Smelly Hooded Toilet???

Hi suzi the filters on the hooded trays do have a smell to them maybe it's that you could try gettin a new filter good luck x

I've not changed thier food...its not a poo or wee smell....rather odd! I can't smell the litter on its own so i don't think it's that either! Ive also tried it with the door off and they still manage to get the litter all over the floor..

...Perhaps it is just because the litter tray is new..and it's maybe just the newness smell mixed with the other lovely aromas that the cats produce in there ( and believe me they are lovely!!!!!11 ) 

Tomorrow I will try cleaning it out and using a wee bit bleach in the mix...and if its a nice day i will air it outside for a bit...then hopefully! I don't want to give up on it just yet coz it is so much better than having to sweep my floor 10 times a day.!!!!!

i dont have a hooded one
i have a real prob with the litter tray
i empty it every morn compleatly wash it out refill and then lift any poo out asap

but i still hate the smell that comes off it and its WEE , i have a very sensitive nose

i have tried about every litter there is , i only like sophisticats but it turns lunas paws pink
i have a prob with the crystals that you can leave for a month but i cant bear to see then yellow and they have a strange smell too so hey only last max 3 days and thats hard for me

I have a hooded tray and for the first week it was rank. Now I have changed to crystals there is no problem.

I have a hooded tray with a door and it doesn't smell.  Maybe its the new, plastic smell of a new tray?  Perhaps a clean and bleach will do the trick.  Does the litter you use have a  scent?  Maybe that is what is causing the smell now that it's in a confined space?

We get on OK although I remove the flap from the front so perhaps that might help and let some of it out a bit !

However....im really confused coz the new hooded litter tray is really smelly!

I only use covered litter trays,  usually use the wood based litter and don't  have a problem, I would know as my husband has a very sensitive snout.

Thats one reason I don't like hooded trays - because smells build up in them (despite so called wonderful charcoal filters!) and they linger, and that means not just urine/poo smells but the litter itself, not nice for us, but think how horrible it is for the puss cats LOL!    Maybe try deeper trays instead to contain the litter a bit more?

Maybe just mix a little bleech with lots of water & give it the once over. Its great for getting rid of smells. I have 3 snakes (Big softies) & clean there Vivarium out with a very watered down bleech solution & it does the trick.

Dont use more than a tiny bit & use plenty of water & this wont be toxic to the kitties.

We recently bought a hooded litter tray as our two cats are very messy with their litter!!!!!!!

However....im really confused coz the new hooded litter tray is really smelly! It's a really odd smell that it gives off that I can't really describe...nothing like their business!!!  I lift any little deposits out of it frequently, and the whole lot is changed every so often too... so its not that its an unclean tray!!! We have also kept using the old tray so they have two..so it's not being overused either.

We have always used Thomsons litter ..and im wondering if it's maybe to do with that? I'm thinking of switching to a wood based litter to see if that helps solve the problem!

Anyone else had this problem with hooded trays??? I wish i could solve the problem because its great at keeping the litter in the tray as opposed to all over the floor!!!! But im getting really self conscious that my house is begining to have this odd smell!!!

Any ideas?

(I should also say that it has a air filter thingy on it too)
