Thanks I have learnt a lot all ready. I have looked in the sites you said about I saw one called monty but he is in Stafford which is a bit to far even though I can travel a bit

Good luck Jason, don't be a stranger, you can pick up some really good tps, both before and after you get your new friend. I know you have previously had cats, but I have learned so much from here and I have had cats for nearly 40 years.

Jason, there is a GCCF registered breeder in Somerset with a Maine Coon boy for sale.

I wouldn't take the info at face value, and would want to check him out in his home environment, if he's still available. Also worth checking our the GCCF accreditation. There also two kittens from a GCCF breeder in Fareham on there, which might be worth investigation.

Jason, it may be worthwhile contacting one or two breeders outside your area, if there are no cats available for adoption closer to home. They may be able to recommend a reputable breeder within travelling distance for you.

If you have a patio garden, it might be quite a simple undertaking to fit cat proofing to your boundary walls/fences, which would offer them a safe place for outside access, whilst still satisfying a breeder's requirements for indoor homing.

If you visit the Maine Coon Cat Club, they have a PDF of contacts for Maine Coon breeders throughout the UK. As you don't mind waiting, it might also be a smart move to contact Battersea Dog and Cat Shelter - they can put your name on their books, and if they get a suitable Maine Coon rescue in, they will contact you. They have three homing sites, so you never know, it may not take long.

Paula I know that a lot of breeders the good ones are now issuing contracts stating indoor only and most specialist pedigree rescues want that as well unless the cat coming in to care has had outdoor access in their previous home

Mine have outdoor access well the ones that chose to go out due to my rural location but some of mine are indoor only at my choice

I would recommend finding a breeder who is near to you and ask to visit - remember this will be their home - a good breeder anyway and most will show you round where their cats are - not all live in their homes the spraying stud boys will live outside in pens and some of the girls will also live in pens as well as when calling they are peeing everywhere - places should be clean and tidy and the cats look well fed, groomed and happy and disease free

This was years ago, my point being that you may have to wait a while and then travel. There are MC breeders all over the place. For once I disagree with Liz, my MC's were both outdoor cats as my little moggy wouldn't use a litter tray and had a cat flap.

I don't usually disagree with Liz, she is very knowledgeable. Sorry Liz.

I just googled Maine Coon Rescue and went to the official site, there was a two year old male at the time down in Bristol, but I wasn't willing to travel that far.

That would be ok I can't think of any reason I would need to rehome a cat I had my last cat for over 10 years before it died of natural causes she was 7 when I got her

My contract with Mullycoonz Cassandra (Cassie) signed her over to me with limitations, Jenny still 'owned' her, if I had to rehome her again for any reason, she would have gone back to Jenny first. She was not responsible for any vet bills etc. though.

I live in a ground floor flat with a patio door and a fenced back garden. I am home most of the time as I have a slight disability so an indoor cat would be ok and I don't mind having an older cat but not to old. I have no dogs

Maine Coon rescue Uk homes cats which owners can't keep not usually any kittens though usually older adults.

Coonies are also indoor only cats not for roaming unless you have a catio or catproofed garden what is your set up for this - most breeders only home to indoor only homes and have a contract which states that as well - I hasten to add that would be reputable breeders not the back yard type who are only in it for the money

I have several rescue pedigrees Bengals, Mau's, a Ragdoll and an NFC the last 2 are both 8kgs of fur, one likes grooming the other hates it in fact the NFC put me in hospital but we have solved that by getting him a buzz cut at the vets just before the summer then he is back in full coat for the winter

Pedigrees are lovely but hard work - our Bengals are all rescues as we were heavily involved in Bengal rescue but having ended up with an F2 with no handling or socialisation means we are having a break unless someone is desperate

We also have oldies including Hyper T and a a 16yo diabetic

Rescues come in all shapes and sizes and if we knew more about the home set up as I said catio, catproofed garden, dogs etc we could point in in the right direction

I am in West Sussex, when I got Eric, silver Tabby MC, through the MC rescue site he came from Reading and his owner who couldn't keep him met me half way.

I also had Cassie, tabby/tortie MC, through them, she was four so too old to be a breeding queen anymore, the breeder had her spayed and everything, that time the breeder brought her to my home to check it was suitable before she would sign over the cat.

Welcome to Purrs.

Not sure where you're located, but f you dont hit lucky with the rescues, there are some very reputable MC breeders in the Lake District.

If you do buy from a breeder, always check out a cat or kitten in its existing home, and that the Breeder is registered with TICA or GCCF. Dont be shy asking about accreditation. Any breeder worth their salt won't mind at all.

Must admit, like Paula, am a sneaky Norwegian Forest Cat fan. They're very like Maine Coons in many respects (yet totally different

)

Please don't buy from Gumtree or similar sites, you are likely to end up with an ill kitten, do you need a kitten? If so go to your local rescues. If not, go to the official Maine Coon Cat Rescue site, the cats are older, usually about four, but at least you know that they are vaccinated, Litter tray trained, etc. They will do a homecheck first.

I have had Maine Coons before. I sneakily prefer Norwegian Forest Cats.
