my place to him.
This is my legacy.
The love I leave behind.
T'is all I have to give.

Aww, that is so sweet  :)

Once I've got over the loss of Mathers, I'll definately be giving a home to more rescue cats as I know that my grief won't help any cats needing a home and in the end, that's what's most important. It'll be after christmas and I'll post on the forum as soon as I bring them home and introduce them to my other rescue cat, Ronnie.
Thanks again Desley and give your oldies a cuddle from me.

Your very welcome Dee - I take on older cats, so it isn't the first time I have been through this, nor will it be the last (especially with a 15 and 17 year old in the house!!), but I have found the forum to be a great place of comfort, especially with living on my own, and I am always happy to try and help others. It is a shame you never knew him healthy, but he was obviously sent to you as someone who could show him love and attention at the time he most needed it, and he wouldn't want you to be unhappy. Here is a poem I think you might find some comfort.

Thanks Desley, I appreciate your concern especially as I know you've been through the same heartache yourself so recently. I miss Mathers so much and wish I could have known him when he was in good health but on the positive side, at least he had a comfortable home and lots of love for the last year of his life (and lots of yummy food, boy did he love his food!). I know he's in a better place now but my sofa has a cat sized space that he once filled  :'(

RIP Mathers, safe and sound at the Bridge until your Mum is ready to collect you xx

The Greatest Gift

I always knew this time would come,
From the very instant our eyes first met.
How I loved you then! How I love you now!
I made a promise then, and I will keep that promise now...
You will not suffer from a pain that will not heal;
You will not know the loss of a life remembered, now gone.

It is for me alone to make this decision,
The price for the bright joy and pure laughter
You brought me during the time we shared.
I am the only one who can decide when it is time.
When my hope dies, and my fear rides high,
Just when I need you most, I must let you go.

It is for you alone to tell me when you are ready
For without your guidance, I will not know
When to lay my grief, my guilt, my anger
My sorrow and my selfish heart aside
And give you this last gift, this greatest gift.
Your eyes will speak to mine, and I will know.

The pain of this moment is excruciating.
Tears stream down my face in a river of sorrow.
And my heart drowns in a pool of grief.
For you have spoken and I have listened,
And unlike other decisions I have made
This one brings no relief...no comfort...no peace.

For if there´s one thing you´ve taught me,
If there´s only one thing I´ve learned...
Unconditional love has a condition after all,
I must be willing to let you go, when you speak to me
I must be willing to help you go, if you cannot go alone.
And I must accept my pain so you can be free of yours.

Go easily now, go quickly now,
Do not linger here, it is time for you to leave.
Go find your strength, go find your youth.
Go find the ones who've gone before you.
You are free to leave me now, free to let your spirit soar
Rest easy now, your pain will soon be gone.

I pray I will find comfort in my memories...
In the dark and lonely days ahead.
I cannot say I will not miss you, I cannot say I will not cry.
For only my tears can heal my broken heart.
But, I promise you this; as long as I live,
You will live, alive in my mind, forever in my heart.

So I give you this last gift, all I have left to give,
And this will be my greatest gift...sending you away.
It is the measure of my unconditional love...
For only the greatest love can say,
"Good-bye, go find the bridge, we'll meet again,
Loving you has been the greatest gift of all."

Forever and Always... Until Rainbow bridge....

Thanks so much for all your replies, it really helps to know that there are others who understand how I feel. Also, to Yvonne for the lovely poem.  :thanks:

It feels strange not having Mathers around the house today and I know tonight I'll miss him lying on the couch next to me so I could cuddle up to him.  :'(

I still have Ronnie, my other rescue cat to keep me company but he spends a lot of time outside in the garden and isn't in need of as much affection as Mathers was.

Thanks again,
Dee

Good morning Dee really sorry to hear about Mathers

If it should be I grow frail and weak,
And pain prevents my peaceful sleep,
Then you must do what must be done,
When this last battle can't be won.

You will be sad, I understand.
Selfishness might stay your hand.
But on this day, more than the rest,
Your love and friendship take the test.

You'd not want me to suffer.
So, When the time comes, please let me go.

Take me where my needs they'll tend.
Only stay with me until the end.
Hold me firm and speak to me.
Until my eyes no longer see.

I know, in time, you, too, will see,
It is a kindness that you do for me.
Although my tail it's last has waved,
From pain and suffering I've been saved.

I am so very sorry to hear this, it sounds like you gave him a good life though, and worked through his issues till it was obvious it was no longer fair on him, and then did the best thing for him. Sadly, that decision never does get easier. RIP little one.

I had to make the horrible decision to have my cat Mathers put to sleep yesterday.  :'( :'( :'(

He was a rescue cat with existing health problems and was supposedly five years old when we adopted him last year but the vet and myself reckon he was much older. He's been ill for some time with various problems, mainly arthritis and chronic gingivitis. We've tried him on metacam and steroids for the pain and immflamation both these conditions cause but he didn't improve and his quality of life was becoming more restrictive. He loved his food and always looked forward to mealtimes but has been eating less and less because of his painful mouth.

Last week, during one of my many trips to the vet with him, a large lump was found in his mouth. He went in for a biopsy yesterday but the vet said he was in a lot of pain and it was impossible to remove the lump whether it turned out to be cancerous or not. Basically she said there was nothing more they could do to treat him and no more options to prevent him from being in pain. So with a heavy heart, I said goodbye to him and let him go.  :'(

I'm heartbroken but I know he's now at peace. It's the third time I've had to make this decision and it never gets easier.  :(

RIP Mathers, my friend, I'll miss you...
