I knew he'd built areas all around his home so his cats could play outside at their leisure whilst being kept safe. The areas prevented them getting in harms way, but allowed for a fun outdoors experience. I saw a photograph showing how his cats could safely leave the house via a window going into an outside play area enclosed with a mesh.
I only know because i came across an award for best famous cat lover and sir Patrick Moore was one of the nominees.

Ahh, I KNEW there must be a reason I liked him so much... a cat lover, that explains it.

I was amazed to hear he mapped the moon, not something everyone can claim!!
I knew he had cats but didn't know about the book either

Sadly, Patrick Moore passed away last weekend.
I knew he was a cat lover but I only found out a few days ago that he'd published a book earlier this year called 'Cats Really Are Nicer than People'; here's a youtube clip of him being interviewed about the book and his cats:
