you get the "sheep netting" type of wire, its thinner and has the much larger holes than the chicken wire, anyone thinking of doing diy jobs and using such materials make sure you dont get the two muddled as sheep wire netting is not suitable for use with cats..they will escape.

When we moved here there was some in the garden and it was horrible stuff, also the wire was so thin it had broken in places. The spaces between the wires was larger than I would like for cats as they could get paws through it and it was far too plyable for my liking. Certainly it was not suitable for cat pens. Perhaps the type you have is a different quality.

My neighbours have chicken wire and its been there for donkey years and doesnt appear to be any worse for wear, I'm sure michael bought the galvanised type.

I saw a web page on salmon netting but it seemed a bit pricey just to be hanging about in the garden so I went for the option of using garden wind break netting. I thought it was bound to be quite weather resistant and hard wearing as it was meant for outdoor use. It's been fine - all I do is check it occasionally to make sure it's still held securely on the supports.

Oh, and it comes in green or black so it blends in pretty well. If memory serves me correctly, I think it cost less than £100 to do my garden which is about 60ft x 30ft. I got it from a reasonably big garden centre near where I live but you could always have a look on line.

I think that with cat-proofing, if the netting is rigid - like coated wire, they will be able to climb over it. If the netting is flexible and can be draped at an angle, they won't climb over it as it has too much "give" and they don't feel secure enough to climb.

According to the CP anyway; it worked in my case

Ruth, for making a garden cat proof you use netting, i can imagine my youngsters climbing up and over chicken wire even if its at an angle

we have just built one off of a new renderd building we have at the bottom of the garden
i will post a pic of it when finished
i have got mi hubby now building shelves to sit on and things to play and climb on

mango will love it when its finished

i would have gone wi cat proofing but our garden is too big and i dont think our neighbours would appreciate it looking like a prison garden

If you get the Trilweld (they sell it at placed like B @ Q it is not expensive but will last forever and will not need replacing. It is also mush more sturdy than Chicken wire and has smaller spaces.

Yup it does but if you get galvanised wire it should be ok. Chicken wire's the cheapest (cheepest

sorry!!!!) but it bends too. I found mine got holes so went for bigger gauge wire the next time. The chicken wire run lasted about 3 years (not as much rain as here in SAfrica though :S ).

I did a DIY job on cat proofing to keep my lovelies safe and sound and it wasn't that expensive really; and most importantly, they've never got out.

If your garden is fenced [mine is 6ft fencing] then all I did was angle wooden supports out over my garden [attached to the fence posts] and then run garden wind-break netting from support to support, securing at each one. It was pretty straightforward to do - and if I can do it, anyone can! That way, your cats could still have the run of the garden. I had hedging running down both sides of the garden but I just did the fencing slightly over on my side to avoid it.

A cat did get in once but he was escorted from the premises at a high rate of notts by Dave, my tabby.

Some people can be so horrible - I recently wanted some info about birds so I went on to a bird web site and some of the postings were really, really vicious about cats. Very nasty.

I'm not surprised you're angry - I'd be hopping mad. Good luck with it and let everyone know how you get on won't you?

i wonder if we could get a rough price together for a certain sized garden and have it for future reference as its something that is asked quite often.

my garden as in the actual lawn is around 40 odd metres long by i think not an awful lot of metres narrower so apart from the fact its not possible since i have one side in trees it would cost me a small fortune to do..its is a nice thought though.

Buying the bits and diy ing it may be better but Roz offers no obligation quotes so would give you an idea. I looked at the purrfect fence system and it would have cost a small fortune to do my average garden

seriously i think you did get your measurments muddled.

Heres the wee run that michael just made, the little cat shed cost around £125 and i'd say the materials for the run part only cost about 50 quid..maybe a little more, of course it only has 2 sides but wouldnt be much more for the other 2 sides, we had enough chicken wire left from the roll if we wanted to do that.

not sure about the UK, as everything here is sooo expensive, but abroad I found using an ordinary local fencing company was cheaper than custom made cat runs??

You've got my sympathy CC - used to be like that where we lived previously. Was damned glad we could move. It makes you laugh doesn't it, when the kids can wreak havoc left, right and centre, whereas cats generally just mind their own business? (okay - not always, but usually! Was just thinking about my neighbour's cat, who was definitely minding someone else's business - their rockery to be precise, which had a little mousie hiding in it)

Although they did come into my front garden to chase my cats! So I went out to tell them to sod off, got a load of lip and called a fat

I'm 6 months pregnant btw so just shows how stupid they are not being able to tell the difference!
