It has never occured to me to change them every 6 or 12 months, they get changed when they look like they need it - but I have way more trays than I do cats, there are only my cats that religiously have the same trays, and admittedly the Lidl ones could do wtih being replaced, teh pink litter did stain them slightly, but if I give Tiger a normal tray she gets litter everywhere, so she shall have to wait!!

Mine would last longer as theyr'e fine after cleaning but I just like to start over with a fresh one approx once a year. Just feels nice to have new

Jaffa scratches away at the plastic and always seems to use the bottom or side of the tray no matter how much litter I put in it (he sprays against the hood too) so there comes a point where I decide a new one would be nice. I also find the flap sometimes breaks after a bout a year (snaps off). I do buy fairly cheap trays as I know I'm going to replace it after a year or so. I usually buy one at the supreme cat show each year - it's one of my regular purchases and my friend would be terribly disappointed if she didn't have to carry one around each year

Lexy has a bad habit of not scratching the litter over what she has done in the tray, she scratches the tray instead. I have the same tray as Mark does, and in the last 9 months she's used this, you can't tell she has. The plastic is durable, and even with her scratching the sides, the hood etc, all intact, no scratch marks.

T - I've seen your trays. They don't look a day over 1 year old!

Well i can say i for one certainly wont be replacing cat trays every 6 months !!! they will get replaced if need be should they get broken etc.
(hells bells..money doesnt grow on tree's LOL)

I will say though i think the hooded trays are more durable plastic than the more brittle cheapo normal style trays we had in work.

I can truthfully say that many of my trays are also well over 10 years old, all trays washed daily with virkon and not a mark on them. We use woodbased litter.

Not quite, they are covered trays and at the time were about £8 - £10 each wholesale, but they really are as new so were well worth it. You really cannot see a scratch on the bottom. (I have just had another look to convince myself, and yes I had my glasses on.

) I know the type of trays you can but in the supermarkets (I use them for cats that won't use covered trays) don't seem to last too long. Mind you that could be because after I have washed them I put them outside near my husbands Motorbikes and he has a habit of backing up and braking them. Another small one I had recently he used to mix plaster, so that one went in the bin as well.

I remember a post on CC (cant rem who posted it tho) they said put a bowl of water down with a block of stainless steel in it and that neutralises the smell of the urine

One of my trays is a couple of years old and its like new - its the enclose one from PAH (made by marchioro, italy) - Its really sturdy. Some of the really cheap ones from Tesco etc are probably not such good quality. The plastic is very shiny so can't absorb any smells.

Not sure I would want to eat my dinner off one, cleaned or not

I can honestly say this has not happened to the trays I use after 10 years possible more for most of them, just to make sure I have just emptied a tray and had a look.

I buy new trays every 6 mths coz as Suzanne mentioned, the plastic tends to absorb the odours eventually from the bottom of the tray surface being scratched by the cats. I buy biggish trays as the persians seem to need a lot of space LOL! I buy those nice pastel colour trays - you know? the pale pink, blue, lavender and aqua ones - they tone well with the pale blue paint colour in my litter tray cupboard!

I've got 6 trays in the cupboard and two out in the garage, they get filled up with the chick crumb litter, poop is scooped several times a day, clumps of wee as and when, and then emptied and washed once a week. Sometimes the ones in the garage get forgotten, because they're not so visible - out of sight out of mind!

I must have had some of my litter trays for over ten years and they are like new, when emptied and washed you could eat you dinner off them? I do think it depends on the type of litter you use.

Sometimes when people hand in a cat they donate their trays, often they go straight in the bin.

I use a 30L bag of cat litter a week
I spray and wipe out my trays everytime i empty them, which is prob 3 times a day

i buy 16litres of cat litter every other day which cost 2 quid
i buy the tesco value one
i have 7 cats so i feel i have to change the trays every other day
if i had the money id change them everyday

i always take the poo out everytime jasper does one, but stir the wee up. (we found crystals are the way to go) they are not as messy and dont stick to the bottom.

then we change his litter once a week

I replace them about once a year as plastic does absorb odours so eventually it's a good idea to get a new one. That and the fact that Jaffa's pees against the plastic a lot so it eventually gets yukky in his corner despite cleaning.

Maybe you could try giving them a good bleach. The smell shouldn't get into the plastic. I suppose litter trys should last forever really.

...should you replace litter trays? We have had ours now since October, and I am wondering if it is time to purchase some new ones.

Our litter place smells foul at the moment, despite me cleaning with cat wee stain remover twice and cleaning out all the litter trays too. Its driving me insane yet my husband claims not to be able to smell it!!!!!
