He probably needs to be with another active cat.  I hope he finds a good home.  Has your friend contacted the breeder who sold them the cat?  All reputable breeders will either take back a cat if the owners can no longer keep it, or help in finding a new home if that's not possible.  In fact, many stipulate in the contract of sale that the owners must contact them if no longer able to care for the cat.  I assume there's an ocicat rescue?  Or a breed rescue that includes ocicats.  It's important that he's rehomed to someone who understands the ocicat temperament to minimise the chances of him needing to be rehomed again due to someone taking him on without fully understanding his needs.

I wondered if he got along with other cats.

Hopefully they'll find an owner that will be home more for the cat.

If you do take in a more active breed of cat though you probably will need a friend for it, if not at the beginning then eventually.

Our Burmese we had for 2 years before we got her a friend, and it has really helped calm her down a bit. She's not chewed on any furniture in a while ;)

To be honest I'd love two cats - but we've never had one before and wanted to start small so to speak.

Plus the current owner says that part of the reason they are looking for a new home for him is that he isnt getting on with his housemate (who ran away for a while as a result of his bullying - but has now returned) so I'd be worried that would happen again.

Thankfully there is a lot of interest so he will find a more suitable home im sure.

Sorry to hear you won't be giving the cat a new home.

I guess having 2 cats is out of the question?

Ocicats do better with a friend. As they are very people/cat um, cats.

http://www.ukocicats.org.uk/index.html  (check out her nursery page and about her queen - really great site)

and http://www.ocicatclubuk.org/theocicat.htm

can probably help you out more, I've researched these cats as I would LOVE to own one or two. You may be best taking him in and getting him a friend (wouldn't have to be an Ocicat you could have a different breed or a moggie).

Also Sue at http://freespace.virgin.net/sue.foulds/aalspotz/index.html is very helpful.

http://www.opaldaizcats.co.uk/page5.html - this breeder confirms that they shouldn't be left alone or should have a friend.

Ocicats are gorgeous and sound like they are a very similar temperment to most "foreigns"  they are intelligent, playful and friendly.

They originated from crossing Abyssinian / siamese and American shorthair.  I am the current slave to Tow Abyssinian's and they are fine being left at home all day.

Hopefully these articles will help you in your decision.

In ancient times cats were worshiped as gods; they have not forgotten this.

Hi and  :welcome:  I don't know a whole lot about ocicats but I believe they have a similar temperament to bengals - ie very active.  Would you consider getting a companion for him?  Either another pedigree with similar temperament or a rescue cat that has quite a lively temperament?  I think if he had some company it would be fine you being out all day but I'm not sure about leaving him alone, esp as he's still young.

  :welcome:  :welcome:

I have no idea about Ocicats and their temperaments/emotional needs but most cats tend to sleep most of the day  8)
Have you asked your friend what he is like and whether she thinks he would be happy with you?

If you get him you must post loads of pics for us to drool over  :drool; :drool;

Hi Folks

We're new here and hope you don't mind helping us out - a friend of ours is very sadly having to find a new home for their two year old male ocicat. He's beautiful and we are very taken with him but have heard that they cant really be left alone all that much. We're both out to work with 9to5 jobs monday to friday and are wondering whether that constitutes him being left alone too much - we're around in the evenings and weekends though.

Any advice greatly appreciated.

Ta

C & J
