My 4 months old Oliver is a highly affectionate, sweet boy, practically a "purring velcro". He constantly rubs himself against us, and plops down right by us, cuddles with us... nonetheless, he doesn't care for being picked up and held. Most of the time he jumps right down, at the very most he would "tolerate" for some moments but it is obvious that he is not enjoying it at all.
I found it rather strange, as all the friendly cats I have ever known loved being held in the arms.
I asked the former owner about it and she told me he was always like that, as were all of his siblings. She also suggested that they didn't get the chance to be held much after all (in that household there were 6 other cats besides the little brothers) and maybe they just never got used to it.
So I have been trying for about a week, not being too pushy so as not to overly annoy him, to get him used to it, without much improvement.
I have also read somewhere that there are cats, even if they are friendly and affectionate, just don't like being picked up by nature, and prefer staying by/near you.
If Ollie falls into this category, it is not too much of a problem for me as he is so loving in every other way, and I don't want to persist and bug him in vain. But if it is, as his former owner said, just a matter of getting used to and he will learn to enjoy it, that would be great.
Does anyone have been in a similar situation? Should I leave him in peace, or try to "train" him, is there an indication to look out for in order to determine one way or another? Any advice and experience sharing will be so appreciated!!
