I wouldn't feed mainly fishy food, especially in males (although Zia prefers fishy food, so I try and make her eat other wet food - she did come on purely dry a month ago though) due to the risks, as you might not know they are predisposed to it until it happens, and it is very serious in males.
Den - I would recommend a small bag of the Duck, I find it the least favourite of all the flavours here.

In answer to what people have said lower down about fishy food aggravating bladder problems - Bertie has struvite crystals so I've done a fair bit of research on this. It all seems to agree that fishy food won't CAUSE problems as some cats are predisposed to bladder problems and some aren't, but it will aggravate existing problems - as will any food with a high magnesium content, as magnesium is a component of the crystals.  He's much better these days (touch wood) but none of my three has fishy food now, just in case.

I keep meaning to buy a rabbit for my lot to try, its had a better life than a chicken  :shy:

This place is good for rabbit meat: http://woldsway.co.uk/acatalog/Pet_Meat.html They used to only do farmed, but now do wild rabbit meat for pets, which includes bones, innards etc all minced in  - yummy! or chunks.

Talking about fishy food but Sophia has smelly fish breath is it anything to worry about or is just because of what she is eating? ;)

Thank you so much Den for starting this thread, its a question thats been bugging me for some time now,I finally have the answers I was searching for :)

What gets me is applaws meanus are mainly fish,5 out of 7 flavours are mainly fish,I want to try mine on applaws (although it is a bit out of my price range) so will get them some chicken in pumpkin and cheese :)

Must admit my lot like rabbit too but after seeing Dens handsome boy I am a tad more reluctant to feed them it.

Personally I think like humans,if your cat likes fish, then as a treat its good for them, everything in moderation :)
Love me,love my animals.

Oh yes you aren't allowed to give them live ones. They are dead but with fur etc still on. I buy them either frozen from a reptile shop and then defrost them and heat them ever so slightly so they are 'live' temp or I buy them from a butchers and again heat them slightly so they are live temp.

My lot love a rabbit from time to time but put it in the bath as the mess is easier to clean up then!

Thank you for that info Milly's mum. I thought they only did 2 flavours since PAH only had those 2, but had all the adult flavours. Silly PAH!! He's never had duck before so I'd have to get a small bag to see if he likes it.

As for Iams, I have to say I'm very anti-Iams and will never feed my animals on it.

As far as I'm aware, its only a problem if a cat already has bladder problems

True it does aggrevate an existing problem but it can also cause the stones in the first place as the excess minerals have to come from somewhere.
If a male cat gets blocked it becomes very serious very quickly as they have such a narrow urethra  :(

Den, JWB kitten comes in 4 flavours, available from vetuk with free P+P  ;D There are rescues here who have links so they earn 5%  ;D ;D
Lamb, Duck, Turkey and Fish.

As there are newbies here google Iams cruelty and you'll see some interesting things

My current bot is fairly unfussy, but my first cat was addicted to fish and fishy flavours....he would eat lamb and chicken if there was nothing else going, but very reluctantly. The only other flavour we could get him to eat was beef - IAMS do some very good turkey, beef, lamd etc, and even my previous fussy boy preferred iams chicken to any other type of chicken. They also do tuna and salmon flavours, but the % isn't too high so should be fine for him. Hills science plan are also good. I've found that fussy cats will often happily eat any / all flavours of these makes of food, even when unbearably fussy with other brands. More expensive, I know, but better than them turning their noses up at it, and it's good quality, vet-recommened nutrition.

Thanks for all the replies!
He's a foody so will eat everything. I've noticed lamb isn't his favourite and chicken is his 2nd least favouite, as he takes a long time to eat them compared to other flavours. Fish is his preferred food of choice!! I am planning on feeding him a large variety of foods and flavours, I really don't want him to turn out fussy. He definately loves his JWB dry food which is why I'm wondering if JWB fish everyday is any good for him.
As far as I'm aware he has no bladder problems - but he's still a baby so ....

Only thing I wont ever feed him is rabbit .. no one whether human, feline or canine is permitted to eat rabbit in this household!!

As far as I'm aware, its only a problem if a cat already has bladder problems, like cystitis etc. The reason is that fish is high in magnesium which is one of the constituents of struvite crystals, which can aggravate bladder probs. But I think its always wise to vary the diet - if at all possible!

I may be completely wrong but the Felix pouches only contain about 4% meat/fish anyway, so I don't think there is a danger for Memphis to get health problems from the amount in that.  I think the concern some people have relates more to real fish or cat food that has a very high content of fish, such as Highlife, which can have 60% or more in it.
I feed mine JWB dry (any variety and sometimes 2 or 3 mixed together), as well as good quality (i.e. high in meat/fish content) foods such as NaturesMenu, Highlife (both pouches and cans) and for variety also Felix and Whiskas.

I think if you give them a good mix then you should be OK.

Des will be able to help, i'm sure.
Best wishes, Chris, Samson, Buddie and Pepper

Fishy food - Question
« Reply #1 on: November 09, 2007, 11:48:11 AM »
Sorry for the ignorance here, but I really am new to cats and am learning new things every day.

Whilst researching about cats before I brought Memphis home, I kept reading that too much fish for male cats is a bad thing. I have a male cat so now I'm worried as to what I can feed him and whether fishy food is ok.
I'm feading him JWB dry and Felix pouches, he adores both. The JWB he has at the moment is Turkey and Rice. I have also bought him a small bag of the ocean fish JWB. I mixed in a little of the fish with the Turkey just to see if he likes it, and he LOVES it. He also goes mad for the Plaice and Cod Felix.

Clearly I have a cat who  :Luv: fish over anything else.
Now, I was going to buy the JWB fish when he's finished this big bag of Turkey and Rice to give him some variety (as they only do 2 Kitten flavours), but realised this would mean he would be eating fish every day.

Can someone help me out as to whether it is ok for him to eat fish everyweek and to have the JWB fish. I really do not understand how fish would be bad (except for ones with a high mercury content) and I don't want to be feeding him something he shouldn't really be eating.
Like I said, I really am new  :shy:
