he gets zoom groomed to stop him licking it; it acts as a nice distraction! His last ointment dose is tonight and it's not completely healed so here's hoping he doesn't pick at it from tomorrow.
he's pulled out the fur by his tail/bum too so it's a nervous habit but at least there he just looks a bit bald, no sore bits.

Poor Swampy - it's quite a common thing in people too. I would imagine that zoom grooming might help alleviate the compulsion?

Ha, that link won't open on my browser but thanks for the idea. I'll search the Hills site; the US one generally has the best product info.
He's still got his pink leg but hope it clears by saturday night as that's when the treatment stops.

yup, Milly's Mum, that's what I did. He was too busy noshing to notice his leg for at least 5 mins. :)  This stuff is apparently too strong to be licenced for peeps. The bigger prob is why he insists on tugging his fur out in the first place. He got zoom-groomed yesterday though with his wonder zoomgroom brush that he loves so hope that will help him not to want to. Must be a nervous habit as he did his bum area too but that didn't get sore.

Put the cream on and then feed him, gives it a chance to soak in.  ;D

Helen used binders for Tiggy so you could PM her.

Self-inflicted picking out of his fur with his teeth - prob a nervous habit. Have strong steroid ointment, which I'm supposed to wear gloves to put on him and then only a little bit and then stop him licking himself for 5 minutes. That could be interesting!
Poor Swamp - another vet visit. We had another urinalysis done and his concentration is still only 10.15 so not too good. Right now he's noshing i/d and a RC Renal chicken pouch every day. Someone said to try Z/d canned allergy food as that may help with skin itching too. Anyone tried it and know what it's like, high or low in phosphorus?
Vet said he may give me binders to put in Swamp's food but that he may vomit them. He previously said they don't work too well. Wrong thread to ask but anyhow, does anyone know if they work well or not really? He seems happy on i/d and RC but can't give him exclusively RC Renal as his tum will run.

tomorrow it is then. Poor Swamp. And his poor Mum's bank balance. I just hope the vet doesn't entertain any daft notions about him wearing a collar

raw, crusted pink area on Swampy's leg
« Reply #1 on: June 24, 2007, 22:21:52 PM »
Sorry, another day another health problem. Swampy's developed a nasty looking pinky/red raw and crusted patch on his inside leg. I think he must have pulled the hair out and kept at the area. Of course he'd lick anything that I put on it, but not sure what to do. He went to the vets just the other day and I'm not sure if I should take him back, or take a photo of what it looks like and show it to the vet (if possible). Basically how do they treat this sort of thing, given that creams will just be licked off? I've noticed him before pulling hair out of his tail area and he's a 10 bath a day lad, but I'm not sure what to do about this one. It may heal quite easily but I wouldn't like it to get infected of course. I didn't notice it before this evening so think it's pretty recent as he gets mega cuddles every day. Irony is, he's had a good day nosh and play wise.
His herpes isn't great so I'm nervous about giving him an immuno suppressant like cortisone, which would though stop a nervous habit.
are any healing creams ok to use - what do you think? thanks everyone.
