A spray of Acclaim or Indorex will prevent flies and maggots in bins.

Good tip, I'm awaiting delivery of my wheelie bin (bags and 2 weekly collections smell sooooo bad), so will do this as soon as I get it  ;D

I'm with T on this one.  We have a separate black bucket which we bought.  We double bag it and take to the local skip every couple of days.  Trying to keep smell down as much as possible in this warm weather

We have gone to the fortnightly collection its a nightmare with the rubbish never mind the litter

this week the bin was emptyed and when i pulled it back in i noticed it was heavy , i looked inside and there was a brocken bag and te bottom was full of wet used litter and there were maggots and flys , i was nearly sick

i had to bribe hubby to scrape it out re-bag it and bleach the bin out

he was giping and me and the girls stayed inside laughing  :evillaugh:

he has come home with a litter locker today , i bag the poos and put in there and still empty the litter out every day into a bin bag but least theres no poos in there , ill empty the litter locker the day the bin gets emptyed
i,m not going through that again

oh and at the cattery i worked at they used wood based and trew itinto the bulls and put it back on the land , it biodigraded within days

New litter problems, taking old litter to tip, think it would be easier to potty train them all.

Seriously though, we have had wheelie bins and fortnightly collections for about 9 years,so we double bag the used litter currently about 75 litres daily and make 3 trips a week to tip; also have to be careful the inspectors arent there because they say you are a business and need to pay for the pleasure.

The lumpy bits shouldnt be used cos cats are meat eaters, like most of us. You dont put meat in compost bins.

Yep, but only in moderation, like they say. It is like grass clippings. too much makes sludge, not compost. I use the lumpy its and all as my cats are wormed and vaccinated. They recommend against the lumpy bits not because they are no good, but because of the potential for disease. With worming and vaccination I figure I am on top of that. Mind you toxoplasmosis might be a problem ....

I've just been on the smart cat litter website (checking for the other thread) and it says you can use it in compost (not the lumps). though the link to the env. thing says woodshavings can only be used in moderation. The pee acts as an accelerant.

so there you go, compost heaps all round!

back when I had a big garden, I used organic litter as a mulch, It had the added advantage that it deterred stray cats from the garden despite mine being indoors. Now, I use the council garbage collection service and also those hygroscopic crystals rather than organic litter. So apart from having to have two bags to cope with the weight issue, it all goes to landfilll

Its interesting that each Council seems to have its only policy on things like that....£5 a bag seems awfully expensive!  I think we pay a couple of quid for a roll of clear bags, and if they're left out on the day of the normal rubbish collectiion they are taken by a separate van which comes earlier than the usual one.

As you are a rescue will the council let you have one of the big bins. Virginia on the farm has one and I think we pay about £3 a week for it.

We also have a garden collection

I think it depends wher you live, here they will only collect garden stuff once or twice a year. Most of it has to go in the green bin. Otherwise you have to pay about £5 for a bag to be collected.

We bag ours and take to the garden recycling skip and empty it in

We did get a couple of odd looks but the recycling lot are very happy for us doing it - we don't flush as we have a septic tank and it causes pipes to explode if you do flush - week 1 in the house taught us that!

We also have a garden collection as well as the 2 weekly rubbish/recycle one.  That might be possible as its wood based?

Much of the wood based litter can be flushed as long as you flus while you are emptying the tray.

We have green bin one week and black bin the other. We are allowed to place the wood litter (minus the lumps) in the green bin.

I think I've asked before but can't remember.

I use the wood pellets and my wheelie bin is mainly full of used litter.
I think someone mentioned its no good for compost heaps.

a friend of mine scattered used litter on her paths in her wooded garden area (minus the lumpy bits).

anyone used it as a garden mulch?
would a different type of litter be more disposable friendly?

any environmentalists/recyclers/gardeners out there know?
would be useful in case the dreaded fortnightly bin emptying get implemented locally!
